Catholic views on Self Defense

Posted on 04/24/2007 10:19:02 AM PDT by oremus79

Where do we as Catholics stand today on one's right to defend one's self against an unjust aggressor? Has this view changed from what it may have once been? Do you feel that the teaching of the church regarding self defense has changed? I believe the answer among the majority of Catholics would be yes.

How about Gun ownership. We know where Rome stands. Where do we stand regarding this. Will we lay down and allow the terrorist and criminals(same people)to massacre us? Christ told his apostles in the Gospel according to St. Luke 22:36, "He said to them,"But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise a bag. And let him who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one."

How can anyone in good conscience interpret that away. I am afraid of the consequences if one says that he didn't mean it. We can't do like our protestant brethren who pick and choose what they wish to believe.

Oh really? Where does "Rome" stand, exactly?

If you have discovered some “teaching” that contradicts the Catechism, that would be a nice foundation for your thread.

2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one’s own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:

Ditch the logical fallacies and ask again.

Sorry, not gonna happen. Have you ever hear of the first amendment to the constitution. I’m not threatening anyone, I’m not inciting a riot. I made a statement and if you have a problem with it, I’m sorry. The problem is solely yours to deal with and I’m not apologizing for having posted it. I refuse to censor myself because it might offend a few who are blind to the truth.

An inflammatory remark on an open thread in the Religion Forum is tolerable - but never on a closed thread: devotionals, prayer threads and caucuses.

oremus79, be sure to read the guidelines for posting on the Religion Forum.

I have the St. Gabriel Possenti Society link on my homepage. Seems like a great group. I wish people would open there eyes to the facts. If they really want a huge increase in violent crime they will continue to fight for gun control. That is the only outcome of Gun Control.

My bad. When I said an inflammatory remark is tolerable on an open thread - I did not mean an inflammatory remark directed towards another Freeper. The primary guideline remains:

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

Love for neighbor means defending that neighbor as well.

Love for neighbor means defending that neighbor as well.

Yes. it does.

2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm.

Who then is my neighbor? (Who is responsible for the lives of those around them?)

Looking back at your post #13, I think you've answered that question.

But you do anyway...However, I agree...Most Protestants don't believe the bible any more than Catholics do...
