Father Frank led us many years ago and somehow I remember someone sent us a large donation of these books and we sent them out free for anyone who wanted to follow along. We sent many out but most of St. Louis de Montfort’s books are online now so it is easy.I will get you the link when I have time for the other books.

A small group of us at my parish did the “Total Consecration” program. First, I advise strongly doing it with a friend or in a group.

Second, understand that Saint Montfort’s book, “True Devotion to Mary” is the background and basis for the program, which is actually simplified in a very easy to follow format, where you start on certain dates, in a slim book entitled, “Preparation for Total Consecration, according to Saint Louis Marie de Montfort”. The first book can be read before, on in conjunction with, making your consecration program.

Both of these wonderful and inspiring books have long been available from Montfort Publications in Bay Shore, NY. I don’t know if the free “packet” advocated by these “Making Friends” people are the same materials. It sounds like they have a great thing going, but I will just say we used the Montfort materials and they are perfectly suited to easy learning in a systematic way, very organized, etc.

The program involves prayers every day, and each week they change. The 33-day program is comprised of 12 preliminary days, and then three separate weeks of different foci each. Our group prayed and read individually all week, and then met one day weekly to pray all together and discuss our progress. (I believe it’s a bonus if you can manage to do this before the Blessed Sacrament weekly.) Like any new endeavor, don’t get discouraged if you start off gung-ho and then feel lazy at times or miss a few prayers. At times it seems like ALOT of prayers, but once you start saying them, they are beautiful and really only take a few minutes.

It also helps to have a leader who has read the Montfort book and can sort of guide folks. Some people who may not be familiar with spiritual writings, especially those of a style from previous centuries, may be a bit overwhelmed by the poetic style of Montfort. Also, some of the language (”slaves of Christ” means devotion; “Do violence to yourself” means asceticism and mental discipline, not self-flagellation) seems stilted to 21st century ears because the words have since acquired new meanings. Just don’t get hung up on technicalities like that, and instead see the deeper meaning.

This is probably one of the most meaningful practices one can do, in terms of it gradually developing your prayer life, and also growing in love and appreciation of Christ and Mary. Also, unlike some contemporary programs, it’s not geared up to give you an emotional high. Instead you gradually learn and it stays with you for life.

Well, I could go on, but have probably said more than enough. Salvation, I would be interested in doing it with you, but not sure how we could work that out “online”?

Seeing all the interest, I’m just going to briefly outline here the 33-day program for “Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary, According to the St. Louis Marie de Montfort”:

The next cycle begins July 13 and ends on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption. (You always begin 33 days before a Marian feast so you can finish on the feast day. If done at a Parish, the priest could have a little Consecration Ceremony after Mass on that day.)

PART ONE - 12 Preliminary Days
Theme: “Spirit of the World”

Prayers are said daily, such as ‘Veni Creator’, ‘Ave Maris Stella’ and ‘Magnificat’.
Each day has a very short scripture reading (included in the book, as are the prayers) OR a little lesson by Saint Louis de Montfort (excerpted from his “True Devotion”).
You can do PART ONE in about 10 minutes per day and it’s quite simple.

PART TWO - Theme: KNOWLEDGE OF SELF”

Now we have a different set of prayers to say for the next week. These include two Litanies, ‘Holy Ghost’ and ‘Loreto’, two very old traditional ways of praying, and a few other short prayers. (If litanies are new to you, just go for it, they look boring, but as soon as you start it’s like a musical chant.)

Again, each day is clearly marked with it’s own Scripture passage or mini-lesson. During PART TWO, 15-20 minutes daily is probably needed for fully reading and praying.

PART THREE - Theme: “KNOWLEDGE of MARY”

A ROSARY is added to the prayers. This will increase the time you devote daily by about 10 minutes. Maybe plan on spending 1/2 an hour on your consecration time. It could be longer if you really start pondering the daily readings, but need not be. The readings this week give interesting ways of looking at spiritual life by contemplating aspects of Mary and also develops further the meaning of devotion to her Son.

PART FOUR - Theme: “KNOWLEDGE of JESUS” (final week)

The Rosary is not required in this week’s prayers, but maybe you have now developed the habit?!? The prayers vary again, and we discover the beautiful ‘Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus.’
Again, each day has a small lesson, approximately half a page, by St. Montfort; these focus on aspects of Christ’s life and passion, and the Eucharist.
30 minutes daily is a reasonable expectation to spend.

CONSECRATION:
This is a formal declaration between you and Jesus. A one-page description advises preparing for it by going to Confession, Communion, doing some simple penance, etc. The Consecration Prayer is specific, and the booklet has a space to sign and date your name when you make it.

The Confraternity of Mary, now called ‘The Association of Mary Queen of All Hearts,’ is the organization that oversees this process and materials, and there are specific Guidelines and Spiritual Commitments for members. I believe once you make your Consecration, you can formally enroll your name with this organization.

“We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God!”

My father would have so loved this thread, Salvation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting such a beautiful thread. Let me know when you are going to do the De Montfort consecration, and I will renew mine at the same time and pray for you. If I remember you have a good priest, and that is so very important. I pray he’ll take up the banner!

**My father would have so loved this thread**

Yes, he would. After all, he was the originator of the Catholic Caucus title. God bless him.

May his soul and all of the souls departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

We will let you know. And, yes, I do have a good priest and I will take it to him when I get my materials. So far, no response from their website.

I ordered my materials and will join you on July 13. I’ve just moved and don’t know anyone here yet, so I’ll be doing it on my own (but will have the group here, so not totally alone!).
