It chronicles the warrior-monks but also made the point that the Crusades (except for the 3rd one--I think) were genuine efforts to retake the centuries held-Christian lands, the Holy Land.
Too bad they didn't continue the Crusades. It is now, as ever, it seems, overrun with war, death, religious acrimony, hatred and endless strife....but NOT involving Christians -- still a religion of peace.
Imho, both sides over there will NEVER, ever, ever give up the war and hatred. One side has everything to lose; the other has nothing to lose.
God will have to end it when He ends Earth's human existence. It won't end before that, no matter how much we Americans side with one group and blame another. There isn't enough prayer in existence to cover THAT conflict.
We lost the Crusades because the West had the same problem it's having now -- people stabbing good men (like Richard Coeur the Lion and Bush) in the back. The Viennese and the Genoese and the Byzantines fought amongst each other giving Salauddin's army the ability to retake all of the Crusader states.
