I guess it's clear to all that the writer is the theological equivalent of Nancy Pelosi, from comments like "One could almost have had the impression that a few at the more conservative end of the spectrum were bending a little, though other statements from that quarter were notable for their rigidity" and mischaracterization of normalcy as "ultra-traditional."

And most of all, this: "Those at the progressive end were unfailingly polite in the face of some stark condemnations of their position and work, both implicit and explicit."

As though "those at the progressive end" have any right to take exception to those condemnations. As though, in fact, they have any right to do anything at all except renounce all authority, apologize for the harm they have done, and retire to a life of penance and contemplation.

For some reason I find it easier to refer to secular leftists as vile scum than I do to similarly criticize theological leftists. I'm not sure that reluctance is entirely justifiable.
