Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday appealed for an immediate cease-fire in the Middle East.

"In the name of God, I appeal to all those responsible for this spiral of violence, so that they immediately put down their arms on all sides," the pope told faithful at his summer residence on the outskirts of Rome. He stressed the word "immediately."

The Pope needs to stay out of the fray!

He's a great man - but he really needs to butt out, this time.

The pope can plead from his golden, guilded perch. Let him put his money where his mouth is and give the vatican's gold to the poor.

Got a better idea for Pope Benedict XVI:

Tell Israel that their Messiah is in fact Jesus Christ, the One they crucified upon the Cross, and that until they collectively confess Him as the Son of God, they will have no peace, and no security, and that He is returning SOON.

At the same time, a papal statement that Islam is a satanic death cult and opposed to all things Godly would be a nice way of stating the Truth.

Oh but of course, all of that would be SO politically incorrect, now wouldn't it?

As long as the Pope is calling for peace and generally condemning violence WITHOUT taking side then I see him as just "doing his job". If he called for the faithful to pray etc I see no problem and no, I'm not Catholic.

The Pope seems unaware he is public enemy number one of those he is trying to protect.

I think he is probably most concerned about the Christians in Lebanon and I really doubt that they consider the Pope "public enemy number one".

I guess he joins Condoleeza Rice in calling for a cease fire now.

He may as well be calling for candy-canes and gumdrops to be falling from the sky. I kind of doubt hezbollah is listening and will suddenly say: "Hokay boyz, the jig is up!"

It's a nice sentiment, it's his job as Pope to pray for peace, but this situation will take a bit more "hands on" effort for peace to come.

That being said, I really like and respect this Pope a great deal.

I think he is probably concerned with all in Lebanon and is just doing what he thinks is appropriate for a man of God in his position. However, as is often the case with good intentions, he is wrong and if his declaration were followed it would kill and maim even more people in the future. His attempt to help, hurts.

would you feel the same if it was Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson or the head of the Southern Baptist that was calling for an immediate cease fire. Calling for prayer is one thing, when in fact it is commanded for Christians to pray for Israel, but to demand for a cease fire is another.

Yet another ill informed anti-catholic comment without substance.......

The head of the catholic church as well as the heads of all other Christian religions, preach peace and that all sides lay down their weapons regardless of the conflict....

What's the alternative, preach war? Hardly...

At times...

What might have been the outcome if religious leaders including the pope had called for concerted military action in response to the entry of Nazi forces into the Rhineland, or Czechoslovakia? What peace might have resulted, had religious leaders been more like Bonhoffer and Niemoller than Pius?

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew...

What if scenarios are so much fun.....

The church, it's leaders and clergy would have been immediately targeted by the Nazi regime and any influence the Church had and leveraged during WWII would have been immediately negated.

The outcome of the war, it's length and voracity would have remained unchanged except for the hundreds of thousands that were saved by the actions of many clergy since they were viewed as non-combatants and a "honest" broker of peace.

Try again........

Exactly. The 9th Century knuckledraggers first plan to destroy Israel and then move on to Vatican City.

Contary to what he implies, there's no moral equality between Hezbollah and Israel. ...or between Hezbollah's bosses (Iran, Syria--all) and Israel. And he shouldn't be using The Name so trivially and wrongfully.
