Peace is not to be Placed in Men
THE VOICE OF CHRIST MY CHILD, if you place your peace in any creature because of your own feeling or for the sake of his company, you will be unsettled and entangled. But if you have recourse to the ever-living and abiding Truth, you will not grieve if a friend should die or forsake you. Your love for your friend should be grounded in Me, and for My sake you should love whoever seems to be good and is very dear to you in this life. Without Me friendship has no strength and cannot endure. Love which I do not bind is neither true nor pure. You ought, therefore, to be so dead to such human affections as to wish as far as lies within you to be without the fellowship of men. Man draws nearer to God in proportion as he withdraws farther from all earthly comfort. And he ascends higher to God as he descends lower into himself and grows more vile in his own eyes. He who attributes any good to himself hinders God's grace from coming into his heart, for the grace of the Holy Spirit seeks always the humble heart. If you knew how to annihilate yourself completely and empty yourself of all created love, then I should overflow in you with great grace. When you look to creatures, the sight of the Creator is taken from you. Learn, therefore, to conquer yourself in all things for the sake of your Maker. Then will you be able to attain to divine knowledge. But anything, no matter how small, that is loved and regarded inordinately keeps you back from the highest good and corrupts the soul.

Proves my point. Jesus didn’t say not to grieve because he knew it was part of the human heart and process of loss.

Is it speaking to the fact that we know they are in heaven. I think Mary grieved because she saw the terrible physical punishment her son underwent. Of course we know they are in heaven. But the piece talked about not grieving, which as I stated, is nonsense. Mary grieved not only for the physical punishment, but for the loss of her son. Anyone who loses a loved one grieves for the loss because it is the way The Creator designed us. I think The Creator knew what He was doing.

I ran across a scripture that I think sheds light on this. John 11, verse 33-35. In the text of the scripture Christ is “deeply moved” and even weeps at the death of Lazarus. But the commentary I was reading says that “deeply moved” is the translation of the Greek word meaning literally the snort of a warhorse or a horse in a race. It is a different feeling than grief alone, as I picture it, it encompasses anger and energy and impatience, outrage. The dead rise in a relationship with Christ and death is an outrage. I believe Christ weeps for all of sin and death, with us, as well as beyond for it is frustrating and unnecessary, not what God wishes for us, for there to be death and grief at all. In another sense, to weep is unecessary because we live in Christ (and it is this sense that I think Thomas a Kempis means for his devotional here) and yet the deepest and most profound sadness is warranted for the barrier of sin and death that Christ overcomes. The frustration or impatience exists because it is inevitable that there is grief in a world with sin, even for believers. So the snort of the warhorse. We don’t dare ignore or minimize the grief in others when we face it because it is love and must be respected, but balancing this is hope and faith. Perhaps even joy.

Thank you for the info. Please consider the following. Death was created by God as was the physical response to it. The manner in which each of us responds is not created by God given the "free will" factor. The example is that Jesus reacted as was his nature, whereas you and I would not react in kind. The dead rise in a spiritual relationship with Christ and God. Lazurus was the physical interaction with Jesus that those who came after will not have due to the degradation of the body. We don’t dare ignore or minimize the grief in others when we face it because it is love and must be respected, but balancing this is hope and faith. Perhaps even joy. Yet isn't that exactly what the original piece was doing in advising against mourning in grief. That isn't respectful or logical. Let me know if you feel joy when a loved one passes. I'm even feeling extreme sadness for a friend right now as he deals with the possibility of putting his wonderful pet down today. Should he and his wife be joyful at this prospect?

You didn’t read my post. Imitation of Christ is a noble aspiration, however, you can’t raise people from the dead, weren’t there to see how Jesus really acted, ect. You are supposed to aspire to the spiritual qualities of Jesus while not giving up yourself...the you that God, the Father created.
