Rome reports indicate that the Holy See's International Theological Commission is examining the notion of limbo at a meeting this week and may be on the verge of scrapping it.
Ad Kronos International (AKI) reports that the Vatican reportedly appears set to abolish the Catholic tradition that holds that the souls of children who die before being baptised going to limbo.
Citing a report in Turin, Italy newspaper, La Stampa, AKI says that the issue is being discussed this weeke by the International Theological Commission, a body of Catholic theologians from around the world that advises the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
According to the 1904 catechism published by Pope St Pius X in 1904, "children who died without baptism go to the limbo where they do not enjoy God but don't suffer either as having the original sin, and only that, they do not deserve Paradise nor Hell or Purgatory".
The Church however has for a long time stopped referring to the concept Limbo and in 1984 theologian Joseph Ratzinger, elected Pope Benedict XVI in April last year, said that Limbo "was never a truth of the faith."
"I would let it drop as this has always only been a theological hypothesis," he said.
According to the Fathers of the Church, the concept limbo is that people who lived good lives but died before the Resurrection did not go to heaven, but rather had to wait for Christ to open the gates of heaven.
The term limbo does not appear in the Bible. In Holy Scripture, limbo is referred to as the term bosom of Abraham, appearing twice in it.
The bosom of Abraham represents the blissful state where the righteous dead await their eternal reward.
As such, this concept corresponds to the concept of limbo of the fathers in that it is neither heaven nor hell and the people there are waiting to enter paradise.

***Obviously, the ordinary means of salvation would involve being a Catholic.***
The only way to be saved is to believe in Christ Jesus.
Of course not.
Thank you. I have been so accused.
Now, if you came onto a Catholic thread and started belittling basic tenets of Catholicism in a very disrespectful way, it would be different.
Where's your proof that Catholics pray to the statues?
The statues are just paint and wood or plaster, which is inanimate and can do nothing. The Catholic Church specifically prohibits praying to images and statues.
The only time I attack them is when they belittle my beliefs. Then I attack with scripture. Even then I do not call names.
It's no different from holding a Bible or a Cross and praying.
Agreed.
This should be directed to someone else.
But apparently they cover this by suggesting that the one kneeling and bowing in front of the statue of Mary is actually praying to Mary for salvation and miracles and to be the mediator between God and man, who is in some other location...
But regardless of how you spin it, the Bible gives a fairly accurate example...
Act 19:27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at naught; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
Act 19:35 And when the town clerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
I don't care if you guys worship Mary, or pray 'thru' Mary, or get your salvation from Mary...That's your business...
But you guys know as well as anyone else that Jesus regarded his mother as just another sinner on the earth...I just wish you guys would stop trying to connect this Mary 'adoration' with the Biblical Christianity because it may be a Tradition in your church, but it's not biblical...
No cover-up; it's the truth. This is like us assuming that you are praying to the bed if you are kneeling next to it, or that you are praying to the Bible if you happen to be holding one durng prayer. Are you a Bible worshipper?
actually praying to Mary for salvation and miracles and to be the mediator between God and man
Salvation and miracles come from God, not Mary, who is an intercessor, not another mediator. Jesus is the only mediator between God and man.
But regardless of how you spin it
You are the one spinning Catholic belief, trying to make it into something it is not. Why do you feel it necessary for you to do so? Your whole most is full of falsehoods regarding Catholics and the Catholic Church.
Act 19:27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at naught; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
Diana was worshipped as a god, which is idolatry. Idolatry is not condoned by the Catholic Church.
Act 19:35 And when the town clerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
Diana was a false god and Catholics are prohibited from worshipping images. These two passages refute nothing about Catholicism.
Mary is a creature, just like humans. She needed salavation through Jesus as dies the rest of humanity. She is not a god.
Quit spinning Catholic belief. You do not know it and you do not understand it. You've been corrected before by others on this forum regarding how you are spinning Catholic belief. To keep spinning it as you do, after you've been corrected, is dishonest. Stop spinning and spend some time reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn authentic Catholic teaching and belief.
Yes, I know. The one it was supposed to be addressed to, kerryusama04, left the thread requested I not post to him anymore. But now it looks like he's back.
Sorry, somebody had to say it :)
as does the rest of humanity
Agreed.
just chillin like a villan on penicillon
with bob dylan. 5 out of 6, how sweet it
is.
You: And? Christianity as far as I know is the only religion that worships 3 divine entities (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) yet considers them paradoxically to be one God. Does that mean we're really polytheist?
FRiend, the first time the word "God" appears in the Bible is here:
Gen 1:1 In the beginning7225 God430 created1254a the heavens8064 and the earth776.
God is translated from the word Elohim:
H430 àìäéà'ĕlôhîym el-o-heem' Plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative: - angels, X exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.
So, you see, Hebrews, Jews, and Christians are actually polytheists. By using the plural, there are at least two Gods here.
What you folks do with your saints is specifically prohibited by scripture:
Exo 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. Exo 20:5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, Exo 20:6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
This was poorly worded and needs to be clarified. Mary is a creature, created just like the rest of us humans. Mary is human, not a god, and needed salvation.
