In February 2006, an illustrated slide lecture on icons and iconography was given by Dr. Irina Iazykova at the inaugural meeting of the Anglican-Orthodox Educational Centre, operated from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Moscow. One of her students, Julia Melnikova, kindly did the translation and obtained permission Dr. Iazykova to publish it here. Ms. Melnikova is a student at the Biblical-Theological Institute in Moscow (or BBI), the library of which is also currently housed in St. Andrew’s with the help of a grant from the Society of St. Alban and St. Sergius. I am informed that that “the target audience was the proverbial educated layman, and in particular Anglicans with a limited idea (if any) of what icons mean to the Orthodox.”
Dr. Iazykova teaches at the BBI (and elsewhere) and is the author of two works on the subject of icons, including Se tvoru vse novoye: ikona v XX veke (Behold I make all things new: icons in the twentieth century) ...

We have an "icon-style" picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in our dining room. It's kind of a trans-cultural goof, since the Sacred Heart devotion is Western European!
It's pretty, though, and we also have St. Thomas the Apostle in our sons' room - gave it to our son Thomas for his First Communion present. In spite of the "global community," I don't suppose there's an icon of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson :-).

Oh, I don't know. There's some loonie, syncretist Franciscan "iconographer" named Lentz who has made "icons" of all kinds of people...MLK springs to mind as does Einstein. If you want something to get the blood boiling, look at this:

I was brought up Presbyterian. General Jackson's Da Man! (Other Catholics seem to have problems with him as a Patron Saint, though. Funny about that ...)

Oh, I see, you mean the "iconographer." The U.S. Bishops wouldn't touch General Jackson with a 30-foot pole; he was a *gasp* slaveholder! (shudder). Goofballs.
My goodness, what weirdness! Tolkien? Thomas Merton? And what's Bl. Charles de Foucauld doing so old? He was martyred in his early 50's.
No Lee, no Jackson ... I'm surprised not to see Sojourner Truth or Harriet Tubman, though!
Astonishing, isn't it! And this clown is trumpeted as a great Roman Catholic iconographer. I could see ECUSA promoting this heretic, but the Latin Church? Well, like I said, we all have our nutcases and we certainly all have our heretics!
There are beetles in every church, no doubt! The Franciscans seem to attract them, too.
