The United Methodist General Conference had eliminated Atlanta before choosing Richmond for its 2012 General Conference.
Now, it has eliminated Richmond as host for its 1,000 delegates and 4,000 other attendees, for the same reason: the names of the Braves' baseball teams.
The denomination's Commission on the General Conference is moving the convention to Tampa because of its policy, begun in 2004, of not meeting in cities home to professional sports teams with American Indian names.

It is pleasant to see that they do not have any more important business to attend to - must be a blissfully stress-less life. I am deeply impressed and even more deeply envious. What a baboonery!

This was one of those rules that got passed in the wee hours of the last GC because all the time had been used up fussing about homosexuality.
That's how the game works. Tie things up so nothing substantive can be accomplished, and then push gobbledy-gook through at the end.

the Braves are named after an Osage pitcher...maybe they should call them the Okie Osages instead of the Braves...

They've obviously seen the "R" Braves play. They could hardly be called professional.

Good one.
I wonder if they used the demeaning term American Indians in their resolution? If so, their attempt to be considerate was inherently inconsiderate.
After all, the Cleveland Indians is one of the teams they're pretending to boycot.

I wonder if they used the demeaning term American Indians in their resolution? Well, actually, in Virginia the term "American Indian" is the preferred term used by the tribes.

If the General Converence was consistent, they would defrock every Methodist church in Richmond and Atlanta. How dare those people have a Methodist Church in a town with a baseball team that has an Indian mascot?
Holy cow! Does the bible or Jesus ever come up in any of these General Conference meetings? Or do they just while away the day discussing poliltical correctness?
To: P-Marlowe
See #8.
We were so busy fighting homosexuality legislation that that was the only thing for about 90% of the time there.
We need a resolution that prevents bulk passage of omnibus legislation. Every single item must be presented individually or tabled.

There needs to be some "method" of keeping the wolves out of the kitchen.
The first priority of business should be in determining how better to reach people for Christ. The last order of business should be in how better to make sinners feel good about their sins.
But then I'm not a Methodist and with stuff like this coming out of their General Conference it isn't likely that I ever will become a Methodist.
Has anyone exhumed Wesley's body to see if he has turned over in his grave?
