Dear Peter,
I began reading your letter to the leaders of Truro and The Falls Church earlier this evening, and I’ve still not recovered from the ecstasy that overtook me.
During my oceanography days, some of the ship captains used a colloquialism to express their admiration for a manly man: “He’s got a pair.” So do you, my brother. So do you.
I felt two of the slightest disappointments in your letter.
First, I don’t think you were quite threatening enough. I have been honing my skills at public shaming techniques in the past month, and take it from my increasing expertise: These people respond to fear. The effect you want is of a parent who is bitterly disappointed, but also just angry enough to be a bit crazed.
Second, what’s up with distributing this letter through diocesan channels? We are working mightily to establish Episcopal News Service as the authoritative pipeline for all pronouncements of consequence. The slogan we’re considering says it all, I think: “The Only Voice You Can Trust.”
Next time you’re up in Manhattan, swing on by 815. I’ve got some fat Montecristos I’d love to smoke with you.
