You may recall that Raymond Arroyo invited Fr. Neuhaus to assist him during the Conclave, following the death of JPII. He provided some excellent commentary. When Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger walked stepped out from behind the curtains on the balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square, Fr. Neuhaus commented:

"With the election of Pope Benedict XVI, the curtain has fallen on the long-running drama of the myth of "the spirit of Vatican II," in which the revolution mandated by the Council was delayed by the timidity of Paul VI and temporarily derailed for twenty-plus years by the regressive John Paul II, as the Church inexorably moved toward the happy denouement of "the next pope" who would resume the course of progressive accommodation to the wisdom of the modern world. The curtain has fallen and the audience has long since left, except for a few diehards who say they are giving the new management a hundred days to revive the show. Some of them are perhaps thinking of going to another theater. There are worse things than not being a Catholic--when it is made unmistakably clear that being a Catholic is not what one is."

A classic!

"great article. Fr. Neuhaus is all class."

I called him once on the telephone. He didn't seem to be as aggravated by modernism as I am.

First Things is TERRIBLE!

Here's how: Whatever I'm doing, when it comes I have to stop what I'm doing and read as much of it as I can.

I would think any thoughtful Xtian Freeper would want to subscribe to this mag. It's always interesting.

I really need to order that DVD of the coverage from EWTN. As I have often said, the appearance of Pope Benedict on the balcony cemented my desire to join the Church. Father Neuhaus's commentary, along with Raynomd Arroyo, was simply excellent.

What was really amusing was watching the coverage on EWTN, then switching to CNN for a few minutes. The CNN people were flabbergasted that RATZINGER had been elected! They had convinced themselves that some liberal, PC type was going to be the choice and pretty soon the Church would "modernize." It really was pretty funny.

ROFL! Thank you! for posting this. I have always been a "news" junkie. Three years ago, I gave up watching the news for Lent. The transformation was immediate. I have never looked back. Since then, I have focused my energies on praying the Maronite Divine Office, reading Scripture and assisting my Maronite Catholic parish. That decision has drawn me into a more focused attention to my faith.

The mainstream media have NEVER understood Religion, much less how Pope's are chosen. Who will ever forget the moment Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger's name was announced from the balcony!

Once the msm is eliminated, it is so much easier to see the full picture. And THAT was delivered via EWTN with Raymond Arroyo and his guests, especially Fr. John Neuhaus. Frankly, it bothers me to have to pay $50/month for cable but is worth EVERY PENNY to have access to EWTN.

Having EWTN is a blessing. Sunday nights we watch Fulton Sheen, Father Groeschel, and Father Corapi. It makes a nice end to the weekend, and we learn a great deal.

Thanks for the ping, a truly wonderful piece.

Interesting that Father Neuhaus refers so often to Saint Augustine. Augustine is my favorite Doctor, never leaving me in the dust of my own foolish sin, but always accessible, clear, and direct. Patient and prudent.

A few elements amongst Father Neuhaus' riches that speak to me:

"Ideas that are not held accountable to "the Church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Timothy 3:15) will in time become the enemy of that truth."

"...all the saving and sanctifying grace to be found outside the boundaries of the Catholic Church gravitates toward the perfection of that imperfect communion." (Certainly on an individual level. Happened to me.)

"But the Church has known many times (other than the present) that were harder, much harder; she has learned that the better part of fidelity is sometimes simply persistent waiting upon the movement of the Holy Spirit toward possibilities that she can neither anticipate nor control, but for which we must together pray."

"Nothing that is good is rejected, all is fulfilled."

Father Neuhaus' statements are not opinion, not his, not mine. They are the truth. Facts. As Solzhenitsyn put it, "Do not live lies."

Seek the truth at whatever cost and you will find it. It really is as easy as knocking on the door. Just ask. (Man, I do that whole job really poorly, you know?)

Pretty amazing getting unhooked from the avalanche of propaganda, eh?

One is reminded of the vulgar saying, that we are "Treated like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed s...."

Levity aside, we live in a tsunami of propaganda, of foul sewage. Heaven help us. Sola Gratia indeed, most surely.

Ditto! And that is from a "cradle" Catholic :-). As a child, I still remember my grandmother insisting that we kids sit quietly in front of the tv and watch Bishop Sheen. What a master! He is the first televangelist and set the guidelines on how faith should be delivered via this media. We had Jewish neighbors who also watched and admired the good bishop. My grandmother was devastated when Sheen was not elevated to the rank of Cardinal (God rest her soul!). Me too!

Thank you for that comment! After posting the Early Church Fathers and now the Catholic Converts, I plan to post a series of threads on the Doctors of the Church. Look for these to appear after Easter.

"Knock and it shall be opened unto you"

And ... He means it :-)
