DEFEATING DEPRESSION

PART 1

“Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad” Proverbs 12:25

Depression- from Webster’s New Unabridged Dictionary

Low spirits, gloominess, dejection, sadness, a decrease in force, or activity, or amount, a decrease in functional activity. An emotional condition either normal or pathological characterized by discouragement, a feeling of inadequacy, the act of humbling abasement as a depression of pride. Abasement, reduction, sinking, fall, humiliation, dejection, melancholy.

Major Depression Facts Major depression is the No.1 psychological disorder in the western world.(1) It is growing in all age groups, in virtually every community, and the growth is seen most in the young, especially teens. At the rate of increase, it will be the 2nd most disabling condition in the world by 2020, behind heart disease. http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/Depression_Information/facts.htm Shalom dearly beloved:

I am taking the opportunity this Shabbat to touch on a subject that is plaguing many people, that is DEPRESSION. Nearly everywhere that we go to minister, The Lord gives me a Word of Knowledge concerning depression and suicide. Many people have been miraculously set free from depression and hopelessness as we bring forth The MAP Revolution Message to the nations. Some times people that have suffered from over 50 years of chronic depression are able to smile and rejoice for the FIRST time in their lives!

One such case happened to us in Ecuador. As we were leaving from the Guayaquil airport after and intense time of ministry in Ecuador, some people came to bid us good-bye and among them there was a middle age toothless lady. She was smiling from ear to ear and had no front teeth at all!!! She made a considerable effort to come to the airport from a remote village and without any private transport. Her purpose for coming was to show us her “toothless smile” as a sign of appreciation for our ministry. She told us that she had suffered from chronic depression for over 50 years and that she was healed under our ministry and could now genuinely smile and be happy for the FIRST time in 50 years!!! Needless to say we were overjoyed and tears ran down our cheeks as we received this marvelous testimony as a gift from heaven and as full reward for our time spent in Ecuador. What a privilege it is to make people SMILE and rejoice from their hearts after so many years of suffering!

In one of our meetings in Mexico, as I was asking for people to give their testimonies of healing, a young man came to answer the altar call for salvation, tears streaming down his face as The Lord had healed him from depression right there on the spot. His testimony caused around 100 people to answer the altar call for salvation on that day! The lady that brought him to our meeting was HIS OWN CHRISTIAN THERAPIST that in desperation hoped for a miracle for her own patient! What medicine could not do, The Holy Spirit did it in a split second! To Him is all the glory forever!

I am not disclaiming in this article the use of drugs and medications in certain cases. Psychiatric help can be as a ¨life boat¨ to a drowning person. Many of my loved ones have been greatly helped by medication, however if you know the root cause of depression you can live a life of freedom from this plague that is a major attack on modern day man.

My own testimony It is in my weakness that YAH (The Lord) uses me in the area of depression as nearly every member of my immediate family has been plagued from depression and one even committed suicide due to it. I have suffered the deep distress of catering to people in serious, critical depressions and mental disease all my life. As I am writing these very lines my own son who is a soldier in the Israeli Army is suffering from depression that has been caused by pressure and anxiety. As a mother I am going through a very painful time, yet in the midst of my own pain I feel compelled to write this letter so that all those that are suffering from depression can receive HOPE and a WAY OUT!

The Factors that cause depression

A family curse that is repeated throughout the generations due to witchcraft, involvement in the occult, Kabbala and the active membership in secret lodges such as the Free Masons, Odd Fellows, etc…It can also manifest as a “genetical chemical imbalance” (Deuteronomy 5:8, 28:28,29) A root of bitterness, hidden anger and unforgiveness. (Matthew 18:34,35) Fear, anxiety and stress. (Proverbs 12:25, 1 John 4:18) A serious disappointment in life such as broken promises, divorce or a broken relationship, the death of a loved one or any frustrated expectation. “Hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Proverbs 13:12) Unresolved grief. (Genesis 37:34-36) Vitamin and nutritional deficiency

TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION 1. Repentance: In 2 Chronicles 7:14 we have the antidote for all sickness, be it spiritual, emotional or physical,

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

*Humility to recognize the need

*Prayer to seek YAH and inspect our hearts

*Turn from our wicked ways of mistrust, and fear rather than faith, disobedience to God’s Commandments and any unforgiveness and hidden anger. Forgiveness is a KEY issue, forgive yourself, others and even God!

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14,15

2. Confess your sins to someone you trust that has a holy walk with God and have that person pray for you.

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

3. Taking the Word of God as medication.

“He sent His word and healed them and delivered them from their destructions.” Psalms 107:20

“My son give attention to My word, incline your ear to my sayings do not let them depart from your eyes, keep them in the midst of your heart, for they are life to those who find them, and health to ALL their flesh” Proverbs 4:20-22

Make for yourself a Word Prayer of at least 5-7 scripture promises, declare and meditate on those scripture promises day and night and at least 3 times a day! Record this scripture prayer and listen to it while you are driving, speaking it out loud and also silently to yourself all day long.

4. Begin to obey God’s Commandments to you with no excuses.

“The work of righteousness will be peace and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever” Isaiah 32:17

I will paraphrase from the original Hebrew:

“The actions of those that are made just by doing what is right in the eyes of God will be shalom, wellbeing and wholeness in every way; And those who worship Him according to His Commandments (Holy Worship!) will be quietness and absolute confidence forever.”

The word RIGHTEOUS from the Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary

Right in wise manner, upright, virtuous, acting in a just way, morally right, good, excellent, satisfying, pleasant, authentic, Godly, just, upright, virtuous.

Our righteousness comes from having been made right with YAH (God) through Y’shua’s blood sacrifice and it is to be followed by obedience to His Commandments and by a right walk with Him. When we are made right with Elohim through Y’shua, in a forgiven state we then begin a personal walk with Him, a walk of loving obedience to His Commandments as written in our hearts by The Holy Spirit. (Jeremiah 31:31-33)

If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. John 15:10

Walking in love, obedience and forgiveness is an antidote for fear and thus fights and defeats the torment of depression.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18

5. Total trust in Elohim-God, His Word, His Plan and His Character. Trust is the antidote against anxiety, one of the major root causes of depression in the 21st century. Trust develops through continual prayer and meditation of the Word of God.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through the Messiah Y’shua. Philippians 4:6,7

This is actually a commandment- “Be anxious for NOTHING” and the way to achieve it is by,

Prayer, supplication and thanksgiving

Most people are anxious because they lead a prayer-less and unthankful life, so they are always revolving around themselves and their own problems.

6. Praise is an important KEY to release healing and the presence of YAH

You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Yahveh my God, I will give thanks to You forever. Psalm 30:11-12

7. Inner Healing is the key for inner soul and heart pain. Inner healing happens when we acknowledge the pain and let the Spirit of Truth and the Word of God bring light to the most hidden corners of our soul.

Then Y’shua said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31,32,

“The Spirit of Yahveh GOD is upon Me, Because Yahveh has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of Yahveh, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of Yahveh, that He may be glorified.” Isaiah 61:1-3.

Inner healing can happen when someone else prays for you or when you pray and let YAH work on your soul to bring truth and light to your deepest painful emotions.

8. Conventional treatment- In some cases there is a need to receive conventional medication and drug treatment before a person can be settled enough to allow for God’s word and spirit to work. In these cases by all means receive treatment and then apply all the rest.

9. Deliverance from demons- is an important part in defeating depression as in many cases there is demonic activity involved in depression, however depression is not only caused by evils spirits and it is important to treat spirit, soul and body!

Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. Matthew 4:24

10. Nutritional supplements are very important in order to treat depression and most particularly vitamin B complex and Vitamin C, however for a more thorough list consult with a professional nutritionist and health consultant. There are also some herbs that can be helpful such as St. John’s Wort, Chamomille, Valerian Root, etc…It is also important to change your nutritional habits to healthy habits decreasing white sugar, processed foods, chemicals such as nitrates and MSG.

For thus says Yahveh GOD, the Holy One of Israel: “ In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15A

On the next issue we will talk about fear and anxiety as a root cause of depression, meanwhile have a Shabbat Shalom, full of wellbeing and DO NOT GIVE UP! Remember that we love you and care for you.

Ramblings from the Cove...

September 2006

By Lars Gren

Elisabeth Elliot Gren and Lars Gren

Our first meeting was at Rumney conference center in New Hampshire where Elisabeth was speaking. Bunny mentioned it in a recent phone call, for that fact as with many others are hidden in the recesses of a memory which short circuits just before I grasp the sought after details. However I did remember why we initially had a little chat. She had been an avid reader of The Elisabeth Elliot Newsletter and had brought along her collection to show me and hoped that I would be able to fill in the missing issues. Eventually I was able to fill the request even to the inaugural issue. Through this we came to know each other a bit and then having common friends in the Portland ME area we would meet there or at her place for a meal or as one could say, “A happy time.”

Bunny is a single retired missionary, having been home now for some years after serving for thirty six years in The Congo with a Baptist mission. If you met her you would immediately be at ease. She is cheerful, good humored, interested in others, self-effacing, and I would guess that she has spent her life serving others while thanking the Lord for blessings received. It was while in The Congo that Bunny had her first of three bouts with cancer. The second appearance came before we knew her and the third came after she had moved from Portland.

A year or more ago she called us from Dexter, Maine where she had moved to be nearer her family to let us know that she was going through chemo treatments. She didn’t seem much different in spirit on the phone and always concerned about others she asked how we were getting along. For a number of years Bunny had been working on a book about her mission work mentioning now and then that there remained only a few chapters for its completion. Toward the end of our conversation I said that we would pray for her and Bunny’s response was, “I’m praying that the Lord will give me enough time to finish the book and perhaps throw in a few good extra days.” For me I think that it made it the most memorable prayer request I’ve ever heard. We pray that for Bunny, but I always feel funny for it seemed as an afterthought, Oh, by the way Lord, “Give her a few extra days and let them be good” But then that is what we all desire—just a few good extra days as we bundle up the cares of this life.

Last November we joined our Portland friends to drive to Camden where we were to meet Bunny for breakfast. Her chemo treatments were over for the time being and she was well enough to drive down from Dexter. She was her delightful self with her easy laughter during the leisurely buffet breakfast. We decided to return to our room and continue the conversation. After a bit, there was seriousness in her tone as she began to talk about her ordeals. “T he first time it was an operation where part of me was being hacked away but I walked out of there with joy and hope thinking that I would finish my book and be able to hand it out myself. Then the second bout came but I made it past the treatments. But when this latest reoccurrence came it was a dark period in my life. When they said, ‘Chemo’ I was scared but once the treatments began I took hope even though there was still a portion of despair.” These were somber moments as she spoke.

“No one knew and no one came around. It was lonely. I didn’t write in my journal for a month. The Bible sat on the table for two weeks without being read. I was not able to pick it up but it was precious to me and I was ashamed. Finding myself so, I picked it up and turned to 2 Cor.4:16-18 and read, ‘Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For the momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.’ That is what got me through the ordeal.”

The silence was palpable. Bunny told of her dark moments as though that should have never happened yet those few minuets seemed the best of the few hours that we had together. It was the opening up of the soul to others, so necessary at times yet so difficult, well at least to me it is. In a small way we were experiencing the trial with her as well as thinking of our own past.

One does not necessarily have to have a long life to have lived through dark moments. They do come to all of us in varying degrees and circumstances. At that point we have few options—deny the reality—accept it and decide that we can handle it—receive it not as our choice perhaps but as a gift from God in the knowledge that He is working out all things for our good. That in itself may not give understanding but as I have often heard Elisabeth say over the years, “Either we are at the mercy of chance or we are held in the everlasting arms.” There are no other options.

There are times when the entire arrangement of our existence is disrupted and we long then for just one ordinary day--seeing our ordinary life as greatly desirable, even wonderful, in the light of the terrible disruption that has taken place. Difficulty opens our eyes to pleasures we had taken for granted.

This is a terrible glorious truth, worthy of being wrestled with. Many thanks, Jocko, for the sharing.

Yes, it's very touching. I pinged you because I have often heard you say the same thing(s):

Yes, I have known times when that was true! And here's today's quote from quotemeal:

QUOTEMEAL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/

By means of art we are sometimes sent - dimly, briefly - revelations unattainable by reason. Like that little mirror in the fairy tales - look into it, and you will see not yourself but, for a moment, that which passeth understanding, a realm to which no man can ride or fly. And for which the soul begins to ache ...

STOP IN ORDER TO ADVANCE

Yom Hakippurim

Special Edition

The Day of Atonement

1-2 October 2006

Shabbat shalom dearly beloved:

“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of Yahveh honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, Then you shall delight yourself in Yahveh; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of Yahveh has spoken.” Isaiah 58:13,14

Yom Hakippurim, The Day of Atonement is the holiest day in The Hebrew calendar. It is called a “Shabbat of Shabbats”. Shabbat is the day of rest when we stop from all normal activities and fellowship with YAH (God) and with each other. Every Shabbat we are required to “Stop (or cease) from our own works and to enter into rest. We are also commanded to have a “Holy Convocation” that means a special gathering of believers to worship Yahveh. In Hebrew the word Shabbat means “to sit, to dwell or to go on strike” in other words to STOP “business as usual”.

And Yahveh spoke to Moses, saying: “Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to Yahveh. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before Yahveh your God. For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.” Leviticus 23:26-32

As we read the above scriptures about Yom Hakippurim, The Day of Atonement we notice that this is a STATUTE FOREVER so no man has the rights to cancel it. This day will continue being a Shabbat of Shabbats throughout our generations. We can clearly see that the emphasis is on halting, ceasing, stopping and afflicting. When we read in Hebrew about afflicting it always means FASTING. In this case the whole nation is called to prayer and fasting for an entire day beginning from the sunset of the 9th of Tishrei (the seventh month in the Biblical calendar) to sunset on the 10th of Tishrei. Just like we are required to STOP all activities besides prayer and worship, we are required to STOP eating and drinking. In other words all of our being is summoned into The Presence of Yahveh! It is so serious not to stop everything that the Word tells us that such person that does not heed to this commandment will be “cut off” or excommunicated from the People of Israel and with it from the Covenant Promises. So, Yom Hakippurim is a day to do a 24 hour prayer/worship watch unto The King of Kings. In Israel the whole country stops and there are no cars on the roads. The children go out on the streets with their skates and bicycles because there is no danger of being run over. All shops are closed and most of the people fast and spend most of the day in the synagogues in prayer and worship.

One of the main highlight of this Holy Feast is that contrary to all other Holy Feasts and Shabbats, there are no offerings to be brought to the Temple on this day. On normal Shabbat the priests are commanded to offer seven times more lambs but not on Yom Hakippurim. The only one that makes a sacrifice is the High Priest and He sacrifices first for Himself in order to be fit then to make the sacrifice for all the People of Israel. He, then enters into The Holy of Holiest for the first and only time in the year.

“And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering which is for himself. Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before Yahveh, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil. And he shall put the incense on the fire before Yahveh, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die. He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place , because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel , and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place , until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel . And he shall go out to the altar that is before Yahveh, and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. Then he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, cleanse it, and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel . Leviticus 16:11-19

Of course 2000 years ago Y’shua who became Israel ’s High Priest from the Order of Melchizedek offered His own blood as atonement on the altar and thus forever has cleansed the sins of those that put their trust in Him.

Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. Hebrews 7:25-27

Y’shua with one sacrifice cleansed us from sin and gave us a new life of holiness and righteousness. However many people do not understand the Gospel. For us to enter into Eternal Life through forgiveness of sins; WE MUST ENTER INTO YOM HAKIPPURIM. We must STOP everything! True salvation occurs when we stop our life as usual and humble ourselves before The Almighty, acknowledging that we have broken His commandments and we are in need of salvation. No salvation can occur unless we are cleansed and forgiven of our sins. The only way to be cleansed as instituted by the Creator Himself is by the offering of a perfect, unblemished sacrifice of a clean animal. (pigs would not be acceptable!) as mentioned in the Book of Leviticus. So, in order to obtain mercy we must,

STOP business as usual

ACKNOWLEDGE our own sins and transgressions

ASK for forgiveness

RECEIVE the Blood Sacrifice of Y’shua as the High Priest and the “sacrificial goat”

TURN from our rebellious and sinful ways

ARISE to new life in Him in a forgiven state

OBEY His Commandments

For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Y’shua the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:8-16

Y’shua fulfilled the role of the TWO GOATS

Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for Yahveh and the other lot for the scapegoat. Leviticus 16:8

Y’shua gave His blood and He became “THE ATONING GOAT” but He also took our sins upon Him and all the curse and the judgment that we deserved and He became “THE SCAPEGOAT”.

Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man. The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness. Leviticus 16:21, 22

Just as the Prophet Isaiah also says,

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

In Hebrew the words “Chastisement for our peace” means “the discipline and punishment so that we can be made whole was put on Him”. Just like the Yom Hakippurim scapegoat

And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says Yahveh: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Hebrews 10:11-17

The outcome of taking our sins away and fulfilling the role of “The Scapegoat” was so that His Commandments will be written in our hearts and we would walk as obedient sons and daughters to Our Father in Heaven. The outcome and results of the true Gospel “made in Zion ” and of true new birth and salvation is a RADICAL LIFESTYLE OF OBEDIENCE as a response to Y’shua becoming our High Priest as well as our Blood Sacrifice. A “supposed salvation” that does not lead to a radical lifestyle of obedience is not rooted in the true Gospel. Y’shua has SAVED US TO THE UTTERMOST. He has paid the highest price-His own Body and Blood in order to eradicate sin and death from our lives and RESTORE US to His image and likeness!

STOP EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW ! HAVE YOU BEEN SAVED TO THE UTTERMOST FROM SIN OR HAVE YOU RECEIVED A “PARTIAL SALVATION” AND YOU WALK ONLY A PARTIAL WALK ? THAT IS NOT THE TRUE GOSPEL!

STOP EVERYTHING TIME IS LATE AND RECEIVE THE TRUE GOSPEL AND THE TRUE JEWISH MESSIAH THAT PAID THE PRICE TO SAVE YOU FROM SIN TO THE UTTERMOST.

THERE IS NO ADVANCING WITHOUT STOPPING

May this Day of Atonement be one in which you ENTER INTO HIS REST COMPLETELY by stopping your own agendas and plans and by surrendering all the way to the ONE that has paid all the price for your radical transformation. We strongly suggest

that you separate Sunday sunset to Monday sunset for a day of TOTAL fasting, prayer and seeking that you may be able to ADVANCE into all His blessing and all His glory.

We love and care for you

Your friends in Israel

Your quotation from Alexander Solzhenitsyn brings to mind C.S. Lewis' testimony of a holy longing for the Other Garden, and how that ingraspable real desire eventually led him to all the Truth of God. I read a wonderful passage in Randy Alcorn's book Heaven this morning, and was wondering where I could share it (; This place seems appropriate! On pages 54-55 he quotes from his own previous book Safely Home, a fictionalized story of the same truths this non-fiction work on heaven illuminates:

Compared to what he now beheld, the world he'd come from was a land of shadows, colorless and two-dimensional. This place was fresh and captivating, resonating with color and beauty. He could not only see and hear it, but feel and smell and taste it. Every hillside, every mountain, every waterfall, every frolicking animal in the fields seemed to beckon him to come join them, to come from the outside and plunge into the inside. This whole world had the feel of cool water on a blistering August afternoon. The light beckoned him to dive in with abandon, to come join the great adventure.

"I know what this is," Quan said.

"Tell me," said the Carpenter.

"It's the substance that casts all those shadows in the other world. The circles there are copies of the spheres here. The squares there are copies of the cubes here. The triangles there are copies of the pyramids here. Earth was a flatland. This is...well, the inside is bigger than the outside, isn't it? How many dimensions are there?"

"Far more than you have seen yet," the King said, laughing.

"This is the Place that defines and gives meaning to all places," Li Quan said. "I never imagined it would be like this."

A Silly Love Story
By Craig von Buseck
CBN.com Ministries Director

CBN.com – A young man was walking through his village one morning on his way to see his fiancée. In his hand he held his father's yardstick and a moneybag holding three silver dollars. As he strolled into town, the local printer spied him and the yardstick. Inquisitively he asked, "My dear boy, where are you going with that stick in your hand?"

"It's not a stick," the young man replied, chuckling and wondering if the printer needed an eye examination. "Well, actually it is a stick of sorts … a yardstick to be exact," he said with a wide smile. "I'm going to measure the love that my fiancée has for me to see if I should go through with this marriage."

"A little nervous, eh?" the printer asked with a wink.

The young man looked down at the yardstick and twisted his face as he pondered the question. Though he was somewhat embarrassed to admit it, after a moment of thought he finally responded, "I guess so."

The printer laughed. "Everyone feels that way to a certain degree, my lad. But you can't measure love with a yard stick."

"You can't?" the young man exclaimed.

"No, no, no," the printer answered in the wisest of tones. "You must use a water table to measure a woman's love."

The young man had never heard of such a thing. But the printer was older and apparently wiser than he, so he asked, "Where can I find a water table?"

The printer had broken his yardstick the day before and had been too lazy to go to the mercantile to purchase a new one. He saw this as a way to avoid the trip and make a little money from the naïve youth. "I happen to have one that I can sell to you for one dollar and that ruler."

"Yardstick," the young man corrected.

"Whatever," the printer replied. "Are you interested?"

Without thinking, the young man pulled out his moneybag, gave the man one of his silver dollars and then handed over the yardstick. The printer flipped the coin in the air, caught it in his hand, and put it into the pocket of his apron. With a skip he entered the print shop and in only a moment emerged with a large glass jar, complete with markings on the side.

The youth was so mesmerized with the device that he didn't even ask the printer how to use it. He turned and joyfully ambled along Main Street staring at the large jar in his hands, joyful that he had found the true way to measure love. Snickering, the printer patted his apron pocket and sauntered back into his shop.

It was a wonderful spring morning and many people were out on the street, including old widow Parker, the town's best jam preserver. The woman was sweeping her front porch as the gentleman walked past. "Young man, young man," she called, tossing her straw broom aside and hurrying down the steps toward the street. "What is in that jar you're carrying there in your paws?"

"Oh, it's a water table," the man replied after adjusting his eyes to see who had summoned him. "I'm on my way to measure the love of my fiancée."

The old woman suddenly became very hospitable, sensing the smell of boondoggle in the air. "Well, don't you know that the U.S. commission on weights and measurements just revised the standards on regulation love measurement contraptions?"

"Noooo," the young man said in surprise.

"Yessss," the old woman said in response, her eyes wide with intrigue.

"You mean this won't…"

"Won't do you a darn bit of good in this country. Why, you couldn't measure a tick's wing on the back of a hound dog with that thing," the elderly woman declared, her hands just itching to pour boiled peaches into the jar.

The man's heart dropped and he slumped down on the old woman's front steps. "The printer must not have received the news," he said dejectedly. "What can I do?"

"There, there," old widow Parker said, patting the young man on the shoulder. "I can help you out…" her face brightened with a mischievous smile, "…if you have the price."

The man looked up with anticipation. "Anything! Name it."

And so, in exchange for a silver dollar and the glass jar the woman gave him an old bathroom scale. "Why, this is all dented," he exclaimed.

"It's last year's model," the woman replied as the screen door slammed behind her. "But it still works fine." With that she closed the large oak front door and pulled down the shade.

Undaunted, the man turned and walked down the stairs and back onto the street, happy that he would soon see his sweetheart and measure her love according to the United States government.

By now the sun was high in the sky and the town was full of activity. But the young man barely noticed the others on Main Street as he carefully examined the modern machine in his hands. As he strolled through town he passed Al's Antique Shop. Now Al, the proprietor of Al's Antique Shop, was a big, burly man, standing about 6 foot, 2 inches, and weighing somewhere in the vicinity of 275 pounds. The barrel-chested man chewed a day-old cigar as he peered out the window onto the street. Suddenly he spied the young man and the dented bathroom scale. With a crash the front door of his establishment burst open and Al flew out onto the street.

"Where in tarnation is you headed with that thar bathroom scale, my friend?" Al asked with a roar.

The crash of the door startled the young man and he almost dropped the precious measuring device. "I'm on my way to my fiancée's to determine her love for me," he replied, a little upset at being stopped yet again.

"Why, how are you gonna measure a woman's love with that thing?" Al asked between coughs and sputters.

"Well, old widow…"

The shrewd salesman cut in before the youth could utter a full sentence. Putting his big arm around the shoulder of the impressionable young man, he led him to the array of various items on display in front of the shop. "Let me show you the only magical, undeniable way of measuring a lassie's affection." The man wheezed as he bent over and picked up a single piece of clear glass cut the day before while replacing a broken window. "Here, my friend, is the newest, finest, most confidential way of finding the heart of a woman." Spying the confused look on the young man's face, the salesman elaborated, "It has even been tested by the United States Cavalry."

This caught the young man's attention. "The Cavalry, you say?" he asked putting the scale down and gingerly taking the glass from the salesman.

The corners of the antique dealer's smile slowly edged upward. "I can give it to you for the low, low price of one dollar and that hideous bathroom scale."

The young man was dumbfounded by the fantasy he saw before him. He dug deep into his moneybag and pulled out his final silver dollar. Grabbing the coin and the scale the businessman walked casually back into his shop, chewing now and then on his cigar.

"Oh sir," the young man poked his head into the antique store. "How does it work?"

"You just hold it up to the woman standing ten yards away," the salesman sputtered. "If you can see her through the glass, she loves you."

The young man tilted his head like a Golden Retriever looking at an unopened door, pondering the wonder of this device. After a moment he shrugged his shoulders and returned to the street.

As he arrived at the other end of town he turned off Main Street and onto the wooded path that led to his girlfriend's home. In the excitement of the moment, he began running up the narrow lane toward the house. But his foot got caught on the root of a tree and he tumbled to the ground, dropping the measuring glass and shattering it into tiny pieces.

"Undoubtedly this ruined the magical effect," he said aloud as he picked himself up from the ground and wiped the dirt from his jacket and pant legs. As he stood, he spied some daisies growing on the side of the path. "At least I can give her these," he pondered, "seeing that I spent all the money that I had intended to use for a present." He gently picked the flowers, making a bouquet with some other wildflowers and baby's breath that he found along the way.

As he neared the house, his fiancée saw him from her front porch and ran down the path to meet him. "I missed you so much," she cried as she threw her arms around him in an embrace. Sheepishly he held out the bouquet, which was now very beautiful with a large assortment of flowers. "Oh, they're gorgeous!" she exclaimed. Taking them in her hands she breathed in the lovely fragrance. "I love you!" she said with a smile, as she leaned forward to kiss him on the cheek. "Come on, let's go put them in some water!"

She took hold of his hand and the young couple raced up the path and back toward the house. As he followed his fiancée down the path and up the stairs into the house, suddenly the young man realized what he had known deep down all along. You don't need a yardstick, or a water table, or a scale, or a magical glass to measure someone's love. If a person loves you, you'll know it in your heart!

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails… (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a NASB).

Tomorrow morning," the surgeon began,

"I'll open up your heart..."

"You'll find Jesus there," the boy

interrupted.

The surgeon looked up, annoyed

"I'll cut your heart open," he continued,

to see how much damage has been

done..."

"But when you open up my heart, you'll

find Jesus in there," said the boy.

The surgeon looked to the parents, who

sat quietly.

"When I see how much

damage has been done, I'll sew your

heart and chest back up, and I'll plan

what to do next."

"But you'll find Jesus in my heart. The

Bible says He lives there. The

hymns all say He lives there. You'll

find Him in my heart."

The surgeon had had enough.

"I'll tell

you what I'll find in your heart.

I'll find damaged muscle, low blood

supply, and weakened vessels.

And I'll find out if I can make you well."

"You'll find Jesus there too.

He lives there."

The surgeon left.

The surgeon sat in his office, recording his

notes from the surgery, " ... damaged aorta, damaged

pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration.

No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy:

painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis:,"

here he paused,

"death within one year."

He stopped the recorder, but there was

more to be said. "Why?" he asked aloud.

"Why did You do this? You've put

him here; You've put him in this pain; and

You've cursed him to an early death. Why?"

The Lord answered and said, "The boy,

My lamb, was not meant for your

flock for long, for he is a part of My

flock, and will forever be.

here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and

will be comforted as you cannot imagine.

His parents will one day join him here,

and they will know peace, and

My flock will continue to grow."

The surgeon's tears were hot, but his

anger was hotter. "You created that

boy, and You created that heart.

He'll be dead in months. Why?"

The Lord answered, "The boy, My lamb,

shall return to My flock, for He has

done his duty: I did not put My lamb

with your flock to lose him,

but to use him to retrieve another

lost lamb."

The surgeon wept.. The surgeon sat

beside the boy's bed; the boy's

parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and

whispered, "Did you cut open my heart?"

"Yes," said the surgeon.

"What did you find?" asked the boy.

"I found Jesus there," said the

surgeon.

There Is No Other Way

In order to get to a place called Laity Lodge in Texas you have to drive into a riverbed. The road takes you down a steep, rocky hill into a canyon and straight into the water. There is a sign at the water's edge which says, "Yes. You drive in the river."

One who has made up his mind to go to the uttermost with God will come to a place as unexpected and perhaps looking as impossible to travel as that riverbed looks. He may glance around for an alternative route, but if he wants what God promises His faithful ones, he must go straight into the danger. There is no other way.

The written word is our direction. Trust it. Obey it. Drive in the river and get to Laity Lodge. Moses said to Israel, "I offer you the choice of life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life and then you and your descendants will live; love the Lord your God, obey him, and hold fast to him: that is life for you."

When you take the risk of obedience, you find solid rock beneath you--and markers, evidence that someone has traveled this route before. "The Lord your God will cross over at your head... he will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not be discouraged or afraid" (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20; 31:3, 8, NEB). It's what the old gospel song puts so simply:

"Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.

The Greatest Calling

Genesis 12:1-3

Now the Lord had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, from your kindred and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

The Greatest Calling

An oil company needed a suave public relations man for its office in Asia. After interviewing several candidates, the officials decided to ask a local missionary to take the position. Company executives met with this man of unusual gifts. Whatever they proposed, however, his answer was always "no." "What’s wrong?" asked one interviewer. "Isn’t the salary big enough?" The missionary replied, "The salary is big enough, but the job isn’t."

Abraham was faced with a similar option. He could have stayed in Haran and become a leading citizen. As a natural-born leader, he may have become ruler of the city. Most certainly, as a clever businessman, he would have become wealthy and lived in luxury and ease. But all that was insignificant compared to what God had in mind for him. By obeying God’s call, he became a blessing to the whole world.

God still calls people today. Maybe He is calling you to be a pastor or missionary or church leader. On the other hand, He may be calling you to be an active witness for Him in your place of secular employment. But you also may be facing alternatives. Another position may offer a bigger salary, a bigger office or less hassle. Don’t be fooled. Seek God’s direction. Wherever He is calling you will bring the greatest blessing—to you and to those around you.

When God calls, accepting anything else is no bargain.
