Yes, it is. But the longer acronym is more recognizable than "AT Machine" and "PI Number." I deal with that at work too, with a document called the "Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement", better known in the industry as a PICS Statement.
Silly me, thinking that the point of acronyms was to replace words ... it's really all about sounding geeky, isn't it!
