Laying the Groundwork?
A call came in this morning from one of our trusted sources, known for his proficiency in predicting and reporting all things SSPX. (This guy has never broken communion, however.)
The line was this: that on Wednesday, all the Lefevbrist groups will be meeting somewhere in France. As the source said in predicting its likely outcome: "The excommunications will be annuled, mass sanations of everything [i.e. the illicit rites conducted through the years], and the indult will be granted in privatu -- that is, for private celebrations."
Minutes ago, an e.mail arrived from Rome reporting something in that ballpark... And Novus Ordo Watch is running an alert which states that "Source tells Novus Ordo Watch that there will be a meeting of all religious societies that have ties with the SSPX, in Flavigny, France, on February 1. Secondly, the SSPX Higher Council will meet on February 7-8; all four bishops will be present."
Could it be -- the Devil really won't need his refrigerator anymore?
SVILUPPO (8.35pm): Further information has arrived on the meeting....
Apparently, it has been called at the behest of Mons. Bernard Fellay, the SSPX Superior General, and the First Assistant General, Fr Franz Schmidberger. I'm told that a split exists among the Society's four bishops, with Richard Williamson said to be "obstinate," possibly prepared to lead those of the group who decide not to return. No word is given as to the stance of the other two bishops ordained by Lefevbre in defiance of the Holy See and John Paul II in 1988: Tissier de Mallerais and Alfonso de Galarreta.
My sentiments exactly.
Call me skeptical. The SSPXers are going to want to be able to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass anywhere in the world without the indult - private or public.
I agree, and I believe Pope Benedict XVI will state that the 1962 Missal has never been abolished or banned, and all priests anywhere may say the TLM.
That said, many Bishops (just as now) won't allow the TLMs in their parish churches and there will be difficulties because of it. But at least a papal directive would move access along and provide a necessary stipulation to bring about a regularization of the SSPX. The SSPX also needs assurances that they won't be treated like the FSSP and what occurred with Protocol 1411. A way around that is some type of organizational structure with a reporting relationship to Rome.
praying-it's-true bumpus ad summum
Didn't Mario Derksen, sede, have something to do with establishing N.O. Watch?
*Well, isnt that precious. Norvus Ordo Watch posts this BS and then triesw to distance itself from it
This sounds like an ultra-trad pipe dream and it's not likely to happen.
Sts. Pius V and X, pray for us!
Bump!
Seems it may be easier to reconcile on paper than in the heart
*sigh*
Schismatic tendencies go both ways.
Reconciliation would be nice. The Catholic Church should always be ready with open arms for prodigal Traditionalists.
These groups want to celebrate the Mass the way its been celebrated for a millenium. The sixties came along and the Church had no room for these Catholics. They celebrate the same Mass as my father grew up with. Please what makes them "ultra-Trad"?
Interesting discussion going on at Amy Wellborn's blog ...
SSPX teaches the normative mass is evil
SSPX has spread hatred and enmity about the Magisterium, routinely attacked the Pope, the Mass, and the Council
Other than that they are total, abject, failures. Their only "successful" act has been to create a schism.
I am, frequently, told he is a latter day St. Athanasius. That being true, the sspx can't even maintain the Traditon of its "Saintly" founder yet it claims to be the only outfit maintaining Christian Tradition. If that is true, then the SSPX founder was a charlatan, a liar, easily duped, or an insane man when he signed the Documents.
What is the SSPX's position about that?
*Just because you are Orthodox now...
I hope that the whole thing goes through
* is no reason to wish us ill
I would imagine the American bishops will be highly ticked at having to put up with these conservative Catholics in their diocese.
*I can't imagine any Bishop wanting these folks back. They have NO intention of ending their war for "Tradition" and against the Magisterium. The SSPX is a protestant outfit wearing Fiddlebacks and swinging a censer
Not too long ago, Cardinal Ratzinger publicly trashed one of their texts on the Mass. In essence, he said, "They're idiots."
