VILE “SOUTH PARK” EPISODE PULLED (Catholic League Pres. responds)
Catholic League ^ | December 30, 2005 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 12/30/2005 11:40:04 AM PST by NYer

“Several news stories today are reporting on the decision by Comedy Central to pull a scheduled rerun of the ‘Bloody Mary’ episode that was  shown on ‘South Park’ on December 7-10.  The decision reflects what I asked for in our news release of December 8.  Therefore, I commend Comedy Central for finally making the right decision.  That it aired in the first place, however, does not speak well for the bigots responsible for creating it.

“In our December 8 news release, I also said, ‘Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself.’  The episode in question featured a statue of the Virgin Mary spraying blood from her vagina.  It was one of the most vile TV shows ever to appear, and that is why I asked Joseph Califano, a practicing Catholic and member of Viacom’s board of directors (Viacom is the parent company of Comedy Central) to issue a public condemnation of the ‘Bloody Mary’ episode; I also asked that he do whatever he could to pull any scheduled reruns of the episode.

“On December 9, the day Califano received our request, he released a statement condemning the episode.  He also said that any further decisions would have to be made by Tom Freston, president and chief executive of the New Viacom.  For the past few weeks, we have been in touch with Freston’s office awaiting his decision.  Yesterday, we received a phone call from Tony Fox, executive vice president for corporate communications at Comedy Central, informing us that there were no plans to rerun ‘Bloody Mary.’

“Already, we are being deluged with hate mail that is as obscene as it is viciously anti-Catholic.  All because we exercised our First Amendment right to request that Comedy Central not offend Catholics again!  But we’re used to such things and will not be deterred.”

Turn the Channel and get progressively worse stuff.

Don't need to turn the channel since I don't watch any of the 'stuff' that is being fed to the laugh less in search of a laugh. However, I applaud the someone who has taken a stand against the (as you imply) 'less than worse stuff'.

Thanks, your post cemented my idea of religious extremist zealots.

You would look so nice in a burqha.

You are all for free speech, just so long as its free speech you agree with.

I keep thinking how much these people are reminding me of Jack Chick, what with their constant reference to our laughter over this episode gratifying Satans, demons, and how he looks forward to our Judgment. All someone needs is to draw a tract about how South Park is the tool of the devil, and we'll be in the game.

Seriously, I always thought that people in my religion were above this. I guess not.

Thanks, your post cemented my idea of living in 'fear' - better allow this, or I won't have that. You worry about looking nice in a burqha - that's your fear NOT mine.

You are all for free speech, just so long as its free speech you agree with - and the only way you see keeping free speech is live in FEAR of it being taken away. FEAR is weakness. You have bowed to fear.

Yes, I am a bad Catholic. :(

What's funny is the episode didn't even air on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It was on Dec 8, and the episode aired Dec 7. People are reaally stretching for this one.

No, I can watch the show anytime I want, its all over the internet. In fact, because of all the zealotry, more people have watched the show than would have before. So, actually, raising all this furor has promoted SP more, and you are doing the opposite of what you all are setting out to do.

You are the one that fears that their entire belief structure is so weak that a cartoon will ruin it. You are afraid that people can speak freely and say things you disagree with. If you want to live in that world, go ahead. I'm not afraid of people criticizing my religion.

Btw, your random posting of art to reinforce your point is only making you look more like a religious nutjob.

Yes, and unlike snippy people like you, I don't wear it on my shoulder and flaunt it all about.

Born and raised Catholic, Irish/German/Arcadian family. Did Catholic school K-12, go to mass, all that. And yeah, I have problems with the church, in my parish we had 2 pedophiles who were sent to jail, we had a bishop who was a pedophile, another bishop who sheltered pedophiles, and knowingly put them in churches in charge of youth services. We have a monsignor who is up for charges of sexual assault, and to top it off, our last bishop was found guilty in the hit and run death of a man and was kicked out.

We got a new bishop, he is pretty good, and he is trying to rebuild the diocese, its a tough job and I wish him well. He has lots more tough things to do than to bitch and moan about a cartoon though.

Snippy? I was just curious. I'm sorry you thought I was snippy. Bad clergy do not ruin a religion, as hard as they try, and I'm convinced that many do so on purpose.

I was just reflecting that if, in polite society, one were to bring up in conversation, oh say, the Armenian holocaust, in which Christians were slaughtered for their money and lands, then that would be considered very bad form. If one even dares question the PC version of the Jewish Holocaust of WW2, one may find one's butt in jail. Yet, our Christian God is reviled endlessly by a controlled media, and if we even question it, then we are "religious zealots". It's a funny funny world, isn't it?

South Park makes fun of the Holocaust all of the time. Heck, they had an episode where AIDS was funny.

That particular argument isn't going to work in this situation, sorry.

No, they haven't ruined it yet, and I am hopeful that our new bishop cleans house and gets rid of the rest of them. He has lots more important things to do, as do all Catholics than to get on the Bill Donahue publicity bandwagon.

I haven't seen So. Park.

In what way does So. Park make fun of the Holocaust?

What are 'we all' setting out to do. Stop TV viewers from watching? NO! Where did you dig that up from. You just don't get it. When you have no truth, how could you get it?

Afraid? Remember you are living in fear with your burqha mentality. NOT I. Nice try at twisting it but my war has been won, no need to fear. But in the interim, I will stand against any evil thing. Cartoons are not fearful. They are used to keep you entertained, the ones 'in need of a few laughs' laughing. It certainly keeps you/them occupied with 'laughter' instead of thinking. And to me, that is laughable.
