Interestingly enough, Rick Warren's remedy for "stuck in the past" goes beyond just wanting to modernize worship service.

If that isn't enough to drive tradtionalists away, he wants to water down doctrine so that church is sort of like a smorgasbord where everyone can get what he/she wants but need not taste of the things that make him/her uncomfortable. After all, that keeps them coming back, right? Can you say A-P-O-S-T-A-S-Y?

If a minister refuses to address sin, repentance and barely mentions redemption, what is his purpose? (no pun intended)

Can you say A-P-O-S-T-A-S-Y?

Now you've taken it way too far.

I do not doubt Mr. Warren's committment to Christ. I have reason to question his vision, and as far as his statements as quoted in this article, I have reason to doubt his intelligence. But I think it is really awful when Christians accuse Mr. Warren of such things as A-P-O-S-T-A-C-Y.

When you publicly accuse a brother of that you'd better pray to God that you are right.

While I feel pretty uspet about Warren's statements in regard to fundamentalists and his global United Nations vision for the Church, I will not stoop so low as to call him an apostate. Further, I am not going to sit idly by while Mr. Warren's name is unfairly and viciously dragged through the mud. Criticize him all you want, but if you accuse him of apostacy, you are making a very grave accusation. I don't think you have the ammunition to back it up. Further, I suspect that your own theology is not exactly perfect either. So back off.

I don't think anyone has accused Warren of that. I think people have rightly noted that he teaches a false divisive doctrine and that he has moved away from the faith once delivered to the saints. In other words, he has apostazied, if that's how you spell it.

Chistians MUST point out these errors before the pollute the whole body of Christ.

Just because he looks like a big friendly teddy bear doesn't mean that he is.

We have already seen how he so easily dismisses Christians and compares them to Muslim terrorist.

I mean, it's not like the guy is orthodox in any way any longer.

That means he is NOT one of the "good guys but a wolf in sheeps clothing.

That is a very grave accusation. You'd better pray to God that you are correct when you make it.

I suspect that Mr. Warren has a lot of faults, but being a wolf in sheep's clothing does not appear to be one of them. As far as his criticism of fundamentalists, I think his statements are stupid. But I hear the same statements from Evangelicals and Catholics and everyone else here who does not want to be associated with guys like Jerry Falwell. If everyone who criticized Fundamentalists on this board were wolves in sheep's clothing, then I dare say that only about 5% of the posters here at the free republic religion forum could be considered saved.

I suspect that many of Warren's harshest critics on this board have also been just as critical of Fundamentalists as Warren. Hypocrisy knows no boundaries.

It's not an accusation. It's a report of his activities and how he has strayed from a Biblical faith and world view.

You better pray that God forgives YOU for not being willing to do the same.

Do you agree with the following?

Inerrancy of the Scriptures
The virgin birth and the deity of Jesus
The doctrine of substitutionary atonement through God's grace and human faith
The bodily resurrection of Jesus
The authenticity of Christ's miracles (or, alternatively, his premillenial second coming)

Here is the point:
If you believe the following, Rick Warren says you are just as bad as a Muslim fundamentalist, and that you are narrow and legalist.

Inerrancy of the Scriptures
The virgin birth and the deity of Jesus
The doctrine of substitutionary atonement through God's grace and human faith
The bodily resurrection of Jesus
The authenticity of Christ's miracles (or, alternatively, his premillenial second coming)

He objects to that, he claims it's believed out of fear, and that those who believe those five fundamentals are dangerous and the enemy.

I don't think anyone has accused Warren of that.

You just did

And you apparently accused me of the same by not agreeing with you.

This conversation is over.

It's up to him to be clear about what he means if he says something like this.

I'm glad you posted this. Kind of explains why we were no longer really welcome at my husband's church after the new Purpose-Driven Preacher arrived.

He did drive us out. Came to visit us at our home and talked to us for nearly two hours, drawing things out of us. Then used the things we had confided in him against us. Now I see it was all just to get us to leave. He didn't want our type there. He wanted ameners and nothing-matterers in the pews.

We've been looking but I am beginning to despair now of ever finding a place to worship, that hasn't been contaminated with bad theology and bad music. It's not fair. I was baptised less than 4 years ago, and suddenly, just when I need it most, there's not a church around that I can stand to sit in for very long. Makes me want to stop looking and stop trying.

I might as well. Going to church breaks my heart now, whereas opening the Bible does not. Maybe I should just stick to the Book.

I don't really know you that well, but I suspect you're a believer in Jesus Christ. The gospel is simply spelled out by the Apostle Paul at the beginning of 1 Co 15 -- "Christ died for our sins according to the scripture...dead...buried....resurrected...seen by witnesses."

Do you believe the gospel?

Alright, you are both Calvinists tonight. I'll be the designated "Seeker Sensitive" guy and defend Rick, but just for tonight.

I just saw the "fundamentalism....enemies" quote.

Too bad.

Dumb thing to say. Makes it hard for those of us who've been defending him to get that done.

He might be talking about any number of things: worship style, theology....whatever. No matter what it is it's pretty self-congratulatory and it's pretty condemning of real Christians who do things a bit differently.

There's only one test, by their fruits shall ye know them. A good shepherd does not tear at the flock and divide them, only a bad shepherd does that.

It's not an accusation. It's a statement of fact regarding the comparison of Warren's false teachings with the true teachings of Scripture.

True. But, a lot of posters can't seem to see the difference between making a stupid statement and falling from grace.

From what I recall Peter was the king of stupid statements. Are any of us better than him?
