The Episcopal Church will claim that the election of a straight man as the next bishop of the Diocese of California (San Fransisco) is a victory for the church that proved compliance with the Windsor Report. It's not, of course. Bishop-elect Andrus is no defender of the faith.
Christopher Johnson Midwest Conservative Journal comments that "Andrus would have to swing hard to the right to be considered a moderate." (Good one Chris.)
Integrity is elated at Andrus' election. Their post-election press release (pdf file) opens with "Integrity President Susan Russell said: 'Bishop Andrus is a long-time Integrity ally and will bring his support for the full inclusion of LGBT people in the life of the church to his ministry in California.' "
The AAC tells it like it is, stating "This election has garnered international attention in light of the fact that three partnered homosexuals were nominated, . . . , demonstrating defiance of the mind of the Anglican Communion on human sexuality. None of the seven candidates has indicated intentions to declare and implement a moratorium on same-sex blessings or pledged to withhold consent for same-sex partnered individuals as bishop; none has committed to uphold Lambeth 1.10 within the diocese or as a member of the House of Bishops."
On towards making fudge in Columbus?
ACN Moderator, Bishop Bob Duncan writes, "I am grateful to electing deputies of the Diocese of California for not attempting to short-circuit the decisions the Episcopal Church must make this June about walking with or apart from the Anglican Communion. The world church has clearly told us what we must do to stay in communion: Repent of our decision in 2003 to confirm the election of a bishop in a same-sex partnered relationship and place moratoriums on further elections of bishops in same-sex partnered relationships as well as the blessing of same sex relationships. Our very claim to be 'Anglican' remains in jeopardy and we have yet to clearly respond. General Convention 2006 is likely our last chance to do so."
It's a sign of the times that an Episcopal bishop's sexuality has become the most important thing about him and that the headline "Episcopalians Elect Straight Man Bishop" is not redundant but newsworthy. The camel's nose is not just under the tent - the camel has taken over the tent and the people are sleeping outside.
I really don't understand why conservative Episcopalians (a term which has become more and more oxymoronic with each passing year) don't just vote with their feet and leave.
Another "fudge" reference....LOL
