Saying “I Believe” and then continuing to live a life as if the sacrifice of Jesus means nothing and that life is a lark because God is sending us graces - neglects part of the gospel.

Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to indwell believers and promised the Holy Spirit would guide us.

So, when people do charitable works no Christian ought to criticize or judge why the Christian is being charitable.

Amen. We need to be careful in trying to determine motives. Sometimes they are clear, but when they are not, we should leave it to God.

So, it is obvious that Jesus expected that we do charitable works.

Absolutely. As Eph 2:10 says, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

Beautiful sermon, Gamecock!

"Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?"

And what is even more amazing is that the atoning death of the Good Shepherd for His sheep was decreed by God from before the earth was formed by the one-time sacrifice of the "Lamb slain from the foundation of the world."

From before time began God decreed His specific, personal, named-and-numbered salvation by Christ on the cross.

"Be not afraid; only believe." -- Mark 5:36

98% of RC teaching isn't in Scripture.

Outright lie.

The article speaks of Justification, being declared not guilty before God. Christianity is not about being perfect, but being declared perfect. Read through Romans Chapter 7 as being descriptive of the Christian life.

AMEN! Mercy triumphs over judgment.

The article speaks of the splendor of grace. If we were saved by our works, our salvation would then be payment for services rendered. But Paul explains we are saved by grace, not works, and that grace is not in and of ourselves. It is a gift from God.

"Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." -- Romans 4:4-5

It's said that unless one has a real grasp of grace as totally unmerited and freely given there can be no understanding of what mercy truly means or what Christ actually accomplished on the cross.

Salvation is of the Lord, all of it by and for and through Jesus Christ.

I almost enjoy watching men struggle to prove salvation is by their own good works. It's the best illustration in the world that if you think you contribute to God's grace, you probably don't have it.

Jesus said those doing the will of his Father would enter into the kingdom of the heavens. Matt. 7:21. It wasn’t lack of wonder that barred the way.

Matthew 25:34-46 "Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 'for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 'I [was] naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.' "Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed [You,] or thirsty and give [You] drink? 'When did we see You a stranger and take [You] in, or naked and clothe [You?] 'Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 4"And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did [it] to one of the least of these My brethren, you did [it] to Me.' "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 'for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 'I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.' "Then they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?' "Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do [it] to one of the least of these, you did not do [it] to Me.' "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Thank you for posting Mathew’s gospel on what will happen when we come before Jesus, Our Savior, in judgment.

It tells much more clearly than I can ever tell it why all Christians are called to perform acts of mercy. Jesus demands it of us. He doen’t want lukewarm followers. We are to be on fire for him.

I think you’re not catching what he really means. Many churches think good works is the way to salvation. If you do enough of them you can work your way into heaven. I think he’s saying that that’s what ‘religious’ people think and it’s wrong thinking. There’s nothing wrong with doing acts of charity. It’s thinking you’re working your way to heaven and salvation that is wrong.

When I think of how I could have turned out (I had a sister who was an alcoholic, married seven times, and a brother who died of alcoholism as well, and another brother who drinks too much), I AM amazed that God kept me from doing a lot of things I would be ashamed of today. My life wasn’t perfect and I was no angel, but I, too, could have been a drunk or promiscuous or really screwed up. He saved me from that and I can’t thank Him enough.

And too many of us think we have to ‘perform’ in order to win God’s approval. He only wants our hearts. He’ll take care of the rest.

That’s true and we do have to do good works after we come to faith. But, as I said before, if we use those good works to get us into heaven, we’re on the wrong track.
