That sneaky desperate Catholic Church is at it again
American Papist ^ | July 22, 2006 | Thomas

... or so claims the Washington Post:

Trying to Hook More Youths on Priesthood

In this era of Eminem and Britney Spears, of sexy sitcoms and sexier commercials, of high-speed Internet and instant gratification, a life of celibacy devoted to God can be a hard sell to a teenager.

So as the nation's Roman Catholic leaders gathered recently and watched a video called "Fishers of Men," designed to draw young men to the priesthood, they had good reason to worry about the future of their chosen way of life.

Church leaders have long been aware of the statistics. There are now about 43,000 Catholic priests in America, down from more than 58,000 in 1965. As the U.S. Catholic population has risen to about 70 million, more churches have had to share priests.

What receives less attention is that the men who go into the seminary generally don't do so until later in life. The average age of newly ordained priests was 36 last year, up from 28 in the 1960s and 26 in the 1940s.

...

Observers of vocational trends say more effort is needed now because of smaller families, with parents who want grandchildren; a secularized culture wary of lifetime commitment and celibacy; Catholic assimilation in America; and increased family mobility, which detracts from parish loyalties. Aw dang, Jeff, you caught us red-handed!

King James quoting first Timothy 3:4:

"One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;" referring Titus 1:6

"If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly."

Dear marajade,

You haven't backed up anything except with a personal interpretation of a single verse mired in logical fallacies.

Only a bishop can establish a church, so thanks for proving the point.

It's ironic that one who engages in personal interpretation of Scripture would cite 2 Pet 1:20 against one who accepts the everlasting interpretation of Scriptures given by the successors of the Apostles, themselves.

First, that language does not say he must have children, it says that his children must be in subjection and chastity.

Secondly, does your KJV say that First Timothy was written by Timothy?

I don't care who authored it, Timothy or Paul whoever. Are you arguing with the letters?

I'm arguing with your faulty interpretation of it. You're adding to the language, or changing it completely.

No, elders who are elected and represent the church appoint the bishop of the Church.

Have any of you even bothered to read the Bible for yourself or do you just believe what some priest says from the pulpit?

Dear marajade,

"I never said that. I'm quoting First Timothy which was authored by Timothy."

What? Here is the opening of the first letter of Paul to Timothy:

"1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 to Timothy, my true child in faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord."

St. Paul wrote the letters to St. Timothy. St. Timothy did not write the first epistle to Timothy. Or the second.

Perhaps you should take a break from posting so that you might have the opportunity to learn a little more about the Bible.

Faulty interpretation. Again read 2nd Peter 1:20.

It seems I read the Bible and believe what it says, you don't. That's the diff.

I don't care who authored what. The Word is the inspired word of God. I read what it says and believe it, you don't.

Dear marajade,

"Have any of you even bothered to read the Bible for yourself or do you just believe what some priest says from the pulpit?"

I've read the Bible often enough that I know who actually wrote the first epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy.

Get back to me when you've taken the time to get some this stuff straightened out in your head.

Have you read the Book of Timothy?

Assuming you mean the 1st letter of St. Paul to Timothy, yes. I'm addressing your interpretation of 1 Tim. 3:2 ff. My argument depends only upon its words and a simple application of logic.

Have you read the 7th chapter of 1st Corinthians?

It seems I read the Bible . . . . and made multiple, demonstrable, laughable misinterpretations, all in a quest to attack the Roman Catholic Church.

Is the 7th chapter of Corinthians about the qualifications of being a bishop?

I wonder if we're wasting our time here.

As a justice of the Georgia Supreme Court once said, it's like trying to nail a jellyfish to the wall.
