Priests' opposing views on Latin Mass

In recent parish bulletins, Father J. Patrick Wissman, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Catherine of Siena Mission in Bolivar, Mo., lashed out at Pope Benedict's motu proprio Summorum Pontificum.

Father Wissman wrote, in part:

Father John Trigilio, Jr., president of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy, provided me (upon my asking) with the following response to Father Wissman's commentary.

...and seminarians would have to take courses in Latin. During many centuries seminarians have fallen through the cracks and not been able to reach the goal of the priesthood because Latin was too difficult for them.

Code of Canon Law:

Can. 249 — The program for priestly formation is to make provision that the students are not only carefully taught their native language but also that they are well skilled in the Latin language …

Not that anyone has bothered to read this canon.

It should be pointed out that the need for Latin goes beyond the Mass but also involves the ability to study theology and have immediate access to Church documents in their original language.

Oremus is Latin for "Let us pray". Are those the guys you want us to pray for? I think the intention was to pray for you, actually.

“I prefer this picture of the handsome devil Father Pat:”

What kind of priest would allow such a picture of himself to be made, much less circulated?

Oh I agree. I was being sarcastic in my previous remark.

I was not referring to you. I was thinking more of those who wear pointed hats and carry big sticks. My apologies; no offense was intended.

College seminarians at Sacred Heart in Detroit are required to take it.

Sounds like he had a difficult time with Latin at the seminary.

I’m glad someone is — I don’t think they’ve been teaching it in Boston, or at least they haven’t been requiring it.
