A Greek Orthodox priest was threatened with a knife and robbed of his large gold crucifix he wore around his neck in an incident Tuesday afternoon in the 3100 block of Hampton Avenue, St. Louis police said.

The priest, 46, was standing next to his car on a resturant parking lot about 1:15 p.m. when a man approached, pulled out a switch blade knife that had tape around the handle, and said, "Who do you think you are? (Blanking) Nelly?" The robber demanded the priest's crucifix and he and an accomplice ran down an alley.

The priest was not injured, but was so shaken that he had to sit in his car for about 15 minutes before he could call the police, police said. The crucifix has a monetary value of about $500

Some hip-hop "artist". Pretty sad day when thugs see a cross on a priest, and think THAT'S out of place...

Nelly is a very popular rapper from St. Louis. There is going to be a special place in hell for this robber.

Priests should not be wearing a cross valued at $500. I love our Pope dearly and although I think he is an exception, I even have some issues with his bling. These are our role models of Christ and I just can't picture valuable adornment on Jesus.

As I recall, Mary Magdalene upset a few folks when she poured expensive perfume on Jesus' head. That was considered 'valuable adornment'. Perhaps this priest's cross was a gift from someone. I don't tend to go in for ostentatiousness on the part of those who are supposedly called into ministry (just think TBN) but it is not necessarily the true that a $500 cross is sinful.

Orthodox priests generally where a black cassock (although some wear suits and clerical collars) outside the church, as well as under their vestments while performing services, and along with that goes a pectoral cross. It is a symbol of their office, and often are given to them upon their ordinations. I think they sometimes might buy their own. But since these are relatively large crosses with heavy chains, a $500 cross would probably be a pretty modest one.

Interesting. My oldest son intends to go to seminary after college and become an Orthodox priest. Now I know where to get him a gift. ;-)

Thugs should not be robbing people at knifepoint.

Sad. I'm sure though, being the good man he probably is, he's probably already forgiven his attacker.

Priests are much maligned in this country, and a few rightfully so, but the majority are very loving, forgiving people. It's amazing how much they give without expecting anything in return.

As far as the $500 crucifix goes, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that's the most valuable possession he owns, by far.

Who's "Nelly"?

Isn't that (Blanking) Nelly?

Su nombre es Cornell Haynes Jr. nació en la ciudad de St. Louis, Estados Unidos. Su nombre artístico es NELLY.

I think it would be great PR for Nelly to replace the stolen object. Thugs stealing in his name aren't showing proper respect.
