06 February 2006, 11:35 Russian Orthodox youth expedition will ascend the highest mountain in North America
Moscow, February 6, Interfax - Boys from a childrens home in Kostroma region led by their father-confessor are planning to ascend the highest peak of Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America located in Alaska and celebrate divine liturgy there on Pentecost which the Orthodox will celebrate on June 11 this year.
Archpriest Andrey Voronin, father confessor of the childrens home in the town of Nerekhta, Kostroma region, told Interfax that they were planning the expedition for the period from May 20 to June 20. Its main goal is to set up a tent church on McKinley peak, 6195 m, and celebrate festive divine service there.
Seven boys, age 13-16, and eight adults will take part in the expedition. According to Rev. Andrey, all boys from the childrens home are physically fit and took part in several extreme expeditions.
The McKinley Project- the first Russian-American project of the kind - will be realized with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia and Metropolitan Herman of All America and Canada.
Rev. Andrey has organized Orthodox childrens expeditions to various mountain peaks more than once. Among the recent achievements of his boys is their ascent of the Elbrus.
According to him, the Childrens extreme project is aimed at attracting public attention to the problem of orphans.
