Knights of Columbus Donates $8 Million to Catholic University

The Knights of Columbus will provide an $8 million grant to The Catholic University of America (CUA) for the renovation of a prominent building on the university’s campus. The announcement was made April 28 by CUA president Father David M. O’Connell C.M., during the annual American Cardinals Dinner in Washington. The donation, which is the largest the Order has ever made to the university, will be used to renovate Keane Hall, a 35,000-square-foot limestone building located on CUA’s central mall. Built in 1958, the modern-classical structure was the university’s original physics research facility.

Renovations are expected to last two years. Once completed, the building will be renamed McGivney Hall in honor of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. McGivney Hall will serve as the new home for the North American campus of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, a graduate school of theology affiliated with the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome as well as CUA. It currently occupies administrative and classroom space at CUA’s national seminary, Theological College, across Michigan Avenue from the main campus.

“The Knights of Columbus enjoys a long and well-regarded relationship with Catholic University,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, who is a member of CUA’s board of trustees and the vice president of the John Paul II Institute. “In keeping with that relationship, as well as with the Order’s desire to support and promote Catholic higher education, I am pleased to make this grant on behalf of our 1.7 million Knights and their families, and I share Father O’Connell’s confidence that it will enhance the mission of Catholic University and the Pope John Paul II Institute for many years to come.”

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest lay Catholic organization with members in North America, Asia and Europe. The Order contributed more than 63 million hours and $135 million to charity last year. As a graduate of CUA and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, I view this as wasted money.

Did you make that comment because CUA is highly liberal ?

Or did you make that comment for some other reason.

let me know.

According to friends who have sent kids there in the last four or five years, the University has turn around some of the liberal stupidity it had developed over the previous 20 years or so.

Dear warriorforourlady,

I made the comment for a variety of reasons. One of them is that I didn't find the Catholicity of CUA to be overwhelming during my tenure there. However, I'm being a little unfair in that: 1) CUA was never as bad as some other "Catholic" colleges and; 2) I've been told it has improved significantly in the 2+ decades since I graduated.

Hmmm - I just today read something about the KofC and Opus Dei, both dependent on the Pope, are in competition - and Opus Dei may be gaining the upper hand....

pay off?

Dear SuziQ,

I have a friend who is a professor at CUA who affirms that things are improving, although things are better in some departments than others. Regrettably, theology lags.

Yeah, that's the Dept. with the most problems at Notre Dame, too. Unfortunately, it has trained Religious Ed. directors all over the country. Here in MA we have the problem of Rel. Ed. folks who graduated from Boston College in Theology. They are also kinda squishy in their beliefs.

My daughter graduated from CUA in 2003. They would not allow pro-abortion speakers on campus and the student health department would not prescribe contraception. I think that the university was making a concerted effort to be faithful to Catholic teaching.

My daughter turned out to be an agnostic flaming liberal anyway. :-(

Dear k omalley,

"My daughter turned out to be an agnostic flaming liberal anyway. :-("

For now.

There are plenty of years for the power of a mother's prayer to work its way on her.

Is this before or after Britney Spears' space alien baby takes over the world?

Then why would Opus Dei let a Knights of Columbus council meet in the Catholic Information Center in DC, which they run? ;-)

Shhh! That's part of the conspiracy!

That, and Britney's alien love child.

Seriously, I've learned from FR in the past couple of days that the Jesuits hate Opus Dei, that Opus Dei is currying favor with Rome so they can "take over" for the Legionaries of Christ ("take over" what?), and now that Opus Dei is in competition with the Knights of Columbus.

The truth is that Opus Dei is locked in mortal combat with Girl Scout troop 1191 from St. Patrick's Catholic Church in East Liverpool, Ohio. THis is top secret. If you tell anyone, I'll have "Silas" pay you a visit.

Why don’t they just cut out the middle man and contribute it to the 2012 Kerry Campaign?

I didn’t say CUA was traditional, but the friends whose kids went there are, and they were pretty pleased with the school.
