Father Gerald Dino Named Bishop-elect of Van Nuys

The Very Rev. Gerald N. Dino, a Binghamton native, will be installed as bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Diocese of Van Nuys on Thursdayin Phoenix, Ariz., where the 13-state diocese is headquartered.

Dino, who grew up in the Downs Avenue area of the First Ward and graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1958, was appointed to the position late last year by Pope Benedict XVI. Dino’s home parish was Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church on Clinton Street in Binghamton.

Dino will become the only Broome County native to ascend to the office of bishop, Broome County Historian Gerald Smith said after a check of historical society files.

On December 6, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Father Gerald N. Dino, 67, Protosyncellus (Vicar General) of the Passaic Eparchy and pastor of Saint George Parish, Linden, NJ, to succeed Bishop Skurla as Bishop of Van Nuys.

Bishop-elect Dino will be ordained and enthroned at Saint Helen Catholic Church in Phoenix, on Bright Thursday, March 27, 2008.

Bishop-elect Gerald N. Dino was born in Binghamton, New York, on January 11, 1940. He received a bachelor of arts degree, cumlaude, from Duquesne University in 1961, and a completed graduate theological studies from the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Pittsburgh, in 1965. He was ordained a priest for the Eparchy of Passaic on March 21, 1965. He received a licentiate degree in Oriental Ecclesiastical Studies from the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome, in 1972, and completed graduate work in religious communication from Loyola University, New Orleans, 1973.

After ordination, he was assistant pastor of Saint John the Baptist Parish, Pottstown, PA, 1967-1967, and Saint Michael Parish, Perth Amboy, New Jersey,1967-1969, and pastor, Saint Nicholas Parish, Dunellen, NJ, 1969-1970. He did graduate studies in Rome from 1970-1972, and from 1973-1979, was professor and academic dean at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

From1979-1996, he was pastor of Holy Ghost Parish, in Jessup, Pennsylvania, and from1996 until the present, pastor of Saint George Parish, in Linden. In 2000, he was named administrator of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Elizabeth, NJ.

Father Hornick went down to Van Nuys for the consecration/installation, almost as soon as he took off his vestments from celebrating Pascha. LOL!
