My Glossary of Terms Mentioned in Article:

Venti Settembre: a reference to the city of Rome's capture, which completed the unification of the Italian peninusla.

"protonotaries apostolic:" Protonotary apostolic

"chamberlain:" Camerlengo

"dean of the Rota:" Sacra Rota Romana

"falda:" a type of vestment that trails behind the Pope

Et homo factus est: a line from the Nicene Creed - "and became man."

oblata: the gifts of bread and wine

Pater noster: The Our Father

fistula: a pipe or reed through which the Precious Blood was taken. Basically, it is a straw.

sancta: "holy," referring to the Particle of consecrated Host that is dropped into the Precious Blood before the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is sung.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum: "The Peace of Our Lord be with you always," which the priest/bishop/Pope offering Mass says as makes the Sign of the Cross three times over the Chalice before he places the Particle in the chalice.

pax: "peace," referring to the sign of peace given between the priest/bishop/Pope offering Mass and the deacon as the Agnus Dei is sung.

Panem coelestem: The name of the prayer translated as "I will take the bread of heaven and call upon the name of the Lord," which the priest/bishop/Pope offering the Mass says before making his Communion.

Domine non sum dignus: "Lord I am not worthy" - a prayer the priest/bishop/Pope offering the Mass says three times before making his Communion, immediately after the Panem coelestem.

Catholic ping!

Since NYer speculated at a possible papal Tridentine Mass following the release of the Motu Proprio, I thought it would be interesting to read about how a Solemn Papal Mass used to entail. As the article notes, the Pope didn't always celebrate Mass this way.

We say the “Domine non sum dignus” three times before making our communion. We say it in the classic form, but in English, not Latin.

What’s up with the bread and wine tasters? That’s machiavellian. Who would poison the Precious Body & Blood. Oh, never mind. Maybe they ought to bring that back.

It makes me realize that the history of the Papal States is largely blacked out. What is the 20th of September? Why did they not sacrifice the mass for 11 years? Why and for how long was the Pope not allowed to leave the Vatican? You won’t see that on the History Channel.
