Mitt's Mission
Newsweek ^ | Oct. 8, 2007 issue | Jonathan Darman and Lisa Miller

For Mitt Romney, it all started in a two-story, wood-framed house on a busy street in Pontiac, Mich. Painted beige, encircled by an asphalt lot that would hardly hold a dozen cars, the building manages to look both decrepit and picturesque, like a million other urban churches across the country. Today it houses the Unity Church of Practical Christianity, but until Romney was 10, it was the Mormon church he attended with his family—at least twice a day on Sunday, and one night a week for youth group.

“Anyone who would consider “baptism of the dead” a political issue, is silly. Having been raised a Southern Baptist, now a United Methodist, married to a man who was raised Catholic, I am quite aware that all faiths, even the Christian religions have differences between them that are arguable.”

this is true, but many of the issues you might have in your mind pale in comparison to the problems within mormonism.

It is one thing for christians to disagree about justification or the sabbath.
It is entirely on a different plane when a religion teaches its members that God was once a man like them, and that they will become gods like Him.

Do I have a problem voting for a man who thinks he will become an exalted God someday?
I guess I do.

And if Mitt’s followers and Mormonism apologists can’t shut you up by calling you a bigot, they will try to have you silenced at FR.

Is is it bigotry to point out that they are taught they will become gods?

You'll have to ask Mitt's Mormon brigade, they appear to be the arbiters of the terms and conditions at FR on Mitt threads now. Frankly, Mormonism is based on the most basic bigotry imaginable, as the 'first vision' message (whichever of the three different claims you read) from Joe Smith shows ... ALL Christendom was apostate to young Joe. Unless something has changed since Joe claimed God reestablish the priesthood able to give or take the Holy Spirit with him, and now the Mormons allow Christians to be saved (but of course the baptism for the dead will have to finish your rites of passage into heaven if you don't get it from Mormons in this life) ... which only goes to show that Mormonsism hasn't a clue what Salvation and 'in Christ' means.

So, why didn’t your fellow Mormon, tracer, apologize to me directly when he attempted to besmirch my character?

Oh, that’s right... he’s a Mormon and blameless in your eyes.

You only see bigotry when you believe it is directed at you, Spiff.

You NEVER ask one of your fellow Mormons to hold back their slander.

You wrote: “I’ve read some Mormon literature and it said that Jesus had a prior existence as a spirit being on another planet, and was created by the Mormon god through sex with one of his cellestial wives.”

What you read was ANTI Mormon literature and it’s out there in abundance. It’s a regular industry.

No, it was not any "anti-mormon literature". It was from Mormon writings themselves. Are you denying that is what Mormonism teaches?

You'll note that your question was not answered.

Yes, that was noted.

Fine. And you as a moderator should put an end to all of this anti-Mormon bigotry that develops from the mere mention of Romney's faith.

So questioning the teachings of the Mormon religion and the assertions it purports to be the absolute truth are now characterized as "bigotry"?

My comment to that is it smacks of left wing smear tactics.

May I ask you a question?

You said you were a Catholic woman who married a Mormon man in an LDS Ward House (not Temple).

There is a way in which that arrangement actually makes sense, considering the logical conclusions of both those religions.

Possibly.

No....not possibly.

I am telling you from personal experience..this has happened to me, and friends of mine. In real time, not here on the net either.

But I'm sure that it was done in response to attacks on the Mormon faith. I highly doubt that a Mormon would enter a thread about another religion to denigrate those beliefs.

Again, you would be wrong. It's happened here also.

I've been here 10 years and I've never seen it.

IF, you've never seen it. You are blind.

And if I did see it, I would definitely say something to the person doing it. But people like you seem to feel free to jump into any thread that makes the slightest mention of the LDS Church or a member so that you can start bashing the religion. That is bigotry and intolerance.

I feel sorry for you. When every query, every question is deemed intolerance, and bigotry. That's sad, and myopic.

If you want to question any religion's roots and foundations, you may find a religion-oriented website to be more appropriate for that kind of thing.

When I read others professing here what I don't believe...whether it be liberalism, satanism, Marxism, Mormonism, Hinduism, Motherearthism..I might comment. I'm sure you do the same. That's what we do here on FR.

Even then, you shoujld do it respectfully and with a little tact. But Free Republic is a conservative political forum and such attacks against any religion shared by a number of conservatives and FReepers is divisive, contentious, and inappropriate.

If you would be so kind and point out the times I've been inappropriate...I'd be obliged to offer an apology. The FACT is many Christians view Mormonism as a cult. That doesn't make it a fact that the LDS Church is actually a cult. Many leftists believe that Free Republic is a racist hate site. That doesn't make it true.

It's still a FACT which I know you know....and one that is widely held by Christians throughout the world. And i know you know it to be true. So, that is why you get the comments that you do. To ignore that...is folly.

And when you cry foul..when Christians object to Mormonism is not being truthful to yourself...and the thousands of Freepers here.

Wow, its 4+ hours later and FR is still here!

There was a Mormon in Arizona who was excommunicated for researching the Church and telling others. Thats a no-no.
There is a thread here somewhere.

Anyway, I will vote for Mitt, in order to avoid Hillary. But it won’t do any good. He is sure to lose agianst her.
Mormons think we are tough on them, wait until her goons get started. Everyone in AMerica will know the whole history of that church.

To say something nice about Mitt, he seems to have an awesome wife.
:)

Best one can tell, his entire family is awesome ... and I mean that, good sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. A loving family is a huge asset to a man in such a high position of responsibilities. I just wish he were not a Mormon. THAT stigma is going to be extremely difficult to overcome against the dnc exposure machine run by the sycophantic liberal butt kissers of mainstream media.

Exactly.

And he isn’t a good enough candidate to fight for. If he were to have a real conservative record, minus all the recent flip-flops, it might be different.

Open threads on the Religion Forum are for debate not ecumenicism.

Closed threads on the Religion Forum are protected from challenges. Prayer threads, devotionals and threads marked “caucus” are closed.

Any thread on the Religion Forum can be designated a caucus provided neither the article nor replies attack or speak on behalf of other confessions.

Freepers and Lurkers who are disturbed by open challenges to their religious beliefs should seek out the closed threads for safe harbor.

I see we've been moved, per request, to the religion area...

And you as a moderator should put an end to all of this anti-Mormon bigotry that develops from the mere mention of Romney's faith.

That bigotry accusation swings both ways:

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1/19#19
17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself adelivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I bsaw two cPersonages, whose brightness and dglory defy all description, estanding above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My fBeloved gSon. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to ainquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all awrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those bprofessors were all ccorrupt; that: “they ddraw near to me with their lips, but their ehearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the fcommandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the gpower thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself alying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, bmother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother, “I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”
