The Last Word!

Mark 16:15-20
Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

Introductory Prayer: Again I come to you, Lord, to listen to your words, to open my heart and soul to you, to give you the time you need to communicate with me. I am not setting aside this time as an escape, but to be strengthened for the mission. “To pray is not to escape from history and the problems which it presents”(Pope John Paul II, Address to the Representatives of the World Religions, January 24, 2002). Help me to reflect with faith, hope and love on your final words to those of us who would put our shoulder to the task of continuing your work in this world.

Petition: Lord, make me an instrument of your Kingdom.

1. Go! When it comes to the selfless work of the Kingdom, many times our body is tired and says, “Stop”. Our human respect is tender and says, “Stop”. Our pride and self-centeredness is hungry and says, “Stop.” But Christ’s last recorded words resound in our heart and soul down the centuries saying instead, “Go!” Go out into the entire world and proclaim the good news. Go out of yourself; go out of your sensuality, your vanity and your pride. Love gives as much as it can! Lord, give me this love!

2. Baptize! We may not have a lot of opportunities to baptize others or be responsible for another’s baptism. But every day we have the chance to help the baptized live their baptismal commitments, renounce sin and believe in love. So often those who are baptized have forgotten what this means for them. So often we lose the sense of direction that baptism gives to our lives. “Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction“ (Pope Benedict XVI, Encyclical Deus Caritas Est). Let us live our Christianity in this way and bring others to do the same.

3. Save! If we have had the experience of losing a document on our computer or having our hard drive crash, we know how painful it is to contemplate the missed opportunity to have clicked the “save” icon or backed up our documents. Imagine the lament when it is the eternity of a soul that is at stake. If we only understood the value of one soul! Christ spoke of being saved in the context of believing. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find any faith on the earth? Let us awaken others to believe in Christ’s love.

Dialogue with Christ: Lord Jesus, thank you for your final words to us through the apostles. Through them you offer us the opportunity to experience rich meaning in our lives. There is no greater and more meaningful life than that of a Christian apostle spending his time so that others may spend their eternity in your presence. Please give me the grace to understand the value of a soul!

Resolution: I will put a book, flyer, electronic article or website in the hands of someone to help them along the way to living their Christian life or discovering the Christian life for the first time.
