Hmmmmm. The Night of the Long Knives in the Episcopal Church is probably upon us.
Clarification for everyone: This would be a California lawsuit, presumably to keep San Joaquin from leaving with any property, etc. Im sure well see more in the near future, as +Bruno made a quasi-public anouncement about this. Everyone should also know that things are about to get even worse for conservatives - the revisionist agenda is not backing down and will be coming after traditionalists with a vengence. +Bruno will be leading the charge, despite his earlier overtures toward reconciliation. Apparently, the parishes that left with their properties really burned his butt pretty good.
Further clarification: +Bruno made an announcement about this lawsuit at a gathering of his clergy to discuss GC2006. That is all I can say, and I have this from an eye-witness.
TOPICS: Mainline Protestant
KEYWORDS:
[The comments are an "interesting" read, to wit: I hope it is not more than just property. Bishop Schofields health has been on a decline the past few years with even heart problems. Too much stress could eliminate a bishop and both of these other bishops know this. Bishop Schofield has been in and out of the hospital. Bruno and Swing have voiced an almost hatred of Schofield for a long time. I truly hope all it is is property. They may want to carve up the diocese back under them.
Michaela
I know +Schofield, and I know his health has been quite poor. I bid your prayers for him, especially if this rumor proves true. --sionnsar]

We knew it would get ugly, but this ugly . . . < shudder > Please, AAM, I beg your prayers for Bishop John-David Schofield. He and I are from opposite sides of the church (he's quite evangelical, I'm out on the anglo-catholic wing), but a kinder, more gentle spirit you're not likely to find -- especially in a bishop. The condition he was in when I last saw him, this could become nasty enough to be fatal.

Thus far Bruno has uniformly lost in the California courts. I would think he would have even less ability to stop another diocese from leaving (presuming the parishes in that diocese agree). If the precedent is established in California that parishes can leave, Bruno et al can be held liable for exemplary or punitive damages for filing frivolous lawsuits.

His Master may be holding him liable for much worse than that.
Do any of these people think about what will be happening after their death? Yes, the Lord loves us more than we can imagine, however he also expect us to "be perfect even as your Father is heaven is perfect". Did that verse get reinterpreted also?

Prayers going up for Bishop Schofield. He's a wonderful man & a faithful shepherd to Christ's sheep. I have no doubt that he would be a willing martyr to the Faith. One can only pray that it isn't in God's plan.

His Master may be holding him liable for much worse than that. Jeremiah 23:1-4
1 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says Yahweh.
2 Therefore thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who feed my people: You have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them; behold, I will visit on you the evil of your doings, says Yahweh.
3 I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and multiply.
4 I will set up shepherds over them, who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be lacking, says Yahweh.

Oh, dear! Prayers definitely, with fervour. I don't care if he's the most evangelical bishop who ever thumped a pulpit, no good man deserves to be persecuted in this way.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the divine power of God, cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Do you have any idea what Bruno's suit might be?

No - I don't understand how it can be a lawsuit seeking the property, because California law is crystal clear on that point. The only distinction is that this is a bishop instead of a parish - and as long as his parishes are agreed, I don't see how there can be a problem over the property.
If it's a presentment, I have no idea how that works -- although I suppose Bishop Schofield could appeal to Canterbury. Although that hasn't worked very well up to now - that supposed Panel of Reference has done zilch with previous appeals for help.

If it is presentment, then it'll be interesting to see how the vote goes. Mother Schori hinted at punitive action against "those behaving badly". There's the Righer trial as reference. IIRC, at the 2003 GC, there was public apology for that mess to Righter.

But why should Bp Schofield have to go through all this harassment? Righter wasn't an old man in frail health.
I swear that it begins to occur to me that these people are positively demonic in their motivations.
