will make manifest at the proper time,
the King of kings and Lord of lords,

Gospel
Lk 8:4-15
When a large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another
journeying to Jesus, he spoke in a parable.
A sower went out to sow his seed.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path and was trampled,
and the birds of the sky ate it up.
Some seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew,
it withered for lack of moisture.
Some seed fell among thorns,
and the thorns grew with it and choked it.
And some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew,
it produced fruit a hundredfold.
After saying this, he called out,
Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear.
Then his disciples asked him
what the meaning of this parable might be.
He answered,
Knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God
has been granted to you;
but to the rest, they are made known through parables
so that they may look but not see, and hear but not understand.
This is the meaning of the parable.
The seed is the word of God.
Those on the path are the ones who have heard,
but the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts
that they may not believe and be saved.
Those on rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear,
receive the word with joy, but they have no root;
they believe only for a time and fall away in time of temptation.
As for the seed that fell among thorns,
they are the ones who have heard, but as they go along,
they are choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life,
and they fail to produce mature fruit.
But as for the seed that fell on rich soil,
they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart,
and bear fruit through perseverance.

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Due to her feast day on September 15, the month of September has traditionally been set aside to honor Our Lady of Sorrows. All the sorrows of Mary (the prophecy of Simeon, the three days' loss, etc.) are merged in the supreme suffering at the Passion. In the Passion, Mary suffered a martyrdom of the heart because of Our Lord's torments and the greatness of her love for Him. "She it was," says Pope Pius XII, "who immune from all sin, personal or inherited, and ever more closely united with her Son, offered Him on Golgotha to the Eternal Father together with the holocaust of her maternal rights and motherly love. As a new Eve, she made this offering for all the children of Adam contaminated through his unhappy fall. Thus she, who was the mother of our Head according to the flesh, became by a new title of sorrow and glory the spiritual mother of all His members."

Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the Cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind, and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. Most holy Virgin. and Mother, whose soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the Passion of thy divine Son, and who in His glorious Resurrection wast filled with never-ending joy at His triumph; obtain for us who call upon thee, so to be partakers in the adversities of Holy Church and the sorrows of the Sovereign Pontiff, as to be found worthy to rejoice with them in the consolations for which we pray, in the charity and peace of the same Christ our Lord. IN HONOR OF THE SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
O most holy and afflicted Virgin! Queen of Martyrs! thou who didst stand motionless beneath the Cross, witnessing the agony of thy expiring Son--through the unceasing sufferings of thy life of sorrow, and the bliss which now more than amply repays thee for thy past trials, look down with a mother's tenderness and pity on me, who kneel before thee to venerate thy dolors, and place my requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of thy wounded heart; present them, I beseech thee, on my behalf, to Jesus Christ, through the merits of His own most sacred death and passion, together with thy sufferings at the foot of the cross, and through the united efficacy of both obtain the grant of my present petition. O most holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief you experienced when you witnessed the martyrdom, the crucifixion, and the death of your divine Son, look upon me with eyes of compassion, and awaken in my heart a tender commiseration for those sufferings, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affection for the passing joys of this earth, I may sigh after the eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforward all my thoughts and all my actions may be directed towards this one most desirable object. Consecration to Our Lady of Sorrows Most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, Mary, would that I could be in Heaven, there to contemplate the honors rendered to thee by the Most Holy Trinity and by the whole Heavenly Court! But since I am still a pilgrim in this vale of tears, receive from me, thy unworthy servant and a poor sinner, the most sincere homage and the most perfect act of vassalage a human creature can offer thee. In thy Immaculate Heart, pierced with so many swords of sorrow, I place today my poor soul forever; receive me as a partaker in thy dolors, and never suffer that I should depart from that Cross on which thy only begotten Son expired for me. With thee, O Mary, I will endure all the sufferings, contradictions, infirmities, with which it will please thy Divine Son to visit me in this life. Our Lady of Sorrows: Sorrowful Mother
to At the Cross Her Station Keeping
The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows consists of 7 groups of 7 beads, with 3 additional beads and a Crucifix. Say each of the sorrow below followed by 7 Hail Mary's. The 7 groups of 7 Hail Mary's are recited in remembrance of
the 7 Sorrows of Mary:
1. The prophecy of Simeon.
2. The flight into Egypt.
3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
4. Mary meets Jesus carrying His cross.
5. The Crucifixion
6. Mary received the Body of Jesus from the cross
7. The Body of Jesus is placed in a tomb.
3 Hail Mary's are added in remembrance of the tears Mary shed because of the suffering of her Divine Son. These are said to obtain true sorrow for our sins.
The concluding prayer follows:

Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, we now implore, both for the present and for the hour of our death, the intercession of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, whose holy soul was pierced at the time of Thy passion by a sword of grief. Grant us this favor, O Saviour of the world, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
The Blessed Virgin Mary grants 7 special graces to the souls who honor her daily by saying 7 Hail Mary's
and meditating on her tears and dolors. This devotion was passed on by St. Bridget of Sweden.
Here are the 7 special graces:
1. I will grant peace to their families.
2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.
3. I will console them in their pains, and I will accompany them in their work.
4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.
5. I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy, and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.
6. I will visibly help them at the moment of their death; they will see the face of their mother.
7. I have obtained (this grace) from my divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son and I will be their eternal consolation and joy.

PRAYER: "I pray for the gift of respect for life to overcome the temptation to anger."

Third Sorrow of Mary, The Loss of Jesus in the Temple:
"My Mother did not look in the Temple for Me, and so lost Me for three days (like My three days in the tomb). My Priests are failing today to look for Me in the 'Temple,' in obedience to My Pope and to the authority I have placed in My Church. My Church is in its THREE DAYS OF DARKNESS and has much to suffer for its disobedience. Offer the pain in My Mother's Hearts that My priests might return to MY TEMPLE and find me again." (There was an interior Knowledge that Jesus was Not saying this was true of all His priests, but rather He was mourning over those priests who were doing this, plus asking for prayer for them.)
PRAYER: "I pray for the gift of obedience to overcome the temptation to Pride."
Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 1 Glory Be, and the Litany
Fourth Sorrow of Mary, Mary Meets Jesus on the Road to Calvary:
"My priests will no longer accept the pain of the WAY OF THE CROSS. They no longer walk with Me as My Mother did. They especially refuse the pain and sacrifice of their vow of celibacy. Sexual sins are destroying My Church." (Again, as above, Jesus was not saying this was true of all priests, but was grieving over those who were doing this.)
PRAYER: "I pray for the gift of chastity to overcome the temptation to lust."

Fifth Sorrow of Mary,Jesus is Nailed to the Cross:

Offering
Eternal Father, we offer Thee the Blood, the Passion, and the Death of Jesus Christ, the sorrows of Mary most holy, and of St. Joseph, in satisfaction for our sins, in aid of the holy souls in Purgatory, for the needs of holy Mother Church, and for the conversion of sinners.
Virgin most sorrowful, pray for us!
Prayer Before an Image of the Mother of Sorrows
O most compassionate Mother, what bitterness filled thy heart when thou didst embrace the lacerated Body of thy Son with thy virginal arms, press Him lovingly to thy maternal heart, and cover Him with tenderest kisses. I remind thee of this inexpressible bitterness, in virtue of which I beseech thee to obtain for me forgiveness of my sins.
O Mary, pray for me, a poor sinner, to thy Jesus Whom thou didst hold in thy arms. Take the wounded Body of thy Son into thy maternal arms, and offer Him in this condition to the Heavenly Father for me. Offer His pierced Heart, His Passion and Death, and all thy own immeasurable sorrows to obtain grace and mercy for me, particularly (mention the favor you desire here). Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted
Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our most compassionate Mother, we present ourselves in thy sight in all humility, and with full confidence we implore thee for thy maternal patronage.
Thou hast been proclaimed by Holy Church the Comforter of the Afflicted, and to thee constant recourse is had by the sorrowful in their afflictions, the sick in their maladies, the dying in their agony, the poor in their straitened circumstances, those who stand in all manner of need in both public and private calamities; and from thee they all receive consolation and strength.
Our dearest Mother, turn upon us also, wretched sinners that we are, thy merciful eyes, and graciously accept our humble and confident prayers. Aid us in all our spiritual and temporal necessities; deliver us from all evil, and especially from sin, which is the greatest evil, and from all danger of falling into it; obtain for us from thy Son Jesus every blessing of which thou seest we stand in need, both in soul and in body, and especially the greatest blessing of all, which is Divine grace. Receive us all, our most tender Mother, under thy loving and mighty protection, that we may be enabled to live virtuously, die holily and attain to everlasting happiness in heaven. Amen.

Prayer to the Mother of Sorrow
O Mother of Sorrows, by the anguish and love with which thou didst stand at the cross of Jesus, stand by me in my last agony. To thy maternal heart I commend the last three hours of my life. Offer these hours to the Eternal Father in union with the agony of our dearest Lord in atonement for my sins. Offer to the Eternal Father the most Precious Blood of Jesus, mingled with your tears on Calvary, that I may obtain the grace of receiving Holy Communion with the most perfect love and contrition before my death, and that I may breathe forth my soul in the adorable Presence of Jesus.
Dearest Mother, when the moment of my death has at length come, present me as your child to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive me for having offended Him for I know not what I did. Beg Him to receive me into His kingdom of glory to be united with Him forever. Amen.

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Immaculate Mother of God, who didst endure a martyrdom of love and grief beholding the sufferings and sorrows of Jesus! Thou didst cooperate in the benefit of my redemption by thine innumerable afflictions and by offering to the Eternal Father His only begotten Son as a holocaust and victim of propitiation for my sins. I thank thee for the unspeakable love which led thee to deprive thyself of the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus, true God and true Man, to save me, a sinner. O Mother of Sorrows, thou, who beneath the Cross of Jesus were given to us as our Mother, look down with pity on us, thy children, who weep and mourn in this valley of tears. By that sword of sorrow which pierced thy Heart when thou looked upon the Face of thy dead Son, obtain for us that comfort we so sorely need in our sufferings.
Thou were given to us our Mother in the hour of thy greatest grief that thou might be mindful of our frailty and the evils that press upon us. Without thy aid, O Sorrowful Mother, we cannot gain the victory in this struggle against flesh and blood. Therefore, we seek thy help, O Queen of Sorrows, lest we fall prey to the wiles of the enemy. We are orphans in need of the guiding hand of our Mother amid the dangers that threaten our destruction. Thou whose grief was boundless as the sea, grant us by the memory of those sorrows the strength to be victorious.
Intercede further, O Mother of Sorrows, for us and all who are near and dear to us, that we may ever do the Will of thy Son, and may direct all our actions to His honor, and to the furtherance of devotion to thy sorrows. Amen.

Daily Recommendation:
Pray 1 Hail Mary for each of the 7 Sorrows Our Lady experienced. This is easy and can be done anywhere, anytime, without having to have your prayerbook with you. You just have to memorize the 7 Sorrows, and you're set! This will at least show Our Lady that you acknowledge her sorrows, and remember them in appreciation. I'm sure she will be happy with you, and shower you with her special blessings.

Some seed fell amongst thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some seed fell into rich soil and grew and produced its crop a hundredfold. His disciples asked him what this parable might mean, and he said, The mysteries of the kingdom of God are revealed to you; for the rest there are only parables, so that they may see but not perceive, listen but not understand. This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God. Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carries away the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved. Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up. As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and do not reach maturity. As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the word and take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance. |

Scripture says: God chastises every son whom he acknowledges. But the bad shepherd says: Perhaps I will be exempt. If he is exempt from the suffering of his chastisements, then he is not numbered among Gods sons. You will say: Does God indeed punish every son? Yes, every one, just as he chastised his only Son. His only Son, born of the substance of the Father, equal to the Father in the form of God, the Word through whom all things were made, he could not be chastised. For this reason he was clothed with flesh so that he might know chastisement. God punishes his only Son who is without sin; does he then leave unpunished an adopted son who is with sin? The Apostle says that we have been called to adoption. We have been adopted as sons, that we might be co-heirs with the only Son, and also that we might be his inheritance: Ask of me and I will give you the nations as your inheritance. Christ gave us the example by his own sufferings. But clearly one who is weak must neither be deceived with false hope nor broken by fear. Otherwise he may fail when temptations come. Say to him: Prepare your soul for temptation. Perhaps he is starting to falter, to tremble with fear, perhaps he is unwilling to approach. You have another passage of Scripture for him: God is faithful. He does not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Make that promise while preaching about the sufferings to come, and you will strengthen the man who is weak. When someone is held back because of excessive fear, promise him Gods mercy. It is not that temptations will be lacking, but that God will not permit anyone to be tempted beyond what he can bear. In this manner you will be binding up the broken one. When they hear of the trials that are coming, some men arm themselves more and, so to speak, are eager to drain the cup. The ordinary medicine of the faithful seems to them but a small thing; for their part they seek the glorious death of the martyrs. Others hear of the temptations to come, and when they do arrive, as arrive they must, they become broken and lame. Yet it is right that such things befall the Christian, and no one esteems them except the one who desires to be a true Christian. Offer the bandage of consolation, bind up what has been broken. Say this: Do not be afraid. God in whom you have believed does not abandon you in temptations. God is faithful. He does not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. It is not I who say this, but the Apostle, and he says further: Are you willing to accept his trial, the trial of Christ who speaks in me? When you hear this you are hearing it from Christ himself, you are hearing it from the shepherd who gives pasture to Israel. For of him it was said: You will give us tears to drink in measure. The Apostle says: He does not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. This is also what the prophet intends by adding the words: in measure. God rebukes but also encourages, he brings fear and he brings consolation, he strikes and he heals. Do not reject him. |

Faith Worth More Than Life
Luke 8: 4-15
Petition: Lord, by your Word, help me to bear abundant fruit according to your will. 1. Faith Is Not a Gift to Take for Granted A person with sight must be grateful not to be blind. A person with hearing must be grateful not to be deaf. A person with faith, likewise, must tremble with gratitude before God. If this comparison seems extreme, Christ himself has clarified: "Knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God has been granted to you; but to the rest, they are made known through parables so that they may look but not see, and hear but not understand." Therefore I ought to thank God for the very opportunity to contemplate the mysteries of my faith in order to deepen in my understanding of them. To misuse my times for prayer would betray ingratitude toward God and border on presumption. The Good Teacher has so much to teach me. He has entrusted himself to me even though not everyone has yet experienced this grace in such a personal way. Am I ready to learn? 2. Birds, Rocks, and Thorns If it had not been clear to me how any erosion to my life of prayer is a threat to my soul, Christ has clarified resoundingly. Apart from myself, there are three potentially enemies to my soul: birds, rocks, and thorns. In a world that denies sin and Satan even more, I might be tempted to think that I am safe, some immune species without a predator. Christ refers first and foremost to the danger posed by his mortal enemy, the devil. Christ wants to win my heart. My heart needs to receive his Word. Through my hardness of heart or superficiality, I can miss lifes meaning and lose the invitation to eternal salvation. Do I open and read my mail? Do I R.S.V.P. to the most important matters? Or do I throw my life to the wind to be swallowed up by the birds? 3. The Rich Harvest In Christs love and mercy toward me, he invites me to be that rich soil. I may choose to hear his Word and have it germinate in my heart. I may embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance. What habits of contemplation have I fostered in order to best receive Gods Word in my soul and have it sprout with divine life in my soul? How effective am I at turning the pleasant thought of my piety into a real-life exercise of virtue that would distinguish me as a Christian? By their fruits you will know them (Matthew 7:16). Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus, I recognize how pernicious my selfishness can be. Free me from pride, which would harden my heart and make me an easy prey for the devil. Free me from vanity, which would have me live by appearances and wither away in a shallow existence. Free me from sensuality, which would eventually deaden my spiritual life. Make of the rich soil that you desire for my soul a fertile ground for your grace. Resolution: Today I will choose to practice a particular virtue that will help me to grow in Gods grace, and in Christs presence I will review how faithfully I fulfilled this resolution before the day is over.

Saturday, September 22, 2007 Meditation Luke 8:4-15 To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God. (Luke 8:10) Who among the twelve would not feel especially privileged to know that long-hidden secrets were now being revealed to them? We, on the other hand, might respond differently. The apostles were special. Im more like the other people whom Jesus describes as those who look but dont see, and who hear but dont understand (Luke 8:10). Nothing could be further from the truth! Jesus wants to reveal the mysteries of heaven to all his children. You really are a chosen disciple, just as privileged as the apostles were! God does not measure out his love or his blessings any differently today than he did back then. Every day, he is prepared to pour wisdom and insight into your heart to help you understand the plans he has for you. Every day, he wants to convince you that they are plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope (Jeremiah 29:11). God wants to reveal himself to you, but this revelation will come only if you ask for it. This is why prayer and Scripture reading are so important. Every day, be sure you are meditating on Scripture, asking the Holy Spirit to open your mind and your heart. Use your imagination to place yourself in a scene from the gospels. Try to re-create the scene in your mind and see the situation through the eyes of one of the characters in the passage. Or maybe spend time contemplating different points from the homily you heard at Mass. Allow what you heard on Sunday to penetrate your heart as you pray or read Scripture that week. Whatever you do, try your best to keep a big perspective. Dont let the worries and concerns of the day dominate your thoughts or weigh you down. Lift your eyes to heaven. Ponder the majesty of the risen Lord, the purity and glory that surround his throne, and his plan to bring you into his presence. Let the truths of heaven fill your heart, and youll be amazed at how much more easily you will be able to work through the challenges and questions of your day-to-day life. A typical harvest of grain in the time of Jesus would be a sevenfold to eightfold yield. A hundredfold yield of grain could not possibly be attributed to the skill of the farmer or the fertility of the land. Jesus' hearers would have understood that only the sheer grace of God could produce a hundredfold harvest. Our approach to our daily reading of Scripture can resemble that of the Israelites who gathered the manna that God provided for decades in the desert (Ex 16:14ff). Many Israelites surely gathered it routinely year after year, seeing the miraculous food appear without perceiving, hearing others around them in the desert picking up their daily miracle from heaven without understanding (Lk 8:10). A normal routine of Scripture reading may not produce a hundredfold harvest, but rather the typical sevenfold or eightfold harvest that the word of God automatically produces "of itself" (see Mk 4:28). If, by our own efforts, we are truly open in our daily Scripture reading (Lk 8;15), perhaps we can jack up the harvest to thirty or sixtyfold (Mt 13:8). We encourage you to attend Mass daily, if possible, for at Holy Mass we are in the environment of miracles. Day by day, let's place ourselves thankfully in the eucharistic presence of Jesus, open our Bibles, and expectantly ask Him to open our ears (Is 50:4). God will transform us into miraculously good ground, and we will see an astounding, miraculous, hundredfold or greater harvest.One Bread, One Body

An Appeal to Defend the Faith (Continuation)

Commentary:
13-14. “Keep the commandments”: the Greek may be referring to one specific
commandment (as the RSV reflects); but it can also mean law as a whole and,
more likely, the truths of Revelation, that is, the deposit of the faith professed
at Baptism.
St Paul very formally calls in, as witnesses to this instruction, God the Father
and Christ Jesus, “who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good
confession”. Jesus’ “testimony” includes his entire passion and the declaration
he made to the Roman procurator about messianic kingship and his true identity
(cf. Jn 18:36-37).
“Until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ”: when referring to the second
coming of Christ the New Testament often uses the term “parousia” (cf. 1 Cor
15:23; 2 Pet 3:4) or “revealing” (cf., e.g., 1 Cor 1:7); the Pastoral Epistles prefer
“appearing”, epiphany, manifestation (cf. 2 Tim 4:1, 8; Tit 2:13), which better
reflect the coming of Christ in glory as Savior (cf. 2 Tim 1:10). There is, of course,
a wonderful continuity between the redemptive work of Christ, the action of the
Church in conserving Revelation and passing it on, and the final coming of Christ
at the end of time.
15-16. This doxology or hymn of praise, one of the richest and most beautiful in
the New Testament, may have been taken from the Church’s liturgy (which may
also be the case with the other hymns in this letter: cf. 1:17 and 3:15 -16). It was
possibly a reply to pagan hymns honoring rulers and emperors as gods. However,
it is more likely that this particular hymn was inspired by the Old Testament,
which speaks of God in similar language. Whatever its origin, the important thing
about the hymn is that it expresses faith in God who merits all praise.
At a time known only to him (cf. Mt 24:36), God the Father will bring about the
glorious manifestation of Jesus Christ. The text refers to four attributes which
show the power and sublimity of God: he is the “only Sovereign”, from whom all
lawful rulers on earth receive their authority (cf. Jn 19:11). He is the “King of kings
and Lord of lords” (literally, “the King of those who reign and the Lord of those who
wield lordship”); this is not, then, a merely honorific title: he does actually exercise
sovereignty over those who claim to possess it (cf. Rev 17:14; 19:16). He is
“immortal”, for immortality is proper to God, who is Life (cf. Jn 1:4); angels and
souls are immortal only by virtue of the nature given them by God. Finally, he is
“light” and brightness: these are attributed to God (cf. Ps 104:2) to show his
sublimity: God transcends all created things and cannot be fully comprehended
by man. St Thomas explains that an object can be invisible on two counts either
because it lacks brightness, as occurs with things which are dark and opaque,
or because it is too bright, as occurs in the case of the sun, which is so bright
that the human eye cannot look at it; God is so far beyond the capacity of the
human mind that man cannot entirely take him in even though what we can learn
about him by the right use of reason and through revelation is true and accurate
(cf. “Commentary on 1 Tim, ad loc.”). The conclusion of the hymn, which is
liturgical and pedagogical in style, is similar to that found in 1:17: there it says
“honor and glory”, here “heaven and eternal dominion”, putting more stress on
God’s sovereignty.
This and the other hymns which appear in the letter show that the first Christians
were fully aware that man’s true purpose in life is to give glory to God. “We do not
live for the world, or for our own honor, but for the honor of God, for the glory of
God, for the service of God. That is what should motivate us!” ([St] J. Escriva,
“The Forge”, 851).

Parable of the Sower. The Meaning of the Parables
[9] And when His disciples asked Him what this parable meant, [10]

of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may
not see, and hearing they may not understand. [11] Now the parable
is this: The seed is the word of God. [12] The ones along the path are
those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word
from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. [13] And the
ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it
with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time
of temptation fall away. [14] And as for what fell among the thorns,
they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked
by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not
mature. [15] And as for that in the good soil, they are those who,
hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring
forth fruit with patience.”

Commentary:
4-8. Our Lord explains this parable in verses 11-15. The seed is Jesus
Himself and His preaching; and the different kinds of ground it falls on
reflect people’s different attitudes to Jesus and His teaching. Our Lord
sows the life of grace in souls through the preaching of the Church and
through an endless flow of actual graces.
10-12. Jesus uses parables to teach people the mysteries of the
supernatural life and thereby lead them to salvation. However, He
foresaw that, due to the bad dispositions of some of His listeners,
these parables would lead them to harden their hearts and to reject
grace. For a fuller explanation of the purpose of parables see the
notes on Matthew 13:10-13 and Mark 4:11-12.
12. Some people are so immersed in a life of sin that they are the
patch on which falls the seed “which suffers from two kinds of hazard:
it is trodden on by wayfarers and snatched by birds. The path, there-
fore, is the heart, which is trodden on by the frequent traffic of evil
thoughts, and cannot take in the seed and let it germinate because
it is so dried up” (St. Bede, “In Lucae Evangelium Expositio, in loc.”).
Souls hardened by sin can become good soil and bear fruit through
sincere repentance and penance. We should note the effort the devil
makes to prevent souls from being converted.
13. “Many people are pleased by what they hear, and they resolve to
do good; but as soon as they experience difficulties they give up the
good words they started. Stony ground has not enough soil, which is
why the shoots fail to produce fruit. There are many who, when they
hear greed criticized, do conceive a loathing for it and extol the scor-
ning of it; but as soon as the soul sees something else that it desires,
it forgets what it previously promised. There are also others who when
they hear talk against impurity not only desire not to be stained by the
filth of the flesh but are even ashamed of the stains that they already
bear; but as soon as bodily beauty presents itself to their eyes, their
heart is so drawn by desires that it is as if they had done or decided to
do nothing against these desires, and they act in a manner deserving
condemnation and in a way which they themselves previously con-
demned when they reflected on their behavior. Very often we feel com-
punction for our faults and yet we go back and commit them even after
bemoaning them” (St. Gregory the Great, “In Evangelia Homiliae”, 15).
14. This is the case of people who after receiving the divine seed, the
Christian calling, and having stayed on the right path for some time,
begin to give up the struggle. These souls run the risk of developing a
istaste for the things of God and of taking the easy, and wrong, way
of seeking compensations suggested to them by their disordered
ambition for power and their desire for material wealth and a comfor-
table life involving no suffering.
A person in this situation begins to be lukewarm and tries to serve two
masters: “It is wrong to have two candles lighted—one to St. Michael
and another to the devil. We must snuff out the devil’s candle; we
must spend our lives completely in the service of the Lord. If our desire
for holiness is sincere, if we are docile enough to place ourselves in
God’s hands, everything will go well. For He is always ready to give
us His grace” ([St] J. Escriva, “Christ Is Passing By”, 59).
15. Jesus tells us that the good soil has three features—listening to
God’s demands with the good disposition of a generous heart; striving
to ensure that one does not water down these demands as time goes
by; and, finally, beginning and beginning again and not being dishear-
tened if the fruit is slow to appear. “You cannot `rise’. It’s not
surprising:
that fall!
“Persevere and you will `rise’. Remember what a spiritual writer has
said: your poor soul is like a bird whose wings are caked with mud.
“Suns of heaven are needed and personal efforts, small and constant,
to shake off those inclinations, those vain fancies, that depression:
that mud clinging to your wings.
“And you will see yourself free. If you persevere, you will `rise’” ([St] J.
Escriva, “The Way”, 991).
