Democratic political consultant Mark Mellman has a very good piece up today at The Hill on the baffling and illegitimate opposition among voters to Mitt Romney due to his religion. I liked his closing paragraphs:
In July of 1958, 24 percent of respondents told Gallup they would not vote for a Catholic for president, almost identical to Gallup’s reading on Mormons today. Two years later, John F. Kennedy became the first Catholic to assume the oath of office. Within eight months, the number refusing to vote for a Catholic was cut almost in half.

Mellman also discusses an interesting poll he helped construct, in which the pollsters asked half of their respondents whether they would support a candidate with certain characteristics, and asked the other half about another candidate with the exact same characteristics, with one difference. The first candidate was Baptist, the second candidate was Mormon. The Baptist had a huge advantage over the Mormon candidate, by about 20 points.

However, more recent polls have attempted to fix the anonymity problem. A recent Time Magazine poll (read the original report here), for example, got to the heart of the question by asking respondents if they are less likely to vote for Mitt Romney specifically because he is a Mormon. The result is not as bad as some reporting on the poll has suggested. For example, while 30% of Republicans say they are less likely to vote for Romney because of his religion, fully 15% of other Republicans say that characteristic makes them more likely to vote for him. And while many have reported the finding that 23% of Republicans are “worried” by Romney’s Mormonism, the more important (but less-reported) number is that 73% say they hold no such reservations...

This also probably tells you that despite tens of millions
and maybe hundreds of millions of dollars spent by the
mormon church on PR to polish their image, a pretty solid
40-50% aren’t buying it.

atheists as candidates even more than mormons!

have rights covering all that.

This would also mean that wealthy Canadians could continue to purchase condos in Miami just like wealthy Mexicans.

You can take a chill pill, too, FRiend. My blood pressure is fine. If you didn’t mean it, why did you say Mormons claimed to discover the Salt Lake? Something you were thinking not make it through to the keyboard? If so, I’ll forgive you, having had moments like that myself.
Did look at your about page, and I’d be interested in one of those McNamara bricks, if you still have some to spare. Being LDS, I don’t drink beer, but I’m sure I could find something to splatter on one. I used to crew F-111D’s at Cannon AFB. The F-111 was also known as McNamara’s Folly.

If you’ve read what else I’ve posted here, you will know that on my list of candidates, Romney is above Clinton, but not by all that much. I’m looking for facts that will help me make a definate decision as to where he should be on the list. Having changed my own opinions on, for example, abortion, having something showing quotations in chronological order would be useful to me. Becoming Pro-Life in the past couple of years would be, imho, a serious red flag. A decade ago? Not so bad. My son is 15, and his birth had much to do with my change in attitude. There are very few children in the world as wanted as he is. (That is not saying there aren’t a whole bunch of them who are very much wanted, either.) I also favor the joke that asks how you can tell if a politician is lying, too.

Hey, now, it’s the new century; guys can compliment other guys’ looks without risking aspersions about their own proclivities.

I used to. Problem is, he’s got both style and substance. Well, we’re so used to Clinton, I think, that we’re wary of style.
But I started listening to what he was saying, and I gotta say, most of it’s right up my alley. He’s made a few missteps, and has pandered some. He’s been smacked in the face by it, though, and one thing Romney has going for him is that he’s a quick study.
Of course, you’ll never find a candidate that agrees with you in everything; but Romney comes close for me.
What I find hilarious is that many of the same people who criticize Romney for being “too slick” turn around and criticism him for his faux pas on, for example, being a lifelong varmint hunter, or other such missteps.
