Translation from Kath.net via "The Cafeteria is Closed":

My Austrian friends just emailed me. Kath.net/Die Welt (Klaus Badde) report (my translation:) that the motu proprio liberating the Tridentine Mass for the entire Catholic Church has been given to about 30 bishops from all over the world in the Sala Bologna of the Apostolic Palace by Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone. The bishops had been invited to Rome for that purpose.

At the end of the meeting, in which the motu proprio was introduced together with a letter of explanation by Pope Benedict XVI., Pope Benedict met with the bishops. The document is about three pages long, the accompanying letter about four. From Germany, Cardinal Lehmann had been invited. The circumstances of the procedure make clear that the Pope was very interested to personally inform the bishops, in collegial manner, of the content rather than have them learn about it from the media.

The publication of both documents will take place on July 7th. It emphasizes the unity of the Roman Rite which will consist of an ordinary and an extraordinary form which are supposed to inspire each other. The ordinary/regular form will continue to be the new rite of 1969. The extraordinary form will be the Missal of Bl. John XXIII. of 1962.

It’s “been coming” for the last year.

I’m starting to wonder if these guys have heard of the story “The Boy that Cried Wolf”.

Yes, it has "been coming" for an inordinate amount of time. The difference however between this latest development is that there are actually specifics: length of the document, who distributed the document to whom, and a specific reason why it was distributed in this manner.

Besides, Fr. Z has been extremely careful about what he is reporting. Within the last week or so, he has been given credible reports about the document passing through the Office of Latin Letters, and to the printer; from living in Rome, he has connections to people who actually work in these various offices.

Is this from the Onion?
Please, I’ve been disappointed too often. And I’m not even a TLM attendee.

The bigger question is not when by who will be offering it once it is released. How many US priests speak Latin and know the liturgical movements for the TLM? Our diocese has one Church with the Indult and a sparse attendance. Most of the priests in this diocese do not speak Latin and were educated in 'Resurrection' theology. It will take another decade or so before we see any interest, if at all, in the TLM. Most Catholics here have been strongly indoctrinated into the NO liturgy ... and like it.

Catholic World News, today

Motu proprio coming July 7

Vatican, Jun. 27, 2007 (Kath.net/CWNews.com) - The long-awaited motu proprio in which Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) liberalizes access to the traditional Latin Mass will be released on July 7, according to the German-language Kath.net news service.

Kath.net reports that Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (bio - news), the Vatican Secretary of State, introduced the text of the motu proprio to a group of 30 bishops at the Vatican on June 27. Pope Benedict made a brief appearance at the meeting, the Kath.net story indicates.

The June 27 meeting drew bishops from all around the world, who had been invited to the Vatican for an advance briefing on the papal document. Pope Benedict has taken special pains to ensure that the world’s bishops are well prepared for the motu proprio, hoping to minimize opposition to the move.

Most Catholics here have been strongly indoctrinated into the NO liturgy ... and like it.

That's a point that I hear a lot. Many (most?) practicing Catholics love all of the hugging, hand-holding, Protestant hymns, etc. And that may be true. However, since Mass attendance has fallen dramatically since 1970, it's pretty obvious that not everyone loves the new Mass. Same goes for priests. I frequently hear that the current generation of priests generally loves Vatican II and everything associated with it. Again, it may be true, but what about all of the priests who have quit? And why are there so few new priests? It's not exactly like the Novus Ordo is inspiring many vocations.
