Finding Truth in the “Would Not Vote for a Mormon” Polls
RomneyExperience.com ^ | 7/26/07

Posted on 07/26/2007 5:03:33 PM PDT by tantiboh

Democratic political consultant Mark Mellman has a very good piece up today at The Hill on the baffling and illegitimate opposition among voters to Mitt Romney due to his religion. I liked his closing paragraphs:

In July of 1958, 24 percent of respondents told Gallup they would not vote for a Catholic for president, almost identical to Gallup’s reading on Mormons today. Two years later, John F. Kennedy became the first Catholic to assume the oath of office. Within eight months, the number refusing to vote for a Catholic was cut almost in half.

[snip]

Mellman also discusses an interesting poll he helped construct, in which the pollsters asked half of their respondents whether they would support a candidate with certain characteristics, and asked the other half about another candidate with the exact same characteristics, with one difference. The first candidate was Baptist, the second candidate was Mormon. The Baptist had a huge advantage over the Mormon candidate, by about 20 points.

[snip]

However, more recent polls have attempted to fix the anonymity problem. A recent Time Magazine poll (read the original report here), for example, got to the heart of the question by asking respondents if they are less likely to vote for Mitt Romney specifically because he is a Mormon. The result is not as bad as some reporting on the poll has suggested. For example, while 30% of Republicans say they are less likely to vote for Romney because of his religion, fully 15% of other Republicans say that characteristic makes them more likely to vote for him. And while many have reported the finding that 23% of Republicans are “worried” by Romney’s Mormonism, the more important (but less-reported) number is that 73% say they hold no such reservations...

Is it always your way to think you are intellectual when others are not?

I too, have been tarred with the same brush...perhaps we should form a club? The "Flying Inman Unintellectual" or Phius (as in phooey to you) for short. We could have secret and sacred passwords and handshakes and all kinds of neat stuff.

You started the silliness. Please do due respect. I do not hate Mormons, I love them; they’re my family. If you are who you say you are, please show the same respect without all the cut and paste missionary work.

I have left the church. Please leave it at that.

“I’m sorry that I wasn’t clearer in my post. It came off as personal to you. My bad. I apologize.”

I didn’t really take it personally, so no apology is necessary. My truth is apparently not the same as yours. I can’t stretch mine to cover you, and you can’t stretch yours to cover me. Best case, we agree to disagree. Anyone tries forced conversion, I expect things to get a little hot for a bit, and then again later for quite a long time, for whoever was in the wrong.

My argument, for what it’s worth, is that what you are ready to recieve may not be the same as what I’m ready to recieve. You may feel I’m wrong (and I definitely feel you’re wrong) but I’m not trying to make you feel you MUST accept my testimony. I’m just offering it for you to check out. I’ve already checked yours out, essentially. I rejected it from my step-father, and from everyone else who feels the same way. I’ll even give you points for trying to help someone you feel is in danger.

Restornu, don’t sweat it, he’s trying to keep me out of trouble so we can continue the discussion, so far as I can tell. I take it at that face value, anyway.

~”Is it always your way to think you are intellectual when others are not?”~

No, but people often think that of me once they get to know me.

Honestly, CC, I enjoy the crafting of words, so I write and speak in full and complex language. That comes off badly to some people, who take it as some kind of superiorism. I learned a long time ago that I really didn’t care. Prose is one of the few things at which I excel, and I fully intend to use it as well as I can, whether or not it makes others uncomfortable.

Just remember that behind the well-crafted paragraphs and wordy phrases, there’s just a guy in his 20’s sitting at a keyboard (in various states of undress) looking for a little bit of knowledge. If I demand intellectualism from others, it’s typically because I’m trying to learn from them.

What I’ve no patience for is when a person is purposefully intellectually lazy. Such a person is fairly rare, but he or she sticks out like a pimple on a pickle, and I have no interest in engaging in that kind of conversation. There’s just nothing to be learned.

Feel free to ignore me if my outlook continues to grate on you; but I’ve no intention of changing my behavior.

I am sorry if it seem like missionary work and you should be aware that it would be impossible for any real missionary to happen on an open forum full of contention the Holy Spirit is nowhere to be found.

I guess the line seem blurred when one is trying to defend some things that one said.

Even though my efforts might seem like that to you, I am clueless how you expect me not to respond.

How I can do what I feel is right on my end and not get into those areas, when other side is busy painting a different picture.

Because of this both sides are launch in a teeter tauter mode
