Silly me, thinking that the point of acronyms was to replace words ... it's really all about sounding geeky, isn't it!
Ummm... as a bona-fide geek I am at a loss here.
The purpose from my perspective is not to "sound geeky," it's to convey common concepts quickly.
It can go overboard, as I have discovered subsequent to my employer's acquisition by an international giant; a year and a half later I am still trying to memorize all the acronyms I encounter daily (or less frequently).
But it's still much faster to refer to a "PICS statement" than a "Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement," for all the trouble it causes newcomers. (One of my "classic" industry educational presentations refers to "PICS and BIBBs", with cartoon drawings of a hammer-head pick and a baby's bib.)
