Tree Lightings and New Public Service Announcements in 2005 Lineup
More than 600 Catholic school pupils decorated Christmas trees at the Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven this week. The theme for their decorations was the Nativity. The Knights of Columbus kicked off the Christmas season this week as councils throughout the Order -- including the Supreme Council in New Haven -- took part in the "Light up for Christ" program.
Light up for Christ is one of two annual Christmas campaigns organized by the Knights of Columbus to increase awareness of the true meaning of Christmas. Councils are encouraged to hold a Christmas tree or Nativity scene lighting ceremony on the first Tuesday of December to commemorate Christ's birth.
In addition, the Knights provide public service announcements to radio and television stations nationwide urging people to Keep Christ in Christmas.
This year, new radio spots encouraging people to "Keep Christ in Christmas" by helping the less fortunate have been produced in English and for the first time in Spanish. A television PSA -- which first ran last year -- is being sent to TV networks and hundreds of local broadcast stations and cable television systems. The Knights have been producing "Keep Christ in Christmas" PSAs since the 1980s.
In recent years, the Knights of Columbus Christmas PSAs have consistently reached more than 20 million television viewers and as many as 27 million radio listeners each year.
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said, "In a modern society that is increasingly commercial and secular, it is all too easy to lose sigt of the true meaning of Christmas. We give gifts to each other because it is the day on which we celebrate the ultimate gift: the Christ child, the savior of mankind. Even those who do not share the Christian faith can and do appreciate the message of peace and hope that this Christian holiday holy day brings to the world. It is a message that the world needs now more than ever."
