An eminent confirmation

From a news dispatch by the Italian news agency ANSA:

"The publication of the Motu Proprio from the Pope which will liberalize the celebration of the Latin Mass according to the Missal of Saint Pius V is close." Who affirmed this was Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez, member of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, which met this morning to discuss the liberalization of the Mass in Latin. "We studied the document with tranquility," the Cardinal affirmed. "We discussed [it] together for over 4 hours and to make some corrections to the text of the Motu Proprio." The next step belongs to Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos (president of the commission), who will present the text to Benedict XVI. There shall perhaps be another meeting of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, Medina added. Another member of the [Commission], the Cardinal of Lyon [sic -> Bordeaux], Jean Pierre [sic] Ricard, did not wish to make any comment, underlining that "[he] is bound by the pontifical secret".

Thanks to Gilbert and other readers for the tip (and I apologize for not posting it before -- busy day). (Sources: in French --in which it is reported that Medina would have said that another plenary meeting is "probably not needed"; original ANSA dispatch in Italian)

A meeting of the Ecclesia Dei Commmission was held today and it is reported that a motu proprio on the Latin Mass is in the works with a publication date set for January. A number of outlets have picked this up and Sandro Magister is sure to explain.

PING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Motu Proprio “soon”
CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:17 pm

I have been pretty tied up today with things like press conferences, a conference of the Acton Institute here in Rome, gett ready for a flight tomorrow and losing my glasses… so…. there is "Tridentine" news.

From the Italian agency ANSA, we have a comment from Jorge Arturo Cardinal Medina Estevez, a member of the Pont. Comm. "Ecclesia Dei" that the Motu Proprio will be coming out soon…. "è prossima". They studied the document carefully and worked on it for 4 hours, making some adjustments. The President of the Commission Dario Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos will take it to the Pope when it is ready.

See, I told you all I needed to do to get the document going was to make plans for a trip away from Rome and, at 0600 tomorrow, I am on the airplane.

UPDATE: It looks like everything was removed from ANSA, but it seems that I.MEDIA has it.

The UR-source seems to be I.MEDIA:

La publication du "motu proprio" – un acte équivalant à un décret pris par le pape – visant à libéraliser la célébration de la messe selon le missel de saint Pie V est proche. C’est ce qu’a confirmé mardi le cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez, membre de la Commission Ecclesia Dei, qui a pour mission de faciliter le retour à la pleine communion ecclésiale des disciples de Mgr Lefebvre. ...

...

The rest is the same as the Italian.

Major update ping on yesterday's meeting from Rorate Caeli:

Wednesday, December 13, 2006
Some more information on yesterday's meeting

On this Wednesday's edition of Il Giornale, Andrea Tornielli confirms the words provided by Cardinal Medina on the content of the plenary meeting of the Ecclesia Dei commission, reported here yesterday, and adds some new information:

...

In the order of the day for the meeting was also a discussion on the juridical framework in which to place the Lefebvrists after their readmission into full communion with the Holy See.

The debated questions were, thus, two. ...

Benedict XVI intends to extend the indult of his predecessor, in fact withdrawing from the bishops discretionary power on the matter: the Missal of Saint Pius V is no longer abolished, and even if the ordinary Roman Rite is that originated from the post-conciliar liturgical reform, the old one -- used by centuries in the Church -- can subsist as an "extraordinary rite".

The bishops, therefore, will not be able to deny the ancient mass anymore, but only regulate its eventual celebration, together with the parish priests, harmonising it with the need of the community. The corrections included would have reduced from 50 to 30 the minimal number of faithful who ask for the celebration according to the old rite. As for the readmission of the Lefebvrists, once the rite of Saint Pius V is liberalized, the deal should be easier.

Okay, so help a frazzled mom out here.
Is this saying that the Universal Indult is coming soon?
Is this a "for sure" and will not be left up to the Bishops????

Okay, so help a frazzled mom out here. Is this saying that the Universal Indult is coming soon?

The date is not discussed per se, but I have heard estimates of "early 2007". That sounds, at first, like a cop out but there is much to consider. Does the Latin Missal use the one year Pian Missal or the new three-year N.O. Missal? Is a compromise to be made on the Missal (I saw one source predicting a Benedictine Missal with a compromise containing some newer saints). That is where we are now. The ultimate outcome appears as if it is settled.

Is this a "for sure" and will not be left up to the Bishops????

An early release of this whole process had Cardinal Arinze defending the premise of "if 100 Catholics demand a Tridentine Mass, then it should be offered." I had heard it had been whittled down to 30 which is the number in these reports. This means, as the comments section of Rorate Caeli points out, that if SSPX parishioners "infiltrate" the local N.O. Church, they can demand the Tridentine Mass and get it. That is not as insidious as it sounds. Perhaps that is what Benedict is trying to accomplish, in fact. Also, there is much written about the role of Archbishop Burke and his role in the Institute of Christ the King. When they were first invited into the U.S., the argument was made that the Indult granted by Pope John Paul II allowed only that the Mass be said in Latin and that the form of the sacraments be done in the N.O. fashion. As Archbishop Burke is a genius canonist, he showed that this was hogwash and the ICK has the full range of Tridentine sacraments.

In sum, people are no longer arguing IF this will get done. They are discussing WHAT it will look like. It is the "matter of factness" of this by Fr. Zuhlsdorf that astounds me. There may be a vicious counterattack, but from whence will it come? From Europe where nobody goes to Mass? From America where the census is falling by the minute. Add to that the fact that Benedict has just exhorted more and more that Chant and Latin are necessary in seminaries. I think you can see how he is laying the overall groundwork brick by brick.

>>I think you can see how he is laying the overall groundwork brick by brick.<<

God Bless our wonderful Pope! May he live a long and healthy life.

Our very young Pastor is on the rotation to celebrate the TLM at our indult parish downtown. If we have a Universal Indult, we will have a TLM immediately! Our parish is expanding and has around 800 families now. If we add the SSPXers in the immediate area, we will be busting at the seams!!!! God be praised!

And you know, we have six masses on Sunday. I always wondered why my pastor elected to put an 8:30pm instead of filling the 3:30 spot when he added the extra mass. 1:30 would be a perfect time for a High Holy Mass! The next one isn't until 6:30!

In my fevered imagination, Pope Benedict will announce this at his Urbi et Orbi on Christmas Day with thousands upon thousands at Piazza San Pietro. "Dear Brothers and Sisters, I release the Old Mass."

May your thought reach God's ears and Pope Benedict's imagination. I think it will be later--in 2007--but what a present that would be for Christmas!
