Aug. 09 (CNA/CWNews.com) - As the world awaits news on the condition of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, Archbishop Giulio Einaudi (pictured right), who was apostolic nuncio in Cuba from 1980 to 1988, said this week that a political transition could take place on the island nation without recourse to violence.
Commentary. Next to the all-pervading institutions and mass-organizations of the Communist Party of Cuba, the only independent group in that Island able to help maintain social peace and cohesion during the transition to a more liberal regime. The Church in Cuba is walking on eggshells as it is, and cannot give any appearance that Castro may immediately misconstrue as aiding and abbeting the U.S. or any other of his enemies, either real or imagined.
The Church is critical to a peaceful transition in Cuba. Cuban church authorities know it, and Castro knows it, otherwise he wouldn't have somewhat relaxed his grip upon the Church after Pope John Paul the Great's visit to that suffering land back in 1998. Let's keep our prayers up for a peaceful transition in Cuba and for a new dawn of freedom in that island-nation.
