Indeed, if we were to find fault with either rite from the standpoint of our present query, it would have to be said that
it is actually the Traditional Mass, not the Novus Ordo, which turns out to be rather too soft on Hell.

Try reading Abp. Bugnini's "Reform of the Liturgy." In it, he specifically says penitential prayers were removed if they didn't agree with modern sensibilities.
