In Eyes Of A Prominent Seminary, A Woman's Place Is At Home
Star Tribune ^ | October 11, 2007 | Stephanie Simon

This fall, the internationally known seminary -- a century-old training ground for Southern Baptists -- began reinforcing those traditional gender roles with college classes in homemaking. The academic program, open only to women, includes lectures on laundering stubborn stains and a lab in baking cookies. Soon there will be classes teaching how to set tables and sustain lively dinner-time conversation.

It all sounds wonderful to sophomore Emily Felts, 19, who signed up as soon as she arrived on campus this fall. Several relatives have told Felts that she is selling herself short. They want her to become a lawyer, and she agrees she would make a good one. But that's not what she wants to do with her life. More to the point, it's not what she believes God wants of her. "My created purpose as a woman is to be a helper," she said firmly.

More moderate Southern Baptists disagree, and they counter with their own biblical references. When Jesus dined at the home of two sisters, he praised Mary, who spent the evening studying his teachings, above Martha, who did chores. Elsewhere in the New Testament, the apostle Paul writes that "there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ."We're confusing 1950s culture with the teaching of Scripture," said Wade Burleson, a Southern Baptist pastor in Oklahoma.

I’m going to don my anti-radiation suit, get my popcorn, and watch. This could potentially get interesting.

Ah, wall. You and James actually think I would harangue you for this?

It took me some time and research, but I came to the conclusion long ago that ‘equality’ was something sold in a pretty package to get women in the workforce for several reasons:

1. More tax dollars.
2. Devalue the family.
3. Higher income = increased consumption.

"My created purpose as a woman is to be a helper," she said

Honey, might I remind you that you said "helper" not "slave". She's already alerted the world she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer if she doesn't know how to set a table at age 19. My kids could run a household by age 8 save the driving to the grocery store but then some 2 & 3 year olds can navigate the roads rather well according to another thread.

If you ever wonder why more women don’t vote Republican, maybe this should be exhibit A.

‘Zactly. I got those skills... sort of... at home (I can cook and clean! I just don’t much right now). At college I learned a skill to earn me money until my knight in shining armor showed up. Well, found him, now I’m using my skills to earn cash until the kids show up. Then I can use my home-maker skill set, but my software engineer skill set isn’t a waste of time.

Seems at the very least this course could include classes on running a home based business... most of the preachers’ wives I’ve known taught piano or something for a little spending money.

If a woman wants to be something other than a homemaker there are plenty of other colleges and universities. I don’t see this as any big deal.

Any woman who chooses not to vote Republican because a Christian college chooses to operate under the beliefs it to which it adheres isn't a conservative anyway.

“raising the bar...”

Don’t raise the bar any higher than it takes Wall to climb over it in 3 minutes.

Guest lecturer Ashley Smith, 30, confided that she sometimes resents her husband for advancing his career "while I'm changing diapers and getting poop all over me."

Maybe they need to offer a class in changing diapers successfully. My 7-year-old can do it.

I don't see what the problem is. It's not as if this course of study is the only option for women attending the school. It's simply being offered as a benefit for women who expect to be homemakers. *Obviously*, if they don't care to train for that role, they can just take other classes.

Quite an intuitive lead from “home ec courses at a Southern Baptist seminary” to “vote Republican.” Although if you mean that women vote Democrat because they use the kind of logic demonstrated by your post, maybe you’re on to something.

(Not very flattering towards women, of course ...)
