It's a shame that the tallest building in cities these days is rarely if ever the church.

One problem, and it is not just a Catholic one, is that the exterior architecture of too many churches do not indicate their purpose. I will say that Catholic church construction in the area where I live, the northern suburbs of Dallas, has vastly improved over the last five years in that respect, with a new attention to Romanesque architecture, a style that clearly says, this is a church.

Another problem is poorly conceived exterior decoration that becomes a joke. A couple of examples are the "Touchdown Jesus" outside the chapel on the campus of Notre Dame University and the "Surfer Jesus" statue in front of a Methodist church in Corpus Christi, Texas.
