1 Jn 2:12-17

I am writing to you, children,
because your sins have been forgiven for his name’s sake.

I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.

because you have conquered the Evil One.

because you know the Father.

I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.

I write to you, young men,
because you are strong and the word of God remains in you,
and you have conquered the Evil One.

Do not love the world or the things of the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world,
sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life,
is not from the Father but is from the world.
Yet the world and its enticement are passing away.
But whoever does the will of God remains forever.

Gospel
Lk 2:36-40

There was a prophetess, Anna,
the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.
She was advanced in years,
having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,
and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.
She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.
And coming forward at that very time,
she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child
to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
of the law of the Lord,
they returned to Galilee,
to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him.

December Devotion: The Immaculate Conception

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of December is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first moment of her conception, by a singular privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, our Savior and hers, was preserved from all stain of original sin. This age-old belief of the Church was defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854 as an article of revealed truth.

Mary was in need of redemption and she was indeed f redeemed by the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ. The manner of Mary's redemption, however, was unique. Instead of being freed from original sin after having contracted it, she was preserved from contracting it. This was a most fitting favor for the Mother of the Redeemer.

INVOCATION
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

TO THE VIRGIN IMMACULATE
O Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God and my Mother, from thy sublime height turn upon me thine eyes of pity. Filled with confidence in thy goodness and knowing full well thy power, I beseech thee to extend to. me thine assistance in the journey of life, which is so full of dangers for my soul. And in order that I may never be the slave of the devil through sin, , but may ever live with my heart humble and pure, I entrust myself wholly to thee. I consecrate my heart to thee for ever, my only desire being to love thy divine Son Jesus. Mary, none of thy devout servants has ever perished; may I too be saved. Amen.

PRAYER OF PRAISE
O pure and immaculate and likewise blessed Virgin, who art the sinless Mother of thy Son, the mighty Lord of the universe, thou who art inviolate and altogether holy, the hope of the hopeless and sinful, we sing thy praises. We bless thee, as full of every grace, thou who didst bear the God-Man: we all bow low before thee; we invoke thee and implore thine aid. Rescue us, 0 holy and inviolate Virgin, from every necessity that presses upon us and from all the temptations of the devil. Be our intercessor and advocate at the hour of death and judgment; deliver us from the fire that is not extinguished and from the outer darkness; make us worthy of the glory of thy Son, O dearest and most clement Virgin Mother. Thou indeed art our only hope, most sure and sacred in God's sight, to whom be honor and glory, majesty and dominion for ever and ever world without end. Amen.

PRAYER OF POPE PIUS XII
This prayer, dedicated to Mary Immaculate, was composed by the Pope for the Marian Year (December 8, 1953-December 8, 1954), which was proclaimed to mark the centenary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, 0 Immacuate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.

Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.

O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! 0 Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!

O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. The Apostle's Confidence in the Faithful



[12] I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven
for his sake. [13] I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him

know the Father. [14] I write to you, fathers, because you know him

strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the

Detachment from the World


[15] Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the
world, love for the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world,
the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not
of the Father but is of the world. [17] And the world passes away, and
the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever.



Commentary:

12-14. These verses, which are a kind of aside, are not easy to trans-
late. The main difficulty has to do with the meaning of the expression,
"I am writing (or I insist) because". The Greek conjunction may have
an explanatory meaning (as the New Vulgate translates it): "I am
writing to you that your sins have been forgiven..."; in which case the
Apostle would be trying to build up the Christians' resistance to the
arguments of the heretics; as if he were saying "You can be sure
that your sins have been forgiven...", that is, that it is you not they,
who are Christians.

However, it is also correct in the context to understand it as being
the causal. In this way the Apostle is invoking his authority over these
Christians, confident that they will listen to him; it is as if he were sa-
ying, "I can tell you, and you have the duty and the right to pay heed
to me, because your sins have been forgiven...".

The way he addresses his readers, calling them little children, child-
ren, fathers, young men, is also open to various interpretations. The
first two (little children, children) are usually taken to mean all Chris-
tians, without distinction of age or the length of time they have been
in the Church; whereas the other two (fathers, young men) would be
addressed to those particular groups. However, it is possible that
these are simply rhetorical devices, in which case what is said to
young people is perfectly applicable to older people, and vice versa;
this is the way St Augustine understood it: "Remember that you are
fathers; if you forget Him who is from the beginning, you will have lost
your paternity. Also see yourselves over and over again as young men:
strive to win; win so as to be crowned; be humble in order not to suc-
cumb in the struggle" ("In Epist. Joann. Ad Parthos", 2, 7).

"Because you know him who is from the beginning": a reference to
Jesus Christ, as distinct from the Father, who appears at the start of v.
14. St John puts emphasis on knowing, which covers not just theoreti-
cal knowledge but more particularly a knowledge that comes from faith
and love (cf. note on 2: 3-6).

13. "The evil one": the devil is explicitly mentioned several times in this
letter; he is the enemy of the children of God (2:14; 5:18); a inner from
the beginning (3:8); and has the world in his power (5:18- 19; cf. Jn
16:11).

"The Apostle writes: 'You have overcome the evil one'! And so it is. It
is necessary to keep going back to the origin of evil and of sin in the
history of mankind and the universe, just as Christ went back to these
same roots in the Paschal Mystery of his Cross and Resurrection.
There is no need to be afraid to call the first agent of evil by his name--
the Evil One. The strategy which he used and continues to use is that
of not revealing himself, so that the evil implanted by him from the be-
ginning may receive its development from man himself, from systems
and from relationships between individuals, from classes and nations--
so as also to become ever more a 'structural' sin, ever less identifiable
as 'personal sin'. In other words, so that man may feel in a certain
sense 'freed' from sin but at the same time be ever more deeply im-
mersed in it" (John Paul II, "Letter to Youth", 31 March 1985, 15).

15-17. The term "world" has a number of meanings in Sacred Scripture
(cf. note on Jn 17:14-16). Here it has the pejorative sense of enemy of
God and man (cf. also note on Jas 1:26-27), and includes everything
that is opposed to God--the kingdom of sin. Following Christ involves a
radical choice: "No one can serve two masters" (Mt 6:24); "friendship
with the world is enmity with God" (Jas 4:4).

"The pride of life": this is the usual translation in Latin. The original
Greek says more or less "the arrogance of earthly things"; the two
translations are compatible because reliance on material things leads
to pride.

The list St John gives here of the signs of a worldly life summarizes
everything opposed to fidelity to the love of God. "Lust of the flesh is
not limited to disordered sensuality. It also means softness, laziness
bent on the easiest, most pleasurable, way, any apparent shortcut,
even at the expense of fidelity to God [...]. We can and ought to fight
always to overcome the lust of the flesh, because, if we are humble,
we will always be granted the grace of our Lord.

"St John tells us that the other enemy is the lust of the eyes, a deep-
seated avariciousness that leads us to appreciate only what we can
touch. Such eyes are glued to earthly things and, consequently, they
are blind to supernatural realities. We can, then, use this expression
of Sacred Scripture to mean that disordered desire for material things,
as well as that deformation which views everything around us--other
people, the circumstances of our life and of our age--in a merely hu-
man way.

"Then the eyes of our soul grow dull. Reason proclaims itself capable of
understanding everything, without the aid of God. This is a subtle temp-
tation which hides behind the power of our intellect, given by our Father
God to man so that he might know and love him freely. Seduced by this
temptation, the human mind appoints itself the center of the universe,
being thrilled with the prospect that 'you will be like God' (Gen 3:5). So
filled with love for itself, it turns its back on the love of God.

"In this way does our existence fall prey unconditionally to the third
enemy: pride of life. It's not merely a question of passing thoughts
of vanity or self-love, it's a state of general conceit. Let's not deceive
ourselves, for this is the worst of all evils, the root of every false step.
The fight against pride has to be a constant battle, to such an extent
that someone once said that pride only disappears twenty-four hours
after each of us has died. It is the arrogance of the Pharisee whom
God cannot transform because he finds in him the obstacle of self-
sufficiency. It is the haughtiness which leads to despising others, to
lording it over them, to mistreating them. For 'when pride comes, then
comes disgrace' (Prov 11:2)" ([St] J. Escriva, "Christ Is Pas- sing By",

Anna's Prophecy



[36] And there was a prophetess Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the
tribe of Ahser; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband
seven years from her virginity, [37] and as a widow till she was eighty-
four. She did not depart from the temple, worshipping with fasting and
prayer night and day. [38] And coming up at that very hour she gave
thanks to God, and spoke of Him to all who were looking for the re-
demption of Jerusalem.

The Childhood of Jesus


[39] And when they had performed everything according to the law of
the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. [40] And
the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of
God was upon Him.



Commentary:

36-38. Anna's testimony is very similar to Simeon's; like him, she too
has been awaiting the coming of the Messiah her whole life long, in
faithful service of God, and she too is rewarded with the joy of seeing
Him. "She spoke of Him," that is, of the Child--praising God in her
prayer and exhorting others to believe that this Child is the Messiah.

Thus, the birth of Christ was revealed by three kinds of witnesses in
three different ways--first, by the shepherds, after the angel's announ
cement; second, by the Magi, who were guided by a star; third, by
Simeon and Anna, who were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

All who, like Simeon and Anna, persevere in piety and in the service of
God, no matter how insignificant their lives seem in men's eyes, become
instruments the Holy Spirit uses to make Christ known to other. In His
plan of redemption God avails of these simple souls to do much good to
all mankind.

39. Before their return to Nazareth, St. Matthew tells us (2:13-23), the
Holy Family fled to Egypt where they stayed for some time.

40. "Our Lord Jesus Christ as a child, that is, as one clothed in the
fragility of human nature, had to grow and become stronger but as the
eternal Word of God He had no need to become stronger or to grow.
Hence He is rightly described as full of wisdom and grace" (St. Bede,
"In Lucae Evangelium Expositio, in loc.").

Our salvation is very near

The Lord's kindness to the house of David

The word made flesh makes us divine
Our faith is not founded upon empty words; nor are we carried away by mere caprice or beguiled by specious arguments. On the contrary, we put our faith in words spoken by the power of God, spoken by the Word himself at God’s command. God wished to win men back from disobedience, not by using force to reduce him to slavery but by addressing to his free will a call to liberty.
The Word spoke first of all through the prophets, but because the message was couched in such obscure language that it could be only dimly apprehended, in the last days the Father sent the Word in person, commanding him to show himself openly so that the world could see him and be saved.
We know that by taking a body from the Virgin he re-fashioned our fallen nature. We know that his manhood was of the same clay as our own; if this were not so, he would hardly have been a teacher who could expect to be imitated. If he were of a different substance from me, he would surely not have ordered me to do as he did, when by my very nature I am so weak. Such a demand could not be reconciled with his goodness and justice.
No. He wanted us to consider him as no different from ourselves, and so he worked, he was hungry and thirsty, he slept. Without protest he endured his passion, he submitted to death and revealed his resurrection. In all these ways he offered his own manhood as the first fruits of our race to keep us from losing heart when suffering comes our way, and to make us look forward to receiving the same reward as he did, since we know that we possess the same humanity.
When we have come to know the true God, both our bodies and our souls will be immortal and incorruptible. We shall enter the kingdom of heaven, because while we lived on earth we acknowledged heaven’s King. Friends of God and co-heirs with Christ, we shall be subject to no evil desires or inclinations, or to any affliction of body or soul, for we shall have become divine.
Whatever evil you may have suffered, being man, it is God that sent it to you, precisely because you are man; but equally, when you have been deified, God has promised you a share in every one of his own attributes. The saying Know yourself means therefore that we should recognise and acknowledge in ourselves the God who made us in his own image, for if we do this, we in turn will be recognised and acknowledged by our Maker.
So let us not be at enmity with ourselves, but change our way of life without delay. For Christ who is God, exalted above all creation, has taken away man’s sin and has re-fashioned our fallen nature. In the beginning God made man in his image and so gave proof of his love for us. If we obey his holy commands and learn to imitate his goodness, we shall be like him and he will honour us. God is not beggarly, and for the sake of his own glory he has given us a share in his divinity.

Sixth day in the Octave of Christmas

It would be ideal if we could devote several days of the Christmas octave to quiet contemplation, entering ever more deeply into the sweet and profound mystery of the Incarnation; yet much of the time is devoted to the saints. All the more precious, therefore, is this day, an unencumbered Christmas day.

The Sixth Day of Christmas

God became Man. Utterly incomprehensible is this truth to our puny human minds! That the eternal God whom heaven and earth cannot contain, who bears the world in His hand as a nutshell, before whom a thousand years are as one day — that this eternal, omnipotent God should become Man! Would it not have been a tremendous condescension if for the redemption of mankind He had simply sent an angel? Would it not have proven His loving mercy had He appeared for a mere moment in the splendor of His majesty, amid thunder and lightning, as once on Sinai? No, such would have shown far too little of His love and kindness. He wanted to be like us, to become a child of man, a poor child of poorest people; He wished to be born, in a cave, in a strange land, in hostile surroundings. Cold wind, hard straw, dumb animals — these were there to greet Him. The scene fills us with amazement; what other can we do than fall down in silence and adore!

In heaven only will we comprehend the profound implications of Christ's redemptive acts, surely one of the exquisite joys of celestial blessedness. But some points Mother Church allows us to anticipate here below. She, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, is ever the recollected woman "who meditates on all the words of God and keeps them in her heart." She tells us: God became Man that we might share His divine nature. Isn't that mankind's long-cherished dream? "You shall be as God, knowing good and evil," Satan whispered into man's ear in paradise; and his whisper was believed. What a miserable betrayal! Indeed, man experienced good and evil, but he had not turned divine. Thousands upon thousands of years of dreadful distance from divinity, with nought but failure in scanning the skies! Not by pride can man become God, but by submission, humility.

Bethlehem gave the great revelation. God put on the beggar's garb, became a tiny, crying Babe in order to show man how to become divine. In paradise a fallen angel had promised: Eat of this fruit and you will be like God. He ate and became a prisoner of hell. On Christmas night another angel (the Church) stands before man, offers him a Good and says: Eat of this and you will be like God. For the divine Food, the Flesh of the incarnate Son of God, makes us "partakers of the divine nature."

December 30, Six Day in the Octave of Christmas

God is your beatitude. The things of time are toys. You are eternity's child and your eternity has already begun! There is a compelling urgency to every day and every hour of the day. In it we are to witness to the truth — that God greeted and gifted us at Christmas.

If you know what witness means, you understand why God brings St. Stephen, St. John, and the Holy Innocents to the crib in the cave as soon as Christ is born liturgically. To be a witness is to be a martyr. Holy Mother Church wishes us to realize that we were born in baptism to become Christ — He who was the world's outstanding Martyr. — Love Does Such Things, by Rev. A love that gave without expecting anything in return

Sixth Day of the Octave of Chistmas

Luke 2:36-40
There was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the Temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Introductory Prayer: Dear Jesus, I come once more into you presence. I want to unite myself to you in prayer, to be one with you. I ask you to help me adopt as my own the charity that existed in the Holy Family. I want to love you and my brothers in that very same way, with intensity, purity and self-giving. I hope that this time spent with you will fill me with the graces I need to live today and every day with Christian charity.

Petition:Lord, help me to love as the Holy Family did.

1. The Quiet Saint.   Anna was an elderly woman who spent all her waking moments in the Temple in prayer. She was always there at God’s disposition, interceding for her loved ones, as so many of our grandparents do. She is one of those many quiet saints who go unnoticed in so many churches. Her heart is full of peaceful prayer and joy. She has lived a life that is full, but she believes she has something more to give. She believes in the power of prayer. She finds her vocation there in the presence of God, interceding for the world.

2. Love Unveiled.   The Gospels say that Simeon was inspired by the Holy Spirit, and so could recognize the Christ Child when he saw him. But Anna … how did she pick out the Holy Family amidst the many people who bustled in and out of the Temple? It’s possible she witnessed Simeon’s encounter with the Holy Family. But it’s even more likely that she recognized in this young family a spiritual aura that her intimate relationship with God had conditioned her to perceive. She beheld the love of the Holy Family, an undeniable, pure, sacrificial love that seemed to permeate everything around them. They could be recognized by their peaceful, glowing countenances, and by the warmth with which they treated each other and those around them. Would Anna have recognized something similar in my countenance and behavior had I been present that day? Would the purity and kindness in my eyes give me away as an intimate friend of the infant Messiah who was carried into the Temple that day?

3. Nazareth, School of Love Mary, Joseph and Jesus had to suffer much before ever arriving to the Presentation in the Temple.   Their love had been severely tested, but seemed to grow with each trial: long, harsh journeys; hunger and cold; lack of a decent roof over their heads; being hunted down by the king’s assassins, etc. They showed by their example that boundless self-giving is at the heart of real love. Does this real love describe my relationship with those around me? Do I live unconditional love for my Heavenly Father? Do I give myself to my spouse and children without counting the cost? Do I show a generous love for my neighbors and those in need? This selfless love, a love that gave without expecting anything in return, was the heart of the Holy Family.

Conversation with Christ: Dear Lord Jesus, while I can’t spend all day in church like Anna, I do want to be habitually united to you in prayer, turning to you throughout the day. Prayerful conversation with you — if only for a minute at a time — should be the rule and not the exception in my busy life. This ongoing contact with you will enable me to see the world and those around me through your eyes, and inspire me to greater self-giving to those souls you place in my path. Strengthen me, Lord, to live the same selfless charity that was lived out by your family in Nazareth.

Resolution: I will do an act of hidden charity today that only God can see.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
God the compassionate Father anointed his Son with the Holy Spirit and sent him to bring good news to the poor. Let us ask him, then:
God of compassion, take pity on us.
Compassionate and ever-living God, you want all men to be saved and come to knowledge of your truth. We thank you for having given this world your only-begotten Son:
may the whole earth rejoice at his nativity.
You sent your Son to bring the good news to the poor, to announce freedom for captives and proclaim the time of grace:
grant to mankind the gifts of liberty and peace.
You guided the wise men of the Gentiles to see your Son and worship him:
accept the worship of our faithful prayer.
After them, you call all men out of the shadows and into your light, so that at the name of Jesus every knee may bend:

Meditation
1 John 2:12-17



Sometimes we receive a divine inspiration that seems to come from outside ourselves and radically changes our lives. A line from Scripture, something we hear in a homily, even a casual remark by a friend may strike us, and we make a dramatic change. However, God’s inspirations more often arise from within us. They ripen slowly and are expressed in our own way of speaking, intertwined with the images and experiences of our daily lives.

In today’s passage, John addresses three different groups of believers, pointing out how God is at work within them. Little children enjoy quick repentance and ready forgiveness; they relate spontaneously to God as their Father. Parents share in the miracle of God’s parenting; they encounter his care as they raise their children. Young people are empowered to resist temptation and overcome evil; their strength has its source in the One who has overcome all sin.

How is God at work within you? Try to pay attention today to his inspirations. What song do you find yourself humming as you go about your work? To what person or situation do you find yourself drawn? What grieves you, thrills you, disgusts you, or intrigues you? If someone is on your mind, lift that person up in prayer, and try to make contact with him or her.

Remember: God is the inspiration and goal of every good impulse. Does this mean that every impulse has its origin in God? Of course not. John points out that the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches are not from the Father (1 John 2:16) but of this passing world.

How can you tell the difference? If you stop and reflect, letting your emotions settle a bit, it’s usually clear whether the motivation is from self-love or love for God and his people. If you don’t trust your discernment, you might want to turn to a Christian friend or spiritual adviser.

One thing is clear: Fear of doing the wrong thing should never hold us back from acting on the inspirations God gives every day to the unique individuals he has created.

Holy Spirit, you are alive within me, nearer than my very self. Open my heart to the ways you are inspiring me today to love as you love.

THE JANUARY BLUES
 
"Carnal allurements, enticements for the eye, the life of empty show — all these are from the world." —1 John 2:16
 

"Have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love has no place in him" (1 Jn 2:15). Christmas is nothing less and can be nothing more than receiving the Father's love through Jesus in the Spirit. Therefore, if we love the world, both the Father's love and Christmas are displaced, pushed out of our lives. Consequently, if we celebrate the worldly "Christmas," paradoxically we deprive ourselves of the real Christmas.

Some are naive enough to think they can do both, but the Spirit and the flesh are diametrically opposed (Gal 5:17). We can't serve two masters, even at Christmas time (Lk 16:13). If we are the world's friend, we are God's enemy (Jas 4:4).

May your Christmas be real and therefore lasting. May your Christmas continue throughout the entire new year and not leave you cold and empty with January blues. May you give thanks to God and talk about the Christ Child to all who look forward to the deliverance of God's people (Lk 2:38). May you grow in strength, be filled with wisdom, and may the grace of God be upon you this Christmas and new year (Lk 2:40).

 
Prayer: Holy Spirit, may I break with the world so as not to stifle You. May Christmas not disappear but continue and grow in my heart.
Promise: "She was constantly in the temple, worshiping day and night in fasting and prayer." —Lk 2:37
Praise: Father Tim took extra time during the week to listen to the Lord while preparing for Sunday Mass. During his homily, a man was moved to tears and accepted Jesus into his heart.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.
