Phil 1:1-11

Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus,
to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi,
with the bishops and deacons:
grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you,
praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you,
because of your partnership for the Gospel
from the first day until now.
I am confident of this,
that the one who began a good work in you
will continue to complete it
until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right that I should think this way about all of you,
because I hold you in my heart,
you who are all partners with me in grace,
both in my imprisonment
and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel.
For God is my witness,
how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this is my prayer:
that your love may increase ever more and more
in knowledge and every kind of perception,
to discern what is of value,
so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine
at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,
and the people there were observing him carefully.
In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy.
Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking,
“Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?”
But they kept silent; so he took the man and,
after he had healed him, dismissed him.
Then he said to them
“Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern,
would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?”
But they were unable to answer his question.

November Devotion: The Holy Souls in Purgatory


Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. As a reminder of our duty to pray for the suffering faithful in Purgatory, the Church has dedicated the month of November to the Holy Souls. The Holy Souls are those who have died in the state of grace but who are not yet free from all punishment due to their unforgiven venial sins and all other sins already forgiven for which satisfaction is still to be made. They are certain of entering Heaven, but first they must suffer in Purgatory. The Holy Souls cannot help themselves because for them the night has come, when no man can work (John 9:4). It is our great privilege of brotherhood that we can shorten their time of separation from God by our prayers, good works, and, especially, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

INVOCATION
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
My Jesus, by the sorrows Thou didst suffer in Thine agony in the Garden, in Thy scourging and crowning with thorns, in the way to Calvary, in Thy crucifixion and death, have mercy on the souls in purgatory, and especially on those that are most forsaken; do Thou deliver them from the dire torments they endure; call them and admit them to Thy most sweet embrace in paradise.
Our Father, Hail Mary, Eternal rest, etc.

FOR ALL THE DECEASED
By Thy resurrection from the dead, O Christ, death no longer hath dominion over those who die in holiness. So, we beseech Thee, give rest to Thy servants in Thy sanctuary and in Abraham's bosom. Grant it to those, who from Adam until now have adored Thee with purity, to our fathers and brothers, to our kinsmen and friends, to all men who have lived by faith and passed on their road to Thee, by a thousand ways, and in all conditions, and make them worthy of the heavenly kingdom.
Byzantine Liturgy

DE PROFUNDIS
The psalmist is crying out here from the depression that grips him because of his sense of sin. He tells God that no man could be forgiven should strict justice be demanded; but, since God is forgiving and merciful, the psalmist (Israel) will hope for redemption from iniquities. We, who know the mercy of God far better than the g Israelites, may pray this psalm with even greater trust in God.
The Church uses this psalm in the liturgy as her official prayer for the souls in Purgatory.

Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my, voice!
Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication:
If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?
But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered.
I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word.

Psalm 130

THE MISERERE
This psalm is a marvelous act of contrition, confession, and supplication by a repentant sinner. It was composed by David after his sin with Bethsabee. In reparation David promises to lead others back to God by telling them of the ways of divine justice. Instead of offering God an external sacrifice which he knows He will not accept, he offers instead the sacrifice of a contrite and humble heart, a sacrifice that will always be most pleasing in the eyes of God.
Have mercy on me, 0 God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me.
For I acknowledge my offense, and my sin is before me always:
"Against You only have I sinned, and done what is evil in Your sight"--
That You may be justified in Your sentence, vindicated when You condemn.
Indeed, in guilt was I born, and in sin my mother conceived me;

FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offenses and negligences, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."

Reading Pope John XXIII's sermon at the canonisation of St Martin de Porres
Martin the Charitable
The example of Martin’s life is ample evidence that we can strive for holiness and salvation as Christ Jesus has shown us: first, by loving God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind; and second, by loving our neighbour as ourselves.
When Martin had come to realise that Christ Jesus suffered for us and that he carried our sins on his body to the cross, he would meditate with remarkable ardour and affection about Christ on the cross. Whenever he would contemplate Christ’s terrible torture he would be reduced to tears. He had an exceptional love for the great sacrament of the eucharist and often spent long hours in prayer before the blessed sacrament. His desire was to receive the sacrament in communion as often as he could.
Saint Martin, always obedient and inspired by his divine teacher, dealt with his brothers with that profound love which comes from pure faith and humility of spirit. He loved men because he honestly looked on them as God’s children and as his own brothers and sisters. Such was his humility that he loved them even more than himself and considered them to be better and more righteous than he was.
He did not blame others for their shortcomings. Certain that he deserved more severe punishment for his sins than others did, he would overlook their worst offences. He was tireless in his efforts to reform the criminal, and he would sit up with the sick to bring them comfort. For the poor he would provide food, clothing and medicine. He did all he could to care for poor farmhands, blacks and mulattoes who were looked down upon as slaves, the dregs of society in their time. Common people responded by calling him “Martin the charitable”.
The virtuous example and even the conversation of this saintly man exerted a powerful influence in drawing men to religion. It is remarkable how even today his influence can still move us toward the things of heaven. Sad to say, not all of us understand these spiritual values as well as we should, nor do we give them a proper place in our lives. Many of us, in fact, strongly attracted by sin, may look upon these values as of little moment, even something of a nuisance, or we ignore them altogether. It is deeply rewarding for men striving for salvation to follow in Christ’s footsteps and to obey God’s commandments. If only everyone could learn this lesson from the example that Martin gave us.

St. Martin de Porres
(1579-1639)

"Father unknown" is the cold legal phrase sometimes used on baptismal records. "Half-breed" or "war souvenir" is the cruel name inflicted by those of "pure" blood. Like many others, Martin might have grown to be a bitter man, but he did not. It was said that even as a child he gave his heart and his goods to the poor and despised.

He was the illegitimate son of a freed woman of Panama, probably black but also possibly of Native American stock, and a Spanish grandee of Lima, Peru. He inherited the features and dark complexion of his mother. That irked his father, who finally acknowledged his son after eight years. After the birth of a sister, the father abandoned the family. Martin was reared in poverty, locked into a low level of Lima’s society.

At 12 his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. He learned how to cut hair and also how to draw blood (a standard medical treatment then), care for wounds and prepare and administer medicines.

After a few years in this medical apostolate, Martin applied to the Dominicans to be a "lay helper," not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the example of his prayer and penance, charity and humility led the community to request him to make full religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in prayer and penitential practices; his days were filled with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was particularly impressive that he treated all people regardless of their color, race or status. He was instrumental in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves brought from Africa and managed the daily alms of the priory with practicality as well as generosity. He became the procurator for both priory and city, whether it was a matter of "blankets, shirts, candles, candy, miracles or prayers!" When his priory was in debt, he said, "I am only a poor mulatto. Sell me. I am the property of the order. Sell me."

Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen, laundry and infirmary, Martin’s life reflected God’s extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures and a remarkable rapport with animals. His charity extended to beasts of the field and even to the vermin of the kitchen. He would excuse the raids of mice and rats on the grounds that they were underfed; he kept stray cats and dogs at his sister’s house.

He became a formidable fundraiser, obtaining thousands of dollars for dowries for poor girls so that they could marry or enter a convent.

Many of his fellow religious took him as their spiritual director, but he continued to call himself a "poor slave." He was a good friend of another Dominican saint of Peru, Rose of Lima.

Comment:

Racism is a sin almost nobody confesses. Like pollution, it is a "sin of the world" that is everybody's responsibility but apparently nobody's fault. One could hardly imagine a more fitting patron of Christian forgiveness (on the part of those discriminated against) and Christian justice (on the part of reformed racists) than Martin de Porres.

Optional Memorial of St. Martin de Porres, religious

Old Calendar: Hubert of Liege

Today the Church celebrates the optional memorial of St. Martin de Porres, religious, who lived a life of fasting, prayer and penance as a Dominican lay brother. He was born in Peru of a Spanish knight and a Negro woman from Panama. Martin inherited the features and dark complexion of his mother, and for that reason his noble father eventually turned the boy out of his house. After a turn as a surgeon's apprentice, the young man joined the Dominicans as a laybrother and was put in charge of the infirmary of a friary in Lima. Soon he was caring for the sick of the city and the slaves brought to Peru from Africa — not to mention the animals with which he is often pictured. Martin had the gift of miracles; and although he had no formal training, he was often consulted on theological questions by great churchmen of his day. St. Rose of Lima and Bl. John Massias were among his close friends. He is unofficially called the patron of social justice.

Before the reform of the Roman Calendar in 1969, this was the feast of St. Hubert, priest. His feastday is no longer on the Universal Roman Calendar, but has been transferred to particular calendars.


St. Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres was born at Lima, Peru, in 1579. He was the illegitimate son of a Spanish gentleman. His mother was a freed-slave from Panama, maybe black but also possibly of Indian blood. At fifteen, he became a laybrother at the Dominican Friary at Lima and spent his whole life there — as a barber, farm-laborer, almoner, and infirmarian among other things.

Martin had a great desire to go off to some foreign mission and thus earn the palm of martyrdom. However, since this was not possible, he made a martyr out of his body, devoting himself to ceaseless and severe penances. In turn, God endowed him with many graces and wondrous gifts, such as aerial flights and bilocation.

St. Martin's love was all-embracing, shown equally to humans and animals, including vermin, and he maintained a cats' and dogs' hospital at his sister's house. He also possessed spiritual wisdom, demonstrated in his solving his sister's marriage problems, raising a dowry for his niece inside of three days' time, and resolving theological problems for the learned of his Order and for Bishops. A close friend of St. Rose of Lima, this saintly man died on November 3, 1639 and was canonized on May 6, 1962.

  • Say a Hail Mary for those sold into slavery in the Sudan where tens of thousands of children and adults have been snatched from their homes, or anywhere in the world where slavery is practiced.

St. Hubert
Late in the eighth century, so runs the story, a hunter named Hubert, neither better nor worse than he should have been, was tracking a stag through the forest of the Ardennes. As he readied himself to shoot the animal with his arrow, he was startled when the stag turned suddenly in its flight, and he saw between its antlers a luminous cross. This experience caused Hubert to change his way of life, and he never hunted again. Yet only a few centuries later he was known as the patron of hunters, and is a saint greatly honored in France and Belgium.

Saint Hubert lived a full life. He became bishop of Tongres and traveled through his huge diocese on horseback and by boat, preaching and building churches to the glory of God. He was the friend of the great of his day — Pepin of Heristal and Charles Martel among them — and also of the poor. In particular his heart went out to prisoners, and he would secretly place food for them before their dungeon windows. As he died he said to those about him, "Stretch the pallium over my mouth for I am now going to give back to God the soul I received from Him."

In parts of France and Belgium there has long been a custom of holding stag hunts on Saint Hubert's Day, and the hunters gather before the chase for Mass and the blessing of men and horses and dogs. After the hunt is over, those taking part gather for a bountiful breakfast consisting of fish, meat, salad, cheese, and dessert. Naturally the meat is venison of some sort, and the salad may well be one of dandelion greens.

Luke 14:1-6
On a Sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, "Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath or not?" But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them, "Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?" But they were unable to answer his question.

Introductory Prayer:
As I kneel before you today, I hear your voice echoing the words of your new commandment of love. I believe that this is the only true road to happiness. I also hope in your mercy and grace. I want to love you, Lord, and I delve deeper into the abyss of love in your Sacred Heart.

Petition:
Lord, in the midst of the flurry of activity of daily life, never allow me to forget the supreme importance of love.

1. Society’s Hierarchy of Values.  At times we can be so concerned about obeying the rules and regulations and fulfilling our obligations, that we forget to live the Christian virtue of charity. We all have our checklists to complete: carpools, shopping, phone calls, emails, checks and balances, etc. All of this is very important and necessary. Yet in the midst of all this activity, we also have to love. We need to open our eyes to see that the people around us are souls who God has providentially placed in our path. God’s greatest concern is that we touch these souls with charity, patience and kindness.

2. Jesus’ Hierarchy of Values.  Although Jesus was at the table for dinner, his main concern was the man in front of him suffering from dropsy. Jesus had completed a long day of preaching and healing and must have desired a break. Yet his love reigned over his passions, and he put his entire focus on service. What an example of self-giving! His Father came first; those around him came next; his personal desires and needs always came last.

3. We Will Be Judged on Our Love. At the end of our lives we will be asked about love: if we have loved or not. All our other achievements and everything else we have done will be seen in relation to the great fulfillment of the new commandment of brotherly love. What other achievements could be more important than love? Not medals, honors, public recognition, fame or glory. The whole purpose of prayer and the sacraments is to find the grace and strength to be able to love more, to love better and to stretch out our heart so that it be truly transformed into the heart of Christ!

Dialogue with Christ:
I want to love more, Lord Jesus. Open my eyes, and enlarge my heart. Help me to truly love you with more intensity and generosity.

Resolution:
I will choose one person in my life with whom I have some difficulty in my human relations, and I will come up with a practical plan for serving that person better.

Phil 1:1-11 / Lk 14:1-6

A young man was engaged to be married, but first he had to finish a year's contract in Spain. He was gone only a few weeks when his fiancée began to worry whether he was being true to her. His reply was absolute, "I never even look at another woman! ... Well, hardly ever," he muttered under his breath.

She was not reassured, and a package arrived soon after: "I'm sending you the enclosed harmonica," she wrote, "to help take your mind off all those girls." The young man wrote back that he was practicing the harmonica diligently every night and was thinking only of her.

Eventually the year was over. He flew home and the girl was waiting at the airport. He ran to her with arms outstretched, but she held up her hand: "Just a minute, please. First, let me hear you play that harmonica."

"Their words are bold, but their deeds are few." We hardly need to be reminded of that as the nation gears up for another seemingly endless election season! But before we hurl too many brickbats at our least favorite politicians, perhaps we should ask how we're doing on the same count: making our deeds match our words. A truthful answer is probably mezzo-mezzo.

Why is it that we lapse so easily into cheap talk? First of all, because it's not that easy to see the whole truth about ourselves. Just like the politicians we scorn, we like to believe our own press releases. And because of that we can be subjectively sincere and yet objectively hypocrites at the same time! It takes time and practice to learn how to look at ourselves with clear eyes. And it takes humility and a lot of trust in God to risk looking at ourselves thoroughly without hiding or running away.

And even when we see the truth about the mismatch between some of our words and deeds, we often face a further dilemma: What to do about it. It's not always so clear! But we mustn't hide in that cul de sac. God always has something to tell us, if we'll take enough time to listen attentively.

Finally, when at last we've seen the vacuum behind some of our words, and have seen what we need to do to fill those holes, there's still one more hurdle: Getting in gear and staying in gear till we're truly done.

None of this is easy, not the self-recognition, not the discerning of a wise course of action, and certainly not the faithful follow-through. We can't do it alone, and we can't do it with leftover time.

So if we're appalled at the self-deception we see in others and if we recognize that the same is a very real possibility for us too, we need a way out and we have a very simple one: Take time, a lot of it, in the presence of our Lord. He has lots to tell us, lots to show us, and best of all, He wants to help us get better. He wants that with all His very great heart.

So trust Him. Give Him some serious time. Listen to Him. And let Him help!

Philippians 1:1-11



Paul had great affection for the church at Philippi. He and his companions first visited there in response to a vision, making it the first European city ever to hear the gospel. In Philippi, Paul found open hearts in Lydia, a local cloth merchant, and her friends and household, all of whom he baptized. Though Paul met with resistance and persecution as well, the Lord even used that for good. His miraculous deliverance from prison—through an earthquake, no less!—actually resulted in the conversion of the jailer and his whole household as well. No wonder Paul had fond memories of this place!

Years later, as he sat in prison, Paul’s thoughts returned to this vibrant community of believers. How their faithfulness to God had brought him joy! He now wanted to encourage them just as they had been a source of strength to him. Thus was born this letter, an epistle that carries words of hope to all of us: I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

These words reveal a man who was living in humble surrender to his heavenly Father. God had revealed himself to Paul and given him knowledge and full insight (Philippians 1:9), and this became the basis for his trust and hope.

Brothers and sisters, God wants to do the same thing for us. He wants us to become convinced of his intention to bring to fulfillment everything that he has started in us. He wants to give us knowledge and insight so that we can choose to follow him and continue to receive his grace and revelation. He has given us the great gift of our intellect, our emotions, and our will so that we can draw closer to him and serve him with our whole hearts. By pondering his word in prayer, we can come to understand and experience just how reliable our God is.

So be assured: Time spent with God is never wasted. Paul’s confidence, the Philippians’ faithfulness, and our own experiences can prove that again and again and again.

Lord Jesus, complete your work in me! Make my love abound more and more with knowledge and discernment so that I will choose you in all things and bear fruit for your kingdom.
