The biggest problem, and it's not just the question concering Mary (or all two or three or however you want to look at it), is that we are reading a translation of a translation of a translation that's been heavily edited, and much of which was written from second, third, fourth, etc. hand accounts.
It would be great to read and speak Aramaic, Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, but unfortunately, most of us don't have the time and energy to expend on that.

My understanding is that there are about 500 copies of the New Testament dating from around the fifth century, all of which are in substantial agreement.
