Only a small handful of Smiths followers were allowed to see the plates. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I've read that he never showed anyone the golden plates. He kept giving some story about why he cant show them and then the final story was that he buried them somewhere.

His supposed Egyptian scrolls that he found in Pennsylvania that he interpreted to say a tribe of Israelis came to America in 600 BC then later when scholars decoded them said nothing like he ( Smith ) said. The Mormon answer is the original scrolls have been misplaced or stolen.
Mormonism is based on the ramblings of one man, just like Islam, they are just more peaceful aside from the few massacres they have had.

Eleven men were shown the plates. 8 were shown the plates by Smith himself. 3 were shown the plates, the translators and a couple of other items by the Angel who called himself Moroni. The testimonies of the two groups of men are published in every copy of the Book of Mormon. The 3 primary witnesses were particularly interesting. Those individuals were challenged their entire life about their testimony. All 3 became disaffected from the Church for various lengths of time. However, none ever wavered from what they wrote about seeing the plates, not even a little bit. In fact, I believe the one who never rejoined the body of the Church, David Whitmer, took out a full page newspaper ad shortly before his death to refute rumors to the contrary.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure I’ve read that he never showed anyone the golden plates. He
That is incorrect. A total of 11 people were shown the plates, including 3 who testified that they were shown the plates, at the same time, by an angel. 12 saw the plates if you include Smith’s wife who handled them. Of these 11, all were allowed to handle the plates and examine them.
Here is the statement of the 3 who were shown the plates by an angel: http://scriptures.lds.org/en/bm/thrwtnss
Here is the statement of 8 others who were allowed to examine the plates with no angelic ministrant involved: http://scriptures.lds.org/en/bm/eghtwtns
All of the 11 stood by their testimonies of having seen the plates and in the case of the 3 the angels throughout their life even though several fell away from the church, though some later returned.

I recently found them with my trustee Whites metal detector. They're on Ebay right now.

Here is the correction you asked for. Sometimes is pays to go to the source, instead of those who would villify it.
He, Joseph Smith, personally showed them to 8 witnesses, which witnesses recorded their testimonies here:
Testimony of 8 Witnesses
Further, 3 witnesses were shown the plates by the power of God, by the same angel, former prophet historian, that both hid up the record in 421 AD, and told Joseph about them, where they were, etc. Their testimony is recorded here:
Testimony of 3 Witnesses
The record, which was translated from said plates can be read here:
