Catholic Q&A: Angels and Demons (Fr. Thomas J. Euteneuer)

1. What is an exorcism?
Q: I saw your article about a post-exorcism experience on Spirit Daily. Just what is an exorcism and is it anything like the movies?

Exorcisms are rarely similar to what is portrayed in the movies such as The Exorcist or The Exorcism of Emily Rose (see below). There are certainly points of comparison, but Hollywood needs theatrics to dress up or sensationalize an experience of something extraordinary like the supernatural battle against evil. The exaggerations of Hollywood only serve to diminish our sense of the reality of evil and the existence of the devil....

Fundamentally, an exorcism is a potent prayer calling down the power of God to free an individual who is oppressed or possessed by the devil. It is not a sacrament. It is a sacramental....

...The Catholic Church has a ritual of exorcism, revised in 1999, that is used by the priest in the performance of an exorcism. An exorcist may also use the ritual that was promulgated in 1614. In my opinion there is not even the slightest comparison of the two—the 1614 ritual is infinitely better.

I guess Fr. Euteneuer agrees with Fr. Amorth, the exorcist of the Diocese of Rome (See Fr. Gabriel Amorth on the Reform of the Rite of Exorcism)

When I was in school, we had a student who was particularly dedicated to fighting abortion through prayer in front of the clinic. After her sudden death, many students embraced her mission as their own. On the second or third aniversary of her death, a priest from Priest for Life, prayed in front of the clinic with us, and afterwords performed a "minor" exorcism of the building.

It closed within the year.

Fundamentally, an exorcism is a potent prayer calling down the power of God to free an individual who is oppressed or possessed by the devil. It is not a sacrament. It is a sacramental.

Pyro, if you have the opportunity, do attend a Maronite Baptism. The Maronite Rite of Baptism includes four prayers of exorcism, and they all clearly invoke the mighty power of God over the forces of evil. From the Epiclesis over the baptismal water.

O Lord,
may the Holy Spirit come and abide
in these waters.
May He drive away from them
the power of the enemy.
May He enkindle them
with an invincible strength.
May He bless + them
sanctify + them
and make them like the waters
which flowed from the side of your only
Son on the Cross ...
May they be clad against the attacks
of the evil one with heavenly vesture
and with the shield of faith.

During the Rite of Exorcism, the priest asks those present, to turn around and face the doors of the church, acting like a human shield.

My mother says the new Ritual does nothing but condemn a soul to more agony and spiritually endanger the priest performing the ritual.

My older boys were baptized in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and my baby was baptized in the Maronite Church. We did this in order to give them a full and correct Catholic form of Baptism. Rescued again by Light from the East!

Rescued again by Light from the East!

CHRIST THE LIGHT

Glory to you, O marvelous One, our Light,
Your pure light has dispersed the darkness,
And creatures are illumined by the glow of your countenance.
We raise our plea to Christ, the Most High,
Who manifested himself to us in his hidden glory.
Let us rejoice together in sweet hope;
Our Night will end and the dawn will appear.
Then we shall behold your splendid light.

"Was this a Planned Parenthood clinic?"

I believe so, it's been a few years, but I am pretty sure it was a PP clinic. It was a faily drab, ugly building, like all other PP clinics I have seen.

It didn’t scare me but I found it interesting how some in the book fell into possession.
