Funny moment.

Each candidate during the ordination ceremony is called upon and they must answer "Present" to show they are ready to fufill their calling. During this one of the candidates got up, but they took the mike away too quickly and it made it seem as if he declined to answer at the time...a bunch of us looked around like "Did he just not say "present?" Didn't expect to see this!" of course we come to find later that it was the fact that the mike was taken away. All of the brothers had quite a laugh over it...ridiculing him for a couple of days after the fact.

He was totally embarrased of course.

Poor man! I feel for him - once I had to say a few words in a foreign language to a huge group of speakers of that language and I did it very well. Then people in the back started yelling that the mike wasn't on. So I had to redo it, and for some reason redoing it gave me one of the most massive attacks of stage fright I have ever had and I could barely gasp out a word of my formerly fluent speech.

But one recovers...

I had the privilege to be present at the diaconal ordination of those young Legionaries last Summer (Saturday before Pentecost Sunday) at St Paul's Outside the Walls, so I can imagine how you felt at the priestly ordination.

One of the unexpected highlights of the Mass that day was the Legionary community (must have been several hundred), joined by the rest of us 4,000 or so laity, singing hymns during the (lengthy) laying on of hands by the bishop. When we came to that old Fanny Havergal standby "Take My Life and Let it Be Consecrated, Lord to Thee" there may not have been a dry eye in the house. It was an indescribably powerful moment.

Another highlight of the trip occurred the next day in St Peter's Square as we waited for the Mass of Pentecost with the Holy Father. A Legionary priest came up to our little group as we sat waiting, and when asked about the meaning of Pentecost, he preached a 10 or 15 minute reflection to us right there in the square, amidst the thousands. It was very profound and also quite a moment.

Finally, be sure to order a copy of Fr. Thomas Williams, LC's new book: "Spiritual Progress: Becoming the Christian You Want to Be". We met him, too, during that pilgrimage, and he is really, really good. The book should be great.
