Tuesday of the Twenty-fifth Week

Reading 1
Ez 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20
King Darius issued an order to the officials
of West-of-Euphrates:
“Let the governor and the elders of the Jews
continue the work on that house of God;
they are to rebuild it on its former site.
I also issue this decree
concerning your dealing with these elders of the Jews
in the rebuilding of that house of God:
From the royal revenue, the taxes of West-of-Euphrates,
let these men be repaid for their expenses, in full and without delay.
I, Darius, have issued this decree;
let it be carefully executed.”
The elders of the Jews continued to make progress in the building,
supported by the message of the prophets,
Haggai and Zechariah, son of Iddo.
They finished the building according to the command
of the God of Israel
and the decrees of Cyrus and Darius
and of Artaxerxes, king of Persia.
They completed this house on the third day of the month Adar,
in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.
The children of Israel–priests, Levites,
and the other returned exiles–
celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy.
For the dedication of this house of God,
they offered one hundred bulls,
two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs,
together with twelve he-goats as a sin-offering for all Israel,
in keeping with the number of the tribes of Israel.
Finally, they set up the priests in their classes
and the Levites in their divisions
for the service of God in Jerusalem,
as is prescribed in the book of Moses.
The exiles kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.
The Levites, every one of whom had purified himself for the occasion,
sacrificed the Passover for the rest of the exiles,
for their brethren the priests, and for themselves.

Appreciation sent back to you, too, for stopping by. This morning I set my alarm for the PM instead of the AM so had to rush to get to Bible Study and to partially set up for Mass before so I could finish in the 10 minutes remaining until we start our Daily Rosary. It was a rush!
Felt a little sheepish when the priest had to light the candles for me, however. LOL!
Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Due to her feast day on September 15, the month of September has traditionally been set aside to honor Our Lady of Sorrows. All the sorrows of Mary (the prophecy of Simeon, the three days' loss, etc.) are merged in the supreme suffering at the Passion. In the Passion, Mary suffered a martyrdom of the heart because of Our Lord's torments and the greatness of her love for Him. "She it was," says Pope Pius XII, "who immune from all sin, personal or inherited, and ever more closely united with her Son, offered Him on Golgotha to the Eternal Father together with the holocaust of her maternal rights and motherly love. As a new Eve, she made this offering for all the children of Adam contaminated through his unhappy fall. Thus she, who was the mother of our Head according to the flesh, became by a new title of sorrow and glory the spiritual mother of all His members."

With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. Most holy Virgin. and Mother, whose soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the Passion of thy divine Son, and who in His glorious Resurrection wast filled with never-ending joy at His triumph; obtain for us who call upon thee, so to be partakers in the adversities of Holy Church and the sorrows of the Sovereign Pontiff, as to be found worthy to rejoice with them in the consolations for which we pray, in the charity and peace of the same Christ our Lord. IN HONOR OF THE SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
O most holy and afflicted Virgin! Queen of Martyrs! thou who didst stand motionless beneath the Cross, witnessing the agony of thy expiring Son--through the unceasing sufferings of thy life of sorrow, and the bliss which now more than amply repays thee for thy past trials, look down with a mother's tenderness and pity on me, who kneel before thee to venerate thy dolors, and place my requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of thy wounded heart; present them, I beseech thee, on my behalf, to Jesus Christ, through the merits of His own most sacred death and passion, together with thy sufferings at the foot of the cross, and through the united efficacy of both obtain the grant of my present petition. Our Lady of Sorrows: Sorrowful Mother
to At the Cross Her Station Keeping
The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows consists of 7 groups of 7 beads, with 3 additional beads and a Crucifix. Say each of the sorrow below followed by 7 Hail Mary's. The 7 groups of 7 Hail Mary's are recited in remembrance of
the 7 Sorrows of Mary:
1. The prophecy of Simeon.
2. The flight into Egypt.
3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
4. Mary meets Jesus carrying His cross.
5. The Crucifixion
6. Mary received the Body of Jesus from the cross
7. The Body of Jesus is placed in a tomb.
3 Hail Mary's are added in remembrance of the tears Mary shed because of the suffering of her Divine Son. These are said to obtain true sorrow for our sins.

Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, we now implore, both for the present and for the hour of our death, the intercession of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, whose holy soul was pierced at the time of Thy passion by a sword of grief. Grant us this favor, O Saviour of the world, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
The Blessed Virgin Mary grants 7 special graces to the souls who honor her daily by saying 7 Hail Mary's

Here are the 7 special graces:
1. I will grant peace to their families.
2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.
3. I will console them in their pains, and I will accompany them in their work.
4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.
5. I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy, and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.
6. I will visibly help them at the moment of their death; they will see the face of their mother.
7. I have obtained (this grace) from my divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son and I will be their eternal consolation and joy.

Third Sorrow of Mary, The Loss of Jesus in the Temple:
"My Mother did not look in the Temple for Me, and so lost Me for three days (like My three days in the tomb). My Priests are failing today to look for Me in the 'Temple,' in obedience to My Pope and to the authority I have placed in My Church. My Church is in its THREE DAYS OF DARKNESS and has much to suffer for its disobedience. Offer the pain in My Mother's Hearts that My priests might return to MY TEMPLE and find me again." (There was an interior Knowledge that Jesus was Not saying this was true of all His priests, but rather He was mourning over those priests who were doing this, plus asking for prayer for them.)
PRAYER: "I pray for the gift of obedience to overcome the temptation to Pride."
Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 1 Glory Be, and the Litany
Fourth Sorrow of Mary, Mary Meets Jesus on the Road to Calvary:
"My priests will no longer accept the pain of the WAY OF THE CROSS. They no longer walk with Me as My Mother did. They especially refuse the pain and sacrifice of their vow of celibacy. Sexual sins are destroying My Church." (Again, as above, Jesus was not saying this was true of all priests, but was grieving over those who were doing this.)
PRAYER: "I pray for the gift of chastity to overcome the temptation to lust."

Offering
Eternal Father, we offer Thee the Blood, the Passion, and the Death of Jesus Christ, the sorrows of Mary most holy, and of St. Joseph, in satisfaction for our sins, in aid of the holy souls in Purgatory, for the needs of holy Mother Church, and for the conversion of sinners.
Virgin most sorrowful, pray for us!
Prayer Before an Image of the Mother of Sorrows
O most compassionate Mother, what bitterness filled thy heart when thou didst embrace the lacerated Body of thy Son with thy virginal arms, press Him lovingly to thy maternal heart, and cover Him with tenderest kisses. I remind thee of this inexpressible bitterness, in virtue of which I beseech thee to obtain for me forgiveness of my sins.
O Mary, pray for me, a poor sinner, to thy Jesus Whom thou didst hold in thy arms. Take the wounded Body of thy Son into thy maternal arms, and offer Him in this condition to the Heavenly Father for me. Offer His pierced Heart, His Passion and Death, and all thy own immeasurable sorrows to obtain grace and mercy for me, particularly (mention the favor you desire here). Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted
Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our most compassionate Mother, we present ourselves in thy sight in all humility, and with full confidence we implore thee for thy maternal patronage.
Thou hast been proclaimed by Holy Church the Comforter of the Afflicted, and to thee constant recourse is had by the sorrowful in their afflictions, the sick in their maladies, the dying in their agony, the poor in their straitened circumstances, those who stand in all manner of need in both public and private calamities; and from thee they all receive consolation and strength.

Prayer to the Mother of Sorrow
O Mother of Sorrows, by the anguish and love with which thou didst stand at the cross of Jesus, stand by me in my last agony. To thy maternal heart I commend the last three hours of my life. Offer these hours to the Eternal Father in union with the agony of our dearest Lord in atonement for my sins. Offer to the Eternal Father the most Precious Blood of Jesus, mingled with your tears on Calvary, that I may obtain the grace of receiving Holy Communion with the most perfect love and contrition before my death, and that I may breathe forth my soul in the adorable Presence of Jesus.
Dearest Mother, when the moment of my death has at length come, present me as your child to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive me for having offended Him for I know not what I did. Beg Him to receive me into His kingdom of glory to be united with Him forever. Amen.

Thou didst cooperate in the benefit of my redemption by thine innumerable afflictions and by offering to the Eternal Father His only begotten Son as a holocaust and victim of propitiation for my sins. I thank thee for the unspeakable love which led thee to deprive thyself of the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus, true God and true Man, to save me, a sinner. Oh, make use of the unfailing intercession of thy sorrows with the Father and the Son, that I may steadfastly amend my life and never again crucify my loving Redeemer by new sins, and that, persevering till death in His grace. PRAYER TO OUR SORROWFUL MOTHER
O Mother of Sorrows, thou, who beneath the Cross of Jesus were given to us as our Mother, look down with pity on us, thy children, who weep and mourn in this valley of tears. By that sword of sorrow which pierced thy Heart when thou looked upon the Face of thy dead Son, obtain for us that comfort we so sorely need in our sufferings.
Thou were given to us our Mother in the hour of thy greatest grief that thou might be mindful of our frailty and the evils that press upon us. Without thy aid, O Sorrowful Mother, we cannot gain the victory in this struggle against flesh and blood. Therefore, we seek thy help, O Queen of Sorrows, lest we fall prey to the wiles of the enemy. We are orphans in need of the guiding hand of our Mother amid the dangers that threaten our destruction. Thou whose grief was boundless as the sea, grant us by the memory of those sorrows the strength to be victorious.
Intercede further, O Mother of Sorrows, for us and all who are near and dear to us, that we may ever do the Will of thy Son, and may direct all our actions to His honor, and to the furtherance of devotion to thy sorrows. Amen.

Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy Heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the Cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please Our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that: every thought of my mind and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy Divine Son, Jesus; keep me in His grace and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in Heaven and sing thy glories.
Most holy Virgin and Mother, whose soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the Passion of thy Divine Son, and who in His glorious Resurrection wast filled with never ending joy at His triumph, obtain for us who call upon thee, so to be partakers in the adversities of Holy Church and the Sorrows of the Sovereign Pontiff, as to be found worthy to rejoice with them in the consolations for which we pray, in the charity and peace of the same Christ our Lord. Daily Recommendation:
Pray 1 Hail Mary for each of the 7 Sorrows Our Lady experienced. This is easy and can be done anywhere, anytime, without having to have your prayerbook with you. You just have to memorize the 7 Sorrows, and you're set! This will at least show Our Lady that you acknowledge her sorrows, and remember them in appreciation. I'm sure she will be happy with you, and shower you with her special blessings.

The True Kinsmen of Jesus
[19] Then His (Jesus’) mother and His brethren came to Him, but they
could not reach Him for the crowd. [20] And He was told, “Your mother
and your brethren are standing outside, desiring to see You.” [21] But
He said to them, “My mother and my brethren are those who hear the
word of God and do it.”
Commentary:
19-21. These words of our Lord show us that fulfillment of the Will of
God is more important than kinship and that, therefore, our Lady is
more united to her Son by virtue of her perfect fulfillment of what God
asked of her, than by the Holy Spirit’s using her to make Christ’s body
(cf. notes on Matthew 12:48-50 and Mark 3:31-35).
[Notes on Matthew 12:48-50 states:
48-50. Jesus obviously loved His Mother and St. Joseph. He uses this
episode to teach us that in His Kingdom human ties do not take prece-
dence. In Luke 8:19 the same teaching is to be found. Jesus regards
the person who does the will of His Heavenly Father as a member of
His own family. Therefore, even though it means going against natural
family feelings, a person should do just that when needs be in order to
perform the mission the Father has entrusted to him (cf. Luke 2:49).
We can say that Jesus loved Mary more because of the bonds between
them created by grace than because He was her son by natural gene-
ration: Mary’s divine motherhood is the source of all our Lady’s other
prerogatives; but this very motherhood is, in its turn, the first and grea-
test of the graces with which Mary was endowed.]
[Notes on Mark 3:31-35 states:
31-35. In Aramaic, the language used by the Jews, the word “brethren”
is a broad term indicating kinship: nephews, first cousins, and relatives
in general are called `brethren’ (for further explanation cf. note on Mark
6:1-3). “Jesus did not say this to disown His mother, but to show that
she is worthy of honor not only account of having given birth to Jesus,
but also because she has all the virtues” (Theoplylact, “Enarratio In
Evangelium Marci, in loc.”).
Therefore, the Church reminds us that the Blessed Virgin “in the course
of her Son’s preaching received the words whereby, in extolling a king-
dom beyond the concerns and ties of flesh and blood, He declared
blessed those who heard and kept the word of God as she was faithfully
doing” (Vatican II, “Lumen Gentium”, 58).
Our Lord, then, is also telling us that if we follow Him we will share His
life more intimately than if were a member of His family. St. Thomas
explains this by saying that Christ “had an eternal generation and a
generation in time, and gave preference to the former. Those who do
the will of the Father reach Him by Heavenly generation [...]. Everyone
who does the will of the Father, that is to say, who obeys Him, is a
brother or sister of Christ, because he is like Him who fulfilled the will
of His Father. But he who not only obeys but converts others, begets
Christ in them, and thus becomes like the Mother of Christ” (”Commen-
tary on St. Matthew”, 12, 49-50.)

Tuesday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
I can imagine if you or I had seen Our Lady after the Crucifixion, we should have been astonished at her peace. I think she came down from Calvary consoling Mary Magdalene, and what we do know of her during those terrible days after the death of her Son seems to confirm that. We have just one scene. She is in the Upper Room. An ordinary mother could never have dared to face again that Upper Room where everything reminded her of Him, and of Him in His most poignant moments. Every memory would be a pain, no object of consolation would be there, but a well-spring of sorrow. She is there among a crowd (we are told the very numbers); there is no nursing of her grief away from everyone, but she stayed in the very midst of them all, as if she had to give them consolation. I feel sure many eyes were dried when she came swiftly into their midst. It was almost as if she had never had a Son. They were all her dear children, in the Upper Room. Was there ever a mother that might have been justified in hating mankind, and in brooding over her loss, as if she had a grievance against the world? Yet the one thing about her and her Son is they have no grievance against anyone. She had a memory charged, of course, with ten thousand sorrows and a heart now overloaded with ten thousand loves, but no grievance against the world.
Where did our dear Lady learn this perfect attitude towards suffering? — From her Son. It came of that grace that came to her in the moment of her soul's joy, the grace won for her by the death of her Son foreseen. She learned compassion from Him who had compassion on the multitude.

May the God who causes his name to live there overthrow any king or people who dares to defy this and destroy the Temple of God in Jerusalem! I, Darius, have issued this decree. Let it be obeyed to the letter!’ The elders of the Jews prospered with their building, inspired by Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished the building in accordance with the order of the God of Israel and the order of Cyrus and of Darius. This Temple was finished on the twenty-third day of the month of Adar; it was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. The Israelites – the priests, the Levites and the remainder of the exiles – joyfully dedicated this Temple of God; for the dedication of this Temple of God they offered one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs and, as a sacrifice for sin for the whole of Israel, twelve he-goats, corresponding to the number of the tribes of Israel. Then they installed the priests according to their orders in the service of the Temple of God in Jerusalem, as is written in the Book of Moses. The exiles celebrated the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Levites, as one man, had purified themselves; all were pure, so they sacrificed the passover for all the exiles, for their brothers the priests and for themselves. |

| The church, like a vine, grows and spreads everywhere | |
| They are straying across the mountains and the high hills, they have been scattered over all the face of the earth. What does this mean, scattered over all the face of the earth? That they attach themselves to earthly things, the things that glitter on the face of the earth: they love and desire them. They do not want to die and be hidden away in Christ. Over all the face of the earth not only because they love earthly things but because across all the earth there are sheep astray. They are everywhere, but one thing, pride, is the mother of them all, just as Christians who are spread over all the world have one mother, the Church. So it is not to be wondered at that pride gives birth to dissension while love generates unity. The Church is the mother of all, and everywhere the shepherd in her seeks those who are astray, strengthens those who are weak, cares for the sick and puts the broken together again. Many of them are not even known to one another, but she knows them all because she is merged with them all. She is like a vine that has grown and sprouted everywhere. Those in love with earthly things are like sterile shoots pruned away by the grower’s knife because of their sterility, cut away so that the vine should not have to be cut down. And those sterile shoots, once they are pruned away, lie on the ground and stay there. But the vine grows over all, and it knows those shoots that remain part of it, and it knows the cut-off shoots that lie next to it. But from where they lie she calls them back, for as St Paul says of the broken branches, God has the power to graft them back again. Whether you speak of sheep straying away from the flock or branches cut off from the vine, God is equally able to call back the lost sheep and to graft back the lost branches: the Lord, the true vine-dresser. They have been scattered over all the face of the earth and no-one misses them, no-one calls them back – no-one among the bad shepherds. No-one misses them – that is, no man does. Well then, shepherds, hear the words of the Lord. As I live, says the Lord God... See how he starts. It is like an oath sworn by God, calling his very life to witness. As I live, says the Lord God. The shepherds are dead but the sheep are safe. As I live, says the Lord God. What shepherds are dead? Those who have sought their own interests rather than Christ’s. So what of the shepherds who seek Christ’s interests and not their own? Of course there will be such shepherds, of course they will be found: there is no lack of them and there never will be. |

| Beware of Losing Your Roots | ||

Ezr 6:7-8, 12, 14-20 / Lk 8:19-21
The experience of being exiled is terrifying, because it cuts a person off from his roots and his community, and leaves him free-floating in an unknown place. Rootless and unconnected, who are we? A terrifying question, and one that had to be faced by a whole generation of Jews who were sent into exile in Babylon after a disastrous defeat that left Jerusalem and their temple in smoking ruins. They remained in exile for 70 years, long enough for almost all of them to die and for their children and grandchildren to grow up with no memory of home and little memory of their special relationship with the Lord. So when the King Darius set them free and sent them home, it hardly felt like home anymore. After so long a time, most of the people had lost their roots and their faith.
It can happen to us for any number of reasons, but usually quite gradually. Without noticing it, we can lose our roots. And when some turning point comes, some moment of decision, we can find ourselves without a rudder, without a North Star, flailing about and almost inevitably making bad choices.
Some of those exiled Jews reconnected with their roots and were a part of the celebrations we read about today. The rededication of their temple was about more than a building. It was about their remembering who they were at their very center. And that is the challenge for us, never to forget, never to allow that knowing to be eroded, but always to renew that identity which defines us as special and keeps us headed toward life: We are your people, Lord, and you are our God.

To Be or To Dream
Luke 8: 19-21
Petition: Jesus, may I step exactly where your feet have trod at every second of my life. 1. Back to the Drawing Board Suppose that one day your boss asks you to fulfill a difficult but very specific task and gives you a week to accomplish it. You begin working on the project and you suddenly find a quick and easy solution by just changing the goal. When the deadline arrives and you show the results that are different than those the boss explicitly requested. What do you think the boss is going to say? That you did the job well? So often the Bible and the Church express the details of how God wants things to be done. Have I really taken them to heart or do I just wing it because everybody else does? Do I do things haphazardly because I don’t want to put myself out? 2. A Reward Worth Getting Jesus said, My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it. I would venture to say that to hear these words from Christ on the day of judgment would be the greatest reward a soul could ever receive. You are my mother or brother. To live in the heart of Christ, like his Immaculate Mother, is indeed a privilege that money cannot buy. To even live here in this life always bringing Jesus consolation is something that every soul was made to achieve. When God, deep down in our consciences, conveys the verdict, Well done! , there is ample space for joy and intimate satisfaction. How can we achieve this? Then what’s the secret to eternal life? Honestly seeking to do his will lovingly and constantly. 3. Hidden Praise Jesus, because of his humility, did not want to publish his mother to be the best in the world, as they say. It seemed as though Jesus ignored his mother who came to accompany him during his public life. Nevertheless, the facts fit the pieces in the puzzle. Mary fits Jesus’ mysterious requisite to be treated as his mother and brothers by him. A teenaged virgin accepts unconditionally the plans of God explained by the Archangel Gabriel. This unconditional acceptance ushered in unbridled havoc for her as she fled to Egypt with an infant in her arms. She and Joseph were pursued to death by godless enemies. God’s will brought her into a foreign land that left her absolutely clueless. Her performance in bearing severe trials is unsurpassed in the history of man. No one has ever matched the simple acceptance of God’s plan like Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She acted on God’s words when she presented Jesus in the temple without needing to really do so, being a virgin and remaining one forever. Her obedience is worth imitating. Conversation with Christ: Lord, help me to be like Mary, ready for anything that divine providence asks of me. Help me to not seek peace when you are asking me to climb higher; help me to not seek consolation when you are calling me to greater generosity. Resolution: Lord, today I promise to pray my rosary with a greater devotion for your Mother because she is teaching me how to be called your brother. |
O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Meditation Ezra 6:7-8,12,14-20 After fifty years of exile in Babylon, the Jews were finally allowed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple, which lay in ruins. They set out enthusiastically, and God seemed to smile on their endeavor. Cyrus, the emperor, returned the gold utensils stolen from the Temple, and composed letters of safe passage. Their neighbors gifted them with valuables and necessities. Within a few months of their arrival in Jerusalem, they began keeping feast days and offering sacrifices on an open-air altar. They began the rebuilding project, stopping often to praise God loudly. But then things began to go awry. The work ground on slowly, with little visible progress. Their pagan neighbors tried to intimidate them and began bad-mouthing them to Cyrus and his successors. Discouraged, God’s people stopped their work. Through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, however, God admonished his people and encouraged them to press on. The Persian rulers also discovered Cyrus’ original decree and ordered the local authorities to enable the work and not interfere. The people rallied, and the Temple began to take shape once more. Has something like this ever happened to you? Have you ever set out energetically to do God’s work, but ended up disheartened or overwhelmed? It can be so easy to forget that it’s God’s work that you’re doing, not your own. If it is not done in his strength, for his glory, and with his love, we “labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1). It is vital to remember that the results, and their timing, are up to God alone. God is not finished with you. And he certainly hasn’t abandoned you! His “timely help” may come in a form we are not expecting (Hebrews 4:16). It may be a word that pierces us to the heart and galvanizes us into action. It may be the reinforcement of having someone join in the work. It may be a change in circumstances that removes an obstacle. Whatever shape it takes, we should be confident in this one thing: It will come! In the meantime, don’t lose heart. “Father, thank you for calling me to join your people in building your temple here on earth. Come live among us in power as we work together to give concrete form to your kingdom and to fling open its doors to the world.” Psalm 122:1-5; Luke 8:19-21 |
