Holmes, you astound me.

Or rather, "duh."

When will we stop underestimating the effects of the media?

It'd be wrong simply to blame song lyrics, however. I'd say it's probably far more correct to blame the overarching (and degraded) popular culture ... of which the song lyrics are merely an indicator, not a cause.

Teens whose iPods are full of music with raunchy, sexual lyrics start having sex sooner than those who prefer other songs, a study found.

Man, the sheer retardation in media and academia never ceases to astound me. Repeat after me: "Correlation is not causality."

It's much more likely that kids who start having sex sooner like to listen to raunchy lyrics, rather than the other way around. Do you seriously think kids' behavior is driven by lyrics? Good God.

Not just the lyrics.

I'd imagine the rap and hip-hop videos that show bikini-clad sluts mindlessly grinding their backsides into the crotches of the "playas" may have a teensy effect as well.

Show humans acting like animals...don't be surprised when people start acting like animals.

The problem with blaming the lyrics per se is that they are nothing new. Go back into traditional folk music or even some of the more formal music from at least the English Restoration to the mid 19th century and there is material in there that's on par with anything heard today -- and some that would make a gangsta rapper blush.

Might it not be possible that teens most likely to have sex are drawn to these lyrics, rather than the lyrics causing the kids to have sex?

It's hard to say. Explicit lyrics are allowed because our culture allows it these days, where as in times past it didn't. This is a problem that a strong family unit and a community of good moral character could deal with. The problem is, the community's good moral character is AWOL.

Benjamin Chavis, chief executive officer of the Hip-Hip Summit Action Network, a coalition of hip-hop musicians and recording industry executives, said explicit music lyrics are a cultural expression that reflect "social and economic realities."

Huh?

I’m going to consolidate my reply to everyone who takes some version of the “Man, the sheer retardation in media and academia never ceases to astound me. Repeat after me: "Correlation is not causality." position.

I continue to be astounded by the sheer, obdurate, blindness of those who refuse to see causality where it clearly exists. In my opinion, they refuse to see it because they have an emotional attachment to popular music, together with the knee-jerk terror of “censorship” fostered by the left over the past several decades.

The lyrics are clearly not the only factor; however, they are definitely one of the major factors. Spend all your time on Egypt’s biggest river if you like, those whose eyes are open can see the clear cause-and-effect relationship.

“I think there’s no doubt that music is a great emotional companion, and when you introduce words into a person’s psyche with all the emotion that music can bring, you’re affecting the human condition.” (Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary, speaking of the power of music in reference to the musical preferences of the Columbine killers)

I was a teen-ager myself, once, and I clearly remember the disproportionate importance that music assumed, and the disproportionate influence its purveyors commanded.
