Heck, if you lived in those countries, you'd probably be crawling across the border at midnight, too.
When our 19th century immigrant parents came in, btw, standards were much more lax. All you really needed to be was healthy and free of TB, and have the address of people here who would house you or support you while you got on your feet. Many of the things such as teaching English, hygeine, etc. were done by private voluntary organizations.
Part of the problem is that we have a vast welfare state that we didn't have in the 19th century, and this has complicated even immigration enormously.
No, actually I wouldn't be. My standards of honesty wouldn't permit it. And there are large numbers of people from those same countries who are taking the LEGAL ROUTE to coming to the US who obviously have the same standards. Those are the ones we want---not those who break our laws.
I don't care who they are, or what their motivations were--if they're here illegally, then they should be deported. I'd support a program that would let in one of those legally waiting to immigrate for every illegal deported.
