Cardinal George Pell is the first Sydney Archbishop in 40 years to celebrate Mass in Latin according to the 1962 Roman Missal.
Celebrated at St Marys Cathedral on Saturday morning, the Mass was held to celebrate Pope Benedict's apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum which was published in July.
The letter, issued "motu proprio," on one's own initiative, explained new norms allowing for the use of the 1962 missal as an extraordinary form of the liturgical celebration. The norms took effect on 14 September.
The Oriens Foundation, which promotes understanding of the Tridentine rite, said the Mass "represented a significant event in the life of the local Church."
Oriens Foundation chairman Gary Scarrabelotti, said he hoped the event would provide the Church "with a splendid opportunity to draw to the attention of the Catholic people, and to the wider community, the great cultural and spiritual merits of the traditional form of Catholic worship."

Ping!
We had a notice at Church this weekend that our pastor will be celebrating a Latin Mass on Sunday, November 18. My wife and I are both excited about this, and we plan on attending.
The people of Syndey are fortunate in their shepherd, Cardinal Pell. Here in LA we’re stuck with Mahony the Phony.
I love the Mass in Latin, there’s something magical about it. I remember when I was in high school, I took two years of Latin and loved it. Out of all my friends there was only a couple of us who went to Catholic school and we were the only ones who could carry on a conversation in Latin, heeheee! The Mass in Latin brings back an old tradition and I’m all for it.
Oh sweet. We have been having Latin Masses now for two months, last 2 (-3) Sundays of the month; another priest is saying it, and our head priest helps. This week our head priest is in Nebraska, learning to lead it. When he comes back, they will be doing it every Sunday. It is quite beautiful; we have missals to follow along and the most heavenly choir singing. One of the older fathers helps; he learned it as a young priest, I imagine.
You will love it.
You go Eminence.
