Tomorrow we honor the greatest man who ever lived and celebrate the greatest event in human history!
But the evening before the great discovery at 10PM he briefly saw a light flicker in the distance. Still too far out to sea for it to have been a fire on shore.
I like to think it was an angel in the distance or even Our Lady - Columbus' Guide - beckoning him to the New World!
Christopher Columbus - proto-evangelist of the New World - pray for us!

Oh, man, is it Lost Italian day again?
I actually got laughed at when I paddled up into Avalon Bay and claimed Catalina in the name of the Pomo. Since the first guy I saw was pale, I decided to call the land 'Dolphin Underbelly' and the people 'Droppings.'
'course, it was just my luck, the dude that was standing there was Apache. He had pretty much the same idea as me, except his involved horses.

I don't think he "evangelized" so much as "massacred" and "exploited" the Arawak.

Should this really be posted under religion?

As I said Columbus is the Proto-Evangelist of the New World. He opened the way for the Gospel of Christ and His Church to be preached to the heathen inhabitants of the Americas who were mired in such satanic practices as human sacrifice and cannibalism!
So yes it should be posted here under religion!

Heard on Columbus's ship before landing:
First Mate: "I see Columbus, Ohio."
Christopher Columbus: "No, you meant 'I see Ohio, Columbus.'"

Look what good it did them. Your notion of what the Native-Americans were like is absurd. Columbus was their Satan.

Actually, the Caribe or "Cannab" Indians preferred Arawak for their main source of food.
From whence we get the term Cannabal.

And if he hadn't done it the Portugeese would have discovered America a few years later anyway.
And if the Indians had sailed East they would have found Europe or africa and sailed home with all those diseases also.

Amen to that! In our house it's been "Leif Ericson Day" for years, and we're not even Scandinavian! Isn't true that Columbus got the idea from old maps of the Vikings anyway?
The Indians hate Columbus but I don't recall them ever saying anything bad about Leif and his crew, and they raped, stole, and pillaged! (Has there been a Redskins/Vikings game?)
Columbus may have been seeking to spread the Church, but he was just as desirous of finding wealth, so you can't really call him pious. At least with the Norse, they never disguised what they were up to: looting & plundering & enjoying every minute of it.
Happy Leif Ericson Day!

Back in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Vatican's form of missionary work was somewhat similar to the Muslim form of it today. Many natives were burned at the stake or executed in other ways for not converting. Temples were razed and churches were constructed on top of their foundations.

With the early Vikings that raided most of Europe, rape and pillage were their way of saying "We come in peace". By the time the Vikings settled Greenland, most of them had converted to Christianity including Leif Erickson who was as I understand it, a missionary of sorts. His father Eric The Red never did convert.

Your point is? Columbus treated the Arawak just peachy and the other natives ate his flock out from under him?

You consider that to be a bad thing, especially in the case of the Aztecs?? No, I'm just not buying the "saint Christopher Columbus" nonsense and am comparing the for of missionary work back then to what we see the muslims doing today and for several centuries. My mention of building churches on top of temple foundations is very similar to what the muslims did to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

I don't buy your comparison, since in the case of the Temple Mount, a false religion was taking over, and in the case of the Aztecs, a false religion was being vanquished.
